Effect of multiscale PCA de-noising on EMG signal classification for diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders

Different approaches have been applied for quantitative analysis of EMG signals. This study introduces the effect of Multiscale Principal Component Analysis (MSPCA) denoising method in ElectroMyoGram (EMG) signal classification. The effect of the MSPCA denoising method discussed on EMG signal classification. In addition, effect of Multiple Single Classification (MUSIC) feature extraction method presented and compared for the classification of EMG signals. The results were accomplished on the basis of EMG signal data to classify into normal, ALS or myopathic. Furthermore, total accuracy of classifiers such as k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machines (SVMs) were discussed. Significant results were found by using MSPCA denoising method. The comparisons between the developed classifiers were based on a number of scalar performances such as sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, F-measure and area under ROC curve (AUC). The results show that MSPCA de-noising has considerably increased the accuracy as compared to EMG data without MSPCA de-noising.

Wavelet domain feature extraction scheme based on dominant motor unit action potential of EMG signal for neuromuscular disease classification

In this paper, two schemes for neuromuscular disease classification from electromyography (EMG) signals are proposed based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) features. In the first scheme, a few high energy DWT coefficients along with the maximum value are extracted in a frame by frame manner from the given EMG data. Instead of considering only such local information obtained from a single frame, we propose to utilize global statistics which is obtained based on information collected from some consecutive frames. In the second scheme, motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) are first extracted from the EMG data via template matching based decomposition technique. It is well known that not all MUAPs obtained via decomposition are capable of uniquely representing a class. Thus, a novel idea of selecting a dominant MUAP, based on energy criterion, is proposed and instead of all MUAPs, only the dominant MUAP is used for the classification. A feature extraction scheme based on some statistical properties of the DWT coefficients of dominant MUAPs is proposed. For the purpose of classification, the K-nearest neighborhood (KNN) classifier is employed. Extensive analysis is performed on clinical EMG database for the classification of neuromuscular diseases and it is found that the proposed methods provide a very satisfactory performance in terms of specificity, sensitivity, and overall classification accuracy.

Hybrid soft computing systems for electromyographic signals analysis: a review

Electromyographic (EMG) is a bio-signal collected on human skeletal muscle. Analysis of EMG signals has been widely used to detect human movement intent, control various human-machine interfaces, diagnose neuromuscular diseases, and model neuromusculoskeletal system. With the advances of artificial intelligence and soft computing, many sophisticated techniques have been proposed for such purpose. Hybrid soft computing system (HSCS), the integration of these different techniques, aims to further improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and accuracy of EMG analysis. This paper reviews and compares key combinations of neural network, support vector machine, fuzzy logic, evolutionary computing, and swarm intelligence for EMG analysis. Our suggestions on the possible future development of HSCS in EMG analysis are also given in terms of basic soft computing techniques, further combination of these techniques, and their other applications in EMG analysis.

Ensemble classification of colon biopsy images based on information rich hybrid features

In recent years, classification of colon biopsy images has become an active research area. Traditionally, colon cancer is diagnosed using microscopic analysis. However, the process is subjective and leads to considerable inter/intra observer variation. Therefore, reliable computer-aided colon cancer detection techniques are in high demand. In this paper, we propose a colon biopsy image classification system, called CBIC, which benefits from discriminatory capabilities of information rich hybrid feature spaces, and performance enhancement based on ensemble classification methodology. Normal and malignant colon biopsy images differ with each other in terms of the color distribution of different biological constituents. The colors of different constituents are sharp in normal images, whereas the colors diffuse with each other in malignant images. In order to exploit this variation, two feature types, namely color components based statistical moments (CCSM) and Haralick features have been proposed, which are color components based variants of their traditional counterparts. Moreover, in normal colon biopsy images, epithelial cells possess sharp and well-defined edges. Histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) based features have been employed to exploit this information. Different combinations of hybrid features have been constructed from HOG, CCSM, and Haralick features. The minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (mRMR) feature selection method has been employed to select meaningful features from individual and hybrid feature sets. Finally, an ensemble classifier based on majority voting has been proposed, which classifies colon biopsy images using the selected features. Linear, RBF, and sigmoid SVM have been employed as base classifiers. The proposed system has been tested on 174 colon biopsy images, and improved performance (=98.85%) has been observed compared to previously reported studies. Additionally, the use of mRMR method has been justified by comparing the performance of CBIC on original and reduced feature sets.
