Abstract
The solid-state structures and unequivocal stereochemistries of isomeric pyridine-based leuco-triarylmethane (LTAM) dyes 2,2'-(2-(pyridin-4 or 3-yl)propane-1,3-diylidene)bis(5-chloro-1,3,3-trimethylindoline) derivatives were established by X-ray crystallography. Surprisingly, the EE isomer was formed for the 4-pyridinyl compound, whereas the 3-pyridinyl compound formed ZE isomers. In addition, the latter have a so-called three-bladed propeller conformation, whereas the former possess a Y-shaped conformation. These pyridine-based LTAM compounds stack to form a dimer, adopting either an orthorhombic, with Pcmn space group, or monoclinic crystal system with P21/n space group in the crystal unit cell.

Abstract
Furfuryl cations are generated via a highly efficient bismuth-catalyzed reaction of furfuryl alcohols. This systematic study provides insight on the reactivity profile of furfuryl cations towards nucleophilic substitution reactions. Novel C-C, C-N, C-O and C-S bond forming reactions of furfuryl cations have been developed, thus providing access to a diverse array of building blocks for further manipulations.

Abstract
Although metal-catalyzed direct arylation reactions of non- or weakly acidic C-H bonds have recently received much attention, chemists have relied heavily on substrates with appropriately placed directing groups to steer reactivity. To date, examples of intermolecular arylation of unactivated C(sp(3))-H bonds in the absence of a directing group remain scarce. We report herein the first general, high-yielding, and scalable method for palladium-catalyzed C(sp(3))-H arylation of simple diarylmethane derivatives with aryl bromides at room temperature. This method facilitates access to a variety of sterically and electronically diverse hetero- and nonheteroaryl-containing triarylmethanes, a class of compounds with various applications and interesting biological activity. Key to the success of this approach is an in situ metalation of the substrate via C-H deprotonation under catalytic cross-coupling conditions, which is referred to as a deprotonative-cross-coupling process (DCCP). Base and catalyst identification were performed by high-throughput experimentation (HTE) and led to a unique base/catalyst combination [KN(SiMe(3))(2)/Pd-NiXantphos] that proved to efficiently promote the room-temperature DCCP of diarylmethanes. Additionally, the DCCP exhibits remarkable chemoselectivity in the presence of substrates that are known to undergo O-, N-, enolate-, and C(sp(2))-H arylation.

Abstract
Coupling with inversion: Chiral diarylmethanol derivatives undergo a stereospecific nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction with aryl Grignard reagents (see scheme). The reaction proceeds with inversion of configuration and high enantiospecificity. The method has been applied to the asymmetric synthesis of a triarylmethane-based anti-cancer compound.

Abstract
We have developed a novel triphenylmethane-based hexanuclear zinc complex that exhibits peculiar photochemical and photophysical properties. Upon UV irradiation, the compound turned from colorless to reddish purple, while the color of emission turned from blue to red. The color change was attributed to an oxidation of the ligand part. It was suggested that an intramolecular energy-transfer mechanism operates to give rise to the red emission. The UV treatment of a single crystal results in simultaneous emission of orthogonally polarized blue and red light. This color switching, namely linear dichroic emission was so distinct that one can recognize with by sight through optical microscope. The columnar arrangement of molecules in the crystal clearly accounts for the observed polarization of the emission.

Abstract
The FeCl(3) x 6H(2)O-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts arylation reactions of N-sulfonyl aldimines or sulfonamidesulfones with electron-rich arenes and heteroarenes, which lead to the formation of triarylmethanes and bis-heteroarylarylmethanes, are developed. The use of mild reaction conditions, low catalytic loading, high yield, and single step synthesis are the advantages of the present procedure.

Abstract
The first highly efficient double Friedel-Crafts reaction of N-tosyl imines with anisole, phenol, thioanisole and analogues has been developed to produce the corresponding symmetric diarylmethanes and triarylmethanes with high regioselectivity in the presence of a catalytic amount of Bi(2)(SO(4))(3)-TMSCl at room temperature.

Abstract
A series of [(aryl)arylsufanylmethyl]pyridines (AASMP) have been synthesized. These compounds inhibited hemozoin formation, formed complexes (K(D) = 12 to 20 muM) with free heme (ferriprotoporphyrin IX) at a pH close to the pH of the parasite food vacuole, and exhibited antimalarial activity in vitro. The inhibition of hemozoin formation may develop oxidative stress in Plasmodium falciparum due to the accumulation of free heme. Interestingly, AASMP developed oxidative stress in the parasite, as evident from the decreased level of glutathione and increased formation of lipid peroxide, H(2)O(2), and hydroxyl radical (.OH) in P. falciparum. AASMP also caused mitochondrial dysfunction by decreasing mitochondrial potential (DeltaPsim) in malaria parasite, as measured by both flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. Furthermore, the generation of .OH may be mainly responsible for the antimalarial effect of AASMP since .OH scavengers such as mannitol, as well as spin trap alpha-phenyl-n-tertbutylnitrone, significantly protected P. falciparum from AASMP-mediated growth inhibition. Cytotoxicity testing of the active compounds showed selective activity against malaria parasite with selectivity indices greater than 100. AASMP also exhibited profound antimalarial activity in vivo against chloroquine resistant P. yoelii. Thus, AASMP represents a novel class of antimalarial.
