Abstract
Hexamethoxy-calix[6]arene has been fully functionalized with p-phosphonic acid groups on the upper rim in 57% yield over three steps, and has been authenticated in the solid state by X-ray diffraction as either a nitrate salt or one of two calcium complexes. The latter differ by the ratio of calcium ions per calixarene, either 3:1 or 4:1. In both structures the coordination sphere of the calcium ions is made up of oxygen atoms from the phosphonic acid groups and from water of crystallization, as part of extended polymeric layers in the extended 3D packing. Hirshfeld surface analysis shows extensive O...H and O...Ca interactions for the phosphonic acid moieties in both calcium structures. MALDI-TOF MS of the hexaphosphonic acid shows nano-arrays consisting of up to a maximum of 28 calixarene units.

Abstract
A novel sugar-appended low-molecular-mass gelator, 4''-butoxy-4-hydroxy-p-terphenyl-beta-D-glucoside (BHTG), was synthesized. It formed thermally reversible gels in a variety of aqueous and organic solvents. Three-dimensional networks made up of helical ribbons were observed in the mixture of H(2)O/1,4-dioxane (40/60 v/v). The handedness of the ribbons depended on the rate of gel formation. Fast-cooling process led to right-handed ribbons, while slow-cooling process led to left-handed ones. A combinatory analyses of microscopic, spectroscopic, and diffraction techniques revealed that BHTG formed a twisted interdigitated bilayer structure with a d spacing of 3.1 nm in gels through a kinetically controlled nucleation-growth process. There were two kinds of molecular orientations of BHTG in the nuclei, clockwise and anticlockwise, which dictated the growth of ribbons. One was metastable and formed first during the cooling process of gel formation. It was able to gradually transform into the more stable latter one with further decreasing temperature. Fast-cooling process did not leave enough time for the nuclei to evolve from metastable to stable state and the ribbons grown from them exhibited right-handedness. However, the metastable nuclei transformed into the stable one when cooled slowly and directed the molecules of BHTG to grow into left-handed aggregates.

Abstract
In the title compound, C(14)H(10)O(6)S(2), the dihedral angle between the planes of the two phenyl-ene rings is 55.9 (1)°. Both hydr-oxy groups form intra-molecular hydrogen bonds; however, one of them also engages in inter-molecular hydrogen bonding. In the crystal, mol-ecules are connected into helical chains by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The crystal studied was an inversion twin with a domain ratio of 0.51 (13):0.49 (13).

Abstract
Possessing 2D netlike and 1D linear morphologies, two nano-supramolecular architectures A1 and A2 are constructed by tetracationic porphyrin (G1) and dicationic porphyrin (G2), respectively, upon complexation with the novel water-soluble bis(p-sulfonatocalix[5]arenes) bridged at the lower rim (H2). Corresponding to the molecular design, the aggregation morphologies are well manipulated by the inherent binding sites of the building blocks through host-guest interactions as well as charge interactions. In comparison to the simple p-sulfonatocalix[5]arene H1 which can only form particle-type complexes C1 and C2 with porphyrin guests, H2 provides excellent pre-organized structure to construct highly complex nano-supramolecular assemblies. The exhibited electron-transfer process of the supramolecular systems is further investigated by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, electrochemical measurements, and transient absorption spectroscopy. The results obtained show that calixarenes are also effective electron donors in PET besides acting as significant building blocks, which gives them many advantages in constructing well-ordered nanomaterials with the capability of electron and energy transport.

Abstract
Lower rim O-methyl, -n-butyl, and n-octadecyl calix[4]arenes bearing p-phosphonic acid groups on the upper rim have been prepared in high yield, compounds 12-14. Where possible the compounds have been characterized in the solid state using X-ray diffraction, or as the precursor phosphate esters or a cesium salt. The cone conformation ethyl phosphate ester for the octadecyl compound crystallizes in a bi-layer 39.1 A thick which approaches the 40 A of biological membranes. The 1,3-alternate cone conformation of the cesium salt of the O-methyl phosphonic acid has a metal ion coordinated to two methoxy groups, four O-P (two from neighboring calixarenes), and two eta(3)-C(3) moieties from two 1,3-disposed aromatic rings. MALDI-TOF spectra of compounds 12-14 show successive peaks corresponding to 15, 33 and 16 calixarene units, which is consistent with the intra-molecular H-bonding capabilities of the di-protic phosphonic acid groups where the calixarenes are arranged into layers, including bilayers.

Abstract
Several lower-rim perfluoroalkylated (fluorous) calix[4]arenes have been synthesized by O-alkylation of the parent calix[4]arene. The compounds are formed in the cone conformation. They are soluble in several fluorous solvents and show promise for use in sensing, selective extractions and other applications.

Abstract
Self-organization during the self-assembly of a series of functionalized bispyridyl organic donors with complementary di-Pt(II) acceptors into supramolecular rhomboids and rectangles is explored. The connectivity and location of functional groups on the organic donors ensures that they do not interfere sterically or electronically with their respective binding sites. Carefully controlled reaction conditions are employed so that the only means of self-organization during self-assembly is through "second-order" effects arising from the distal functional groups themselves. With the selection of functionalized systems studied, the extent of second-order self-organization varies from essentially zero to quite pronounced.
