Abstract
2-Mono- and 2,9-di-substituted 1,10-phenanthrolines with 4-pyridine units attached either via 1,4-phenylene- or 4-ethynyl-phenyl spacers, have been synthesised. The strategy is based on the introduction of 4-trimethylsilylphenyl group(s) at the phenanthroline core with the subsequent ipso-substitution of TMS groups by bromine or iodine and successive Suzuki or Sonogashira reactions with 4-pyridineboronic acid or 4-ethynylpyridine, respectively.

Abstract
Three analogues of 1a,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) (calcitriol), featuring a trans-fused decalin C,D-core with local S(2)-symmetry, and possessing identical side-chain and seco-B,A-ring structures, have been synthesized starting from readily available (4aR,8aS)-octahydronaphthalene-1,5-dione (7). The very short sequences involve the simultaneous introduction of the side-chain and seco-B,A-ring fragments via Suzuki and Sonogashira coupling reactions. The analogues are devoid of relevant biological activity.

Abstract
Tetralactam macrocycles can be functionalized by a variety of cross-coupling reactions. A modular "toolbox" strategy is presented that allows 1) several tetralactam macrocycles to be covalently connected with each other or with a central spacer, 2) the macrocycles to be substituted with or connected to different chromophores, and 3) metal-coordination sites to be attached to the macrocycles. With this approach a series of different oligo-macrocyclic hosts was obtained with great structural diversity and enormous potential for further functionalization. Rotaxanes made on the basis of these macrocycles have been synthesized to demonstrate their utility in building more complex supramolecular architectures.

Abstract
AKT inhibitors containing an imidazopyridine aminofurazan scaffold have been optimized. We have previously disclosed identification of the AKT inhibitor GSK690693, which has been evaluated in clinical trials in cancer patients. Herein we describe recent efforts focusing on investigating a distinct region of this scaffold that have afforded compounds (30 and 32) with comparable activity profiles to that of GSK690693.

Abstract
Macrocyclic oxocarbenium ions can be formed from macrolactones that contain benzylic or allylic ether groups through oxidative carbon-hydrogen-bond activation mediated by 2,3-dichloro-4,5-dicyanoquinone (DDQ). The applicability of this efficient reaction to complex-molecule synthesis was demonstrated by its use in a brief formal synthesis of neopeltolide (see retrosynthetic scheme) to form the tetrahydropyrone ring.

Abstract
Metal nanoparticles have attracted much attention over the last decade owing to their unique properties as compared to their bulk metal equivalents, including a large surface-to-volume ratio and tunable shapes. To control the properties of nanoparticles with particular respect to shape, size and dispersity is imperative, as these will determine the activity in the desired application. Supported metal nanoparticles are widely employed in catalysis. Recent advances in controlling the shape and size of nanoparticles have opened the possibility to optimise the particle geometry for enhanced catalytic activity, providing the optimum size and surface properties for specific applications. This Review describes the state of the art with respect to the preparation and use of supported metal nanoparticles in catalysis. The main groups of such nanoparticles (noble and transition metal nanoparticles) are highlighted and future prospects are discussed.
