Abstract
Palladium catalysts have been studied for the Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling of aryl and heteroaryl bromides with terminal alkynes. Among the different biarylphosphines tested, 2-(di-tert-butylphosphino)-N-phenylindole (cataCXium Plntb) allows the efficient coupling of both activated and deactivated (hetero)aryl bromides in the presence of sodium tetrachloropalladate in tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) at 80 degrees C. The catalyst system gives high turnover numbers (up to 14 100) and shows a broad tolerance towards functional groups such as OH and NH2, as well as heterocycles.

Abstract
The title mol-ecule, C(24)H(20)N(2)O(4)S(2), has crystallographic inversion symmetry with a triple-bond distance of 1.206 (2) Å. The alkyne is not quite linear, with a C-C C angle of 175.78 (16)°. The planar pyrrole rings are parallel but offset from coplanarity by 0.318 (1) Å. The conformation of the sulfonyl group with respect to the pyrrole ring is such that an O atom is nearly eclipsed with this ring, having an O-S-N-C torsion angle of 3.48 (11)°. C-H⋯O inter-actions [C⋯O 3.278 (2) Å, 136° about H] between pyrrole H and sulfonyl O atoms lead to the formation of ladder-like chains.

The title mol-ecule, C(30)H(28)N(2)O(4), has crystallographic twofold rotation symmetry, with the pyrrole planes forming a dihedral angle of 40.49 (4)°. The pyrrole N-H donor and adjacent ester carbonyl acceptor form R(2) (2)(10) hydrogen-bonded rings about inversion centers, leading to chains of hydrogen-bonded mol-ecules along [001].

Abstract
A number of wide- and narrow-rimmed functionalized alkynylcalix[4]arenes have been synthesized by Sonogashira coupling. With respect to their optical properties, these donor-acceptor systems are treated as ensembles of covalently linked, electronically independent tolane subchromophores. Linear UV/visible and fluorescence spectroscopic investigations revealed that the charge-transfer character of the electronic transitions in calixarenes, and also the second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties depend on the electron-withdrawing nature of the terminal ethynylphenyl substituent (NO(2), CF(3), H). The nitro derivatives display high values of the quadratic hyperpolarizability beta. Not only do the (nonlinear) optical properties of the target compounds depend on the number and relative disposition of the subchromophores, but also on the geometry of the calixarenes. In particular, the opening angle of the calixarene cavity can be determined by the substitution pattern of the calixarene scaffold (wide- versus narrow-rim substitution) and the number of the acetylene functions introduced. Both the NLO properties and the conformational issues are conveniently assessed by using hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) in solution, and supported by X-ray crystallography in the solid state.

Abstract
A convenient, one-pot procedure for the synthesis of 1-benzoyl-2(S)-substituted-5-iodo-2,3-dihydro-4(H)-pyrimidin-4-ones by tandem decarboxylation/beta-iodination of the corresponding 6-carboxy-perhydropyrimidin-4-ones was developed. In addition, several 1-benzoyl-2(S)-substituted-5-bromo-2,3-dihydro-4(H)-pyrimidin-4-ones were readily prepared by bromination of 1-benzoyl-2(S)-substituted-2,3-dihydro-4(H)-pyrimidin-4-ones. Subsequently, Sonogashira coupling of the halogenated heterocyclic enones with various terminal alkynes produced 1-benzoyl-2(S)-isopropyl-5-alkynyl-2,3-dihydro-4(H)-pyrimidin-4-ones in good yields. Hydrogenation of the unsaturated C-C moieties in the Sonogashira products followed by acid hydrolysis afforded highly enantioenriched alpha-substituted beta-amino acids.
