Abstract
Owing to specific formation of five-membered or six-membered cyclic esters between boric acid groups and cis-diol molecules, boric acid bearing fluorescent materials can not only selectively capture but also specifically identify cis-diol substances. In this work, a novel covalent organic framework containing boric acid groups (COF-BA) was prepared through post-modification via the aza-Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction. COF-BA with good stability, a permanent pore structure, a high specific surface area (606 m2 g-1) and a uniform pore size (2.59 nm) exhibited unique selectivity toward the cis-diol guest molecule 1,2-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione (1,2-Doa) with a high adsorption capacity of 177.95 mg g-1. However, as for the isomers of 1,2-Doa (1,4-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione and 2,6-dihydroxyanthracene-9,10-dione), the corresponding uptake capacities are distinctively decreased to 40.86 mg g-1 and 3.05 mg g-1, respectively. It is worth noting that the COF-BA can be recovered and recycled. Moreover, because the formation of the quinoline enhanced the conjugation effect of the COF skeleton, it was unexpectedly found that COF-BA possessed an intrinsic fluorescence property and could be used as an optical sensor for 1,2-Doa.

Abstract
A novel pH-sensitive colorimetric film was prepared based on immobilizing red barberry anthocyanins (RBAs) within composite chitin nanofiber (CNF) and methylcellulose (MC) matrices. The incorporation of CNFs and RBAs improved their mechanical properties, moisture resistance, and UV-vis screening properties. Moreover, the RBAs could be used as colorimetric indicators to detect food spoilage because they are sensitive to changes in pH and ammonia gas production. The RBA-halochromic indicator changed from reddish/crimson → pink → yellow with increasing pH, and from pink → yellow with increasing ammonia vapor concentration. Furthermore, the smart films possessed good antioxidant and antimicrobial activity owing to the presence of the RBAs and CNFs. Finally, the validity of the indicator to monitor the freshness/spoilage of a model food (fish) was demonstrated. Overall, this study shows that active/smart films can be assembled from food grade ingredients that can protect and monitor the freshness of products, like meat and fish.

Abstract
Pea hull is a renewable, readily available and abundant agricultural waste whose high-value utilization deserves more attentions. This work aimed at the isolation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from pea hull and evaluation its reinforcement capability for carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) film. The obtained CNC displayed needle-like shapes with length of 81-286 nm, diameter of 8-21 nm, aspect ratio of 16 and crystallinity index of 0.77. The effects of CNC content on the morphologies, optical, mechanical, water vapor barrier and thermal properties of CMC/CNC films were investigated. SEM images showed that the CNC was evenly distributed in the CMC matrix to form homogenous films when the content of CNC was ≤5 wt%. The CMC/CNC composite films showed improved UV barrier, mechanical strength, water vapor barrier and thermal stability. Compared with pure CMC film, an increase of 50.8% in tensile strength and a decrease of 53.4% in water vapor permeability were observed for 5 wt% CNC-reinforced composite film. Furthermore, 5 wt% CNC-reinforced composite film was used for red chilies packaging, which is very effective at reducing weight loss and maintaining vitamin C compared with uncoated red chilies. These results indicated that the CMC/CNC composite film may have promising application potential as edible food packaging material.

Abstract
A new pH-responsive color indicator film was prepared by blending barberry anthocyanin (BA) with methylcellulose (MC)/chitosan nanofiber (ChNF) composite film. The addition of ChNF and BA increased the mechanical and water barrier properties but reduced the UV-vis light transmittance of the composite film. Anthocyanin showed proper compatibility with the composite film. The color indicator film showed an apparent color change in response to pH changes and ammonia gas, being suitable for indicating the change in food pH, the formation of volatile nitrogen compounds, and food decay. The color indicator film changed clearly from reddish-pink to pale peach and finally to yellow when exposed to different pH buffers. However, in response to ammonia vapor, the color changed from pink to pale green and yellow. Besides, the color indicator film exhibited remarkable antioxidant activity. Therefore, the pH-sensing color indicator film can be used as a smart indicator for real-time freshness monitoring of meat and seafood products.

Abstract
Intelligent food packaging refers to packages with the ability to sense foodstuff changes and to inform customers of the packaging content variations. They are often accompanied by smart detecting devices. Providing a suitable platform to include these devices into packaging polymers has always been discussing. Electrospun nanofibers produced through the electrospinning have been recently utilized as an outstanding and novel platforms for this purpose. Thus, the main aim of this study is to investigate recent trends in producing intelligent food packaging using electrospinning technique. In this regard, this paper was categorized into two chief sections, including (a) the principal of electrospinning technique to fabricate fine nanofibers and the parameters affecting the quality of electrospun fibers, and (b) the role of nanofibers as a platform to cover pH indicators in intelligent food packaging.

Abstract
Materials based on natural high molecular compounds are particularly interesting for biomedical applications. It is known that the cross-linking agent used for preparation of biomacromolecule-based materials is as important as used biopolymer. Therefore, natural cross-linkers containing reactive carbonyl groups are of great interest especially for modifying properties of natural polysaccharides. One of the most popular cross-linking agents is glutaraldehyde. Nevertheless, the unreacted particles can be released from the cross-linked material and cause cytotoxic effects. This can be eliminated when using a cross-linker based e.g., on polysaccharides. This article describes quick and efficient synthesis of dialdehyde chitosan (DACS) and its application for the preparation of chitosan films. Materials obtained with different amount of DACS were fully characterized in terms of structure and surface morphology. Thermal and mechanical properties as well as hydrophilic character were also examined. The results obtained were compared with the materials obtained by cross-linking chitosan with low molecular weight glutaraldehyde and high molecular weight cross-linking agent based on polysaccharide-dialdehyde starch. Toxicity of all obtained materials was tested using the Microtox® test. It has been shown that due to better mechanical, thermal and surface properties as well as lower toxicity, dialdehyde chitosan is a very promising crosslinking agent.
