Abstract
The effect of confinement by crystals on the α relaxation, observed by dielectric broadband spectroscopy, in isotropic as well as in oriented semicrystalline poly(vinilydene fluoride), is analyzed on the basis of a new thermodynamic model. In both samples, it has been found that the average free-energy barrier, ΔF, for conformational rearrangements is of the same order of the dispersion barrier heights, δ(ΔF), around ΔF, i.e., the increase in the barrier height in conformational rearrangement is accompanied by an increase in the heterogeneity of constraining conditions. At a given temperature T, the readjustment free energy is larger in the oriented sample. This fact might be ascribed to either an enhanced effectiveness of confinement in the amorphous region due to the decrease of the amorphous layer thickness in the stacks, or to a change of the mean chain orientation or both. In addition, it is worth noting that in oriented poly(vinilydene fluoride) the regions of cooperative rearrangement are significantly larger. Moreover, independent of orientation, the size of these readjusting regions increase upon decreasing T. This feature, which underlies the Adam-Gibbs approach for liquids, is pointed out for the first time from direct data analysis in the case of confinement enhanced cooperativity. In addition to the above analysis, the samples have been characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, wide angle x-ray scattering, and small angle x-ray scattering.

Abstract
We carried out time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and ultrasmall-angle neutron scattering (USANS) studies of dynamically polarized high-density polyethylene (HDPE) doped with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO) persistent free radicals. We observed a remarkable enhancement of the scattering intensity shortly after a switching of microwave frequency from positive (negative) to negative (positive) dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP). The enhancement was found to be due to spatially heterogeneous proton-spin polarization generated as a result of heterogeneously distributed TEMPO in the HDPE sample. The spatial fluctuation of the polarization ranged up to the length-scale of > or = 100 nm. This result strongly suggests that the TEMPO free radicals are localized more in nonfibrils but less in fibrils of HDPE. In this way, we propose that the time-resolved DNP-SANS and DNP-USANS be general techniques to determine mesoscale spatial distribution of electron spins in dielectric materials.

Abstract
The reversible transitions of the lamellae of a crystalline-crystalline diblock copolymer from the melt to crystallites were studied using simultaneous small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) measurements with synchrotron radiation. A symmetric poly(ethylene oxide)-poly( varepsilon -caprolactone) diblock copolymer was chosen for this study. We showed in the course of the block copolymer crystallisation that the time-resolved integrated intensity I (int) was proportional to the product of the volume fractions of the PEO and PCL phases and the scattering contrast due to the electron density difference. These results demonstrated that simultaneous SAXS/WAXS measurements could be used to monitor the crystallisation process in two domains of different sizes at the same time.

Abstract
Samples made from linear polyethylene were drawn at room temperature and subsequently annealed at high temperatures below the melting point. The structural changes of the crystalline lamellae and lamellar superstructures as well as the single chain radius of gyration were studied by means of combined small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). After drawing, the polymeric chain segments in the crystalline phase are preferentially oriented along the drawing direction with a high degree of orientation whereas the lamellae in the samples are found to be slightly sheared exhibiting oblique surfaces as evidenced by X-ray scattering. SANS indicates that the chains are highly elongated along the drawing direction. Annealing the deformed samples at temperatures where the mechanical alpha-process of polyethylene is active leads to a thickening of both crystalline lamellae and amorphous layers. The chains in the crystalline phase retain their high degree of orientation after annealing while the lamellae are sheared to a larger extent. In addition, there is also lateral growth of the crystalline lamellae during high-temperature annealing. Despite the structural changes of the crystalline and amorphous regions, there is no evidence for global chain relaxation. The global anisotropic shape of the chains is preserved even after prolonged annealing at high temperatures. The results indicate that the mobility of polyethylene chains-as seen, e.g., by 13C NMR-is a local phenomenon. The results also yield new insight into mechanical properties of drawn PE, especially regarding stress relaxation and creep mechanisms.
