Abstract
A catalytic asymmetric tandem Darzens/hemiaminalization reaction of glyoxals with α-bromo-β-esteramides or α-bromo-β-ketoamide was accomplished in the presence of a chiral N,N'-dioxide/Yb(III) complex. Various chiral α,β-epoxy-γ-lactams were obtained in moderate to good yields with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities. The versatility of the transformation is illustrated in the formal synthesis of berkeleyamide D.

Abstract
Classical kinetic resolution, parallel kinetic resolution and desymmetrization were achieved by asymmetric BV oxidation of 3-substituted and meso-disubstituted cycloketones.
Regioselectivity is a crucial issue in Baeyer–Villiger (BV) oxidation. To date, few reports have addressed asymmetric BV oxidation of 3-substituted cycloketones due to the high difficulty of controlling regio- and stereoselectivity. Herein, we report the asymmetric BV oxidation of 3-substituted and meso-disubstituted cycloketones with chiral N,N′-dioxide/Sc(iii) catalysts performed in three ways: classical kinetic resolution, parallel kinetic resolution and desymmetrization. The methodology was applied in the total and formal synthesis of bioactive compounds and natural products. Control experiments and calculations demonstrated that flexible and adjustable catalysts played a significant role in the chiral recognition of substrates.

Abstract
Bipyridine N,N'-dioxide is a structural fragment found in many bioactive compounds. Furthermore, chiral analogues secured their place as powerful Lewis base catalysts. The scope of the existing methods for the synthesis of atropisomeric bipyridine N,N'-dioxides is limited. Herein, we present a practical, highly chemo- and stereoselective method for oxidative dimerization of chiral pyridine N-oxides using O2 as a terminal oxidant. A series of 13 axially chiral bipyridine N,N'-dioxides were synthesized in up to 75% yield.

Abstract
Although isocyanide-based multicomponent reactions were proven to be simple, elegant and facile strategies for the synthesis of highly valuable nitrogen-containing heterocycles, their asymmetric versions accessing to optically active nitrogen heterocyclic compounds are rather limited. Here, we illustrate that, relying on the enantioselective addition of simple isocyanides to C=C bonds, several isocyanide-based multicomponent reactions are realized in the presence of a chiral MgII-N,N'-dioxide catalyst. In the reaction among isocyanide, TMSN3, and alkylidene malonate, three- or four-component reactions could be precisely controlled by modulating reaction conditions, supplying two types of enantioenriched tetrazole-derivatives in moderate to high yields. Possible catalytic cycles via a key zwitterionic intermediate, and the vital roles of H2O or excess ligand are provided based on control experiments. Moreover, taking advantage of this zwitterionic intermediate as a 1,3-dipole, an enantioselective dearomative [3+2] annulation reaction of nonactivated isoquinolines is achieved, furnishing chiral 1,2-dihydroisoquinolines in good to excellent results.

Abstract
The asymmetric Henry reaction of 2-acylpyridine N-oxide remains a challenge as N-oxides generally act as competitive catalyst inhibitors or displace activating ligands. A novel variable yield (up to 99%) asymmetric Henry reaction of 2-acypyridine N-oxides catalyzed by a Ni-aminophenol sulfonamide complex with good to excellent enantioselectivity (up to 99%) has been developed. Mechanistic studies suggest that the unique properties of the electron-pairs of N-oxides for complexation with Ni makes the unexpected mononuclear complex, rather than the previously reported dinuclear complex, the active species.

Abstract
A DMAP-N-oxide, featuring an α-amino acid as the chiral source, was developed, synthesized and applied in asymmetric Steglich rearrangement. A series of O-acylated azlactones afforded C-acylated azlactones possessing a quaternary stereocenter in high yields (up to 97 % yield) and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 97 % ee). Compared to the widespread use of pyridine nitrogen, which serves as the nucleophilic site in the asymmetric acyl transfer reaction, we discovered that chiral DMAP-N-oxides, in which the oxygen now acts as the nucleophilic site, are efficient acyl transfer catalysts. Our finding might open a new door for the development of chiral DMAP-N-oxides for asymmetric acyl transfer reactions.

Abstract
Halofunctionalization methods enable the vicinal difunctionalization of alkenes with heteroatom nucleophiles and halogen moieties. As a fundamental transformation in organic synthesis, the catalytic asymmetric variants have only recently been reported. In sharp contrast to the asymmetric halocyclization of simple alkenes which involves a nucleophile-assisted alkene activation process, the asymmetric halofunctionalization of enones developed by our laboratory features an electrophile-assisted 1,4-addition pathway. Our work in this area has resulted in the development of several different types of regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselective processes, including inter- and intramolecular haloaminations, haloetherifications, and haloazidations. The scope, updated mechanism, limitations, and future perspective of these reactions are discussed.

Abstract
A highly regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselective Diels-Alder reaction of β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoesters with ( E)-1-phenyl dienes has been accomplished by using a stable and easily available chiral N,N'-dioxide/zinc(II) complex as catalyst. Only one isomer of the corresponding cyclohexenes with three chiral centers was obtained in good to excellent yields with excellent ee values under mild reaction conditions. The configurations of the product and chiral N,N'-dioxide/zinc(II) catalyst were identified by X-ray diffraction analysis. In addition, a possible catalytic model was proposed to explain the origin of the asymmetric induction.

Abstract
BF3·OEt2 mediated inverse electron demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) reaction of chalcones with aryl acetylenes is reported for the synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical 2,4,6-triarylpyrylium ions. The protocol provides an effective one-pot method for the utilization of readily available simple substrates under mild reaction conditions leading to a diverse array of pyrylium ions in moderately good yield.

Abstract
A highly enantioselective [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of alkylidene malonates with the internal C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond of N-allenamides was developed with a MgII/N,N'-dioxide complex as a catalyst. Various polysubstituted methylenecyclobutanes were afforded in good yields (up to 99%) and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 96% ee) under mild conditions. The utility of the donor-acceptor cyclobutane product was demonstrated as a masked 1,4-dipole in the formal [4+2] annulation reaction with a silyl enol ether.
