Abstract
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has gained worldwide acceptance as a bearing material used in orthopaedic implants. Despite its widespread use, inherent properties of the polymer continue to limit the wear resistance and the clinical lifespan of implanted knee and hip prosthetics containing UHMWPE components. The degree of crystallinity of UHMWPE is known to strongly influence several of its tensile mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, yield stress, strain-hardening rates, work of fracture and ultimate tensile properties. In this study, medical grade UHMWPE was subjected to four different crystallization conditions resulting in UHMWPE with a range of crystalline morphologies. Thereafter, the crystalline nanostructure was quantitatively characterized using a combination of ultra-small angle X-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry. Low-voltage scanning electron microscopy was employed as a supplementary technique to compare the crystalline morphology resulting from each crystallization condition. In addition, uniaxial tensile tests were performed to assess the effects of crystallization conditions on the mechanical properties of UHMWPE. This study showed that while crystallization conditions strongly influenced the morphology of UHMWPE, in most cases the mechanical properties of the material were not significantly affected.

Abstract
The thermal behavior of semirigid semicrystalline polymers differs significantly from that of flexible-chain polymers. The origin of the differences is believed to lie in the higher energy expenditure associated with the formation of adjacent re-entry folds at the crystalline surface in the case of semirigid chains. The effect of constraints imposed by the interlamellar amorphous regions on the neighboring crystals was studied with temperature-resolved synchrotron radiation small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The analysis of SAXS patterns with a generalized paracrystalline lamellar stack model indicates that melting of a semirigid-chain polymer is not a random process but that the crystals grown in the smallest amorphous gaps melt first. This suggests that the hitherto largely neglected geometrical confinement effects may play an important role in determining the thermodynamic stability of semirigid-chain polymer crystals.

Abstract
A new class of crystalline inclusion complexes of a multiarm hyperbranched polyether combined with various cyclodextrins (CDs) was successfully prepared. Using self-condensing ring-opening polymerization, a kind of multiarm polyether with a hyperbranched poly(3-ethyl-3-oxetanemethanol) core and multiple linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) arms was obtained. It has been found that this kind of hyperbranched polyether can be dissolved in water. Adding alpha-CDs to the multiarm hyperbranched polyether solution, molecular recognition results in the formation of crystalline inclusion complexes based on the noncovalent interactions between the linear PEG arms of the polyether particles and the alpha-CDs. These multiarm polyether inclusion complexes have been well characterized. Interestingly, quite different from inclusion complexes of CDs and linear polymeric guests, the complexes of the multiarm hyperbranched polyether with alpha-CDs show a novel lamellar morphology. The experimental results validate that the resultant lamellar crystals have a juxtaposed structure. In addition, the formation mechanism of these inclusion complexes of a multiarm polyether with alpha-CDs has also been well described. Besides the role of displacement of associated water molecules and the presence of hydrogen bonding between CDs in channel structure CD inclusion complexes, the noncovalent intermolecular forces between CDs and polymers also play an important role in the formation of complex architectures.

Abstract
The mechanisms of polymer crystallization at the nanometer scale have been investigated with a hot-stage scanning probe microscope (SPM). The processes of lamellar perfection, e.g., lamellar thickening and merging of lamellar fragments, are revealed during the secondary crystallization stage. It is shown that the information contained in SPM images can be comparable to that of time-resolved small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). In addition, SPM opens the way to examine subtle structural changes that would certainly be overlooked in the global morphological parameters obtained from a simple SAXS correlation function analysis.
