Mammary fibromatosis in a female dog: case report

Fibromatosis, or desmoid tumour, is characterized by excessive and infiltrative proliferation of connective tissue originating from aponeurotic muscle structures. Mammary fibromatosis is rare in humans and animals and its precise aetiology is unknown. A 10-year-old mixed-breed female dog developed a mass in the right cranial thoracic mammary gland (M1) and underwent lumpectomy. The mass was firm, with an irregular surface and distinct limits. Microscopically, it was a neoplastic proliferation of fusiform cells with low atypia, interspersed with abundant dense collagenous tissue, confirmed by histochemical staining with Gomori's trichrome and Masson's trichrome and immunopositivity for vimentin and smooth muscle actin, confirming mammary fibromatosis. Mammary fibromatosis in dogs needs further studies to elucidate its clinical, epidemiological and aetiopathogenic aspects.

Mediastinal Desmoid Tumor Presents as Lymphadenopathy in Patient with Lymphoma: A Case Report

Desmoid tumors are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that are rapidly growing but do not metastasize. We present a case of a 75-year-old man with a history of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in remission incidentally found to have an enlarging internal mammary lymph node on screening CT, subsequently diagnosed as a desmoid tumor via biopsy. The patient was deemed unfit for surgical resection and instead underwent urgent radiation and immunotherapy. This report highlights a unique case of desmoid tumor presenting as mediastinal lymphadenopathy.

Nipple-sparing skin-sparing mastectomy and vertical latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction for bilateral fibromatosis of the breast

Fibromatosis of the breast results in aggressive, infiltrative lesions with a tendency for local recurrence. A case of bilateral fibromatosis of the breast treated with nipple-sparing skin-sparing mastectomy and vertical latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction occurring in 22-year-old woman is described herein.

Fibromatosis: The Breast Cancer Imitator

Fibromatosis of the breast is a rare benign tumor that should be included in the differential diagnosis for breast cancer. It is usually indistinguishable from malignancy on ultrasound, mammography, physical examination, and on gross evaluation. Distinction is easily made by histologic findings. This benign tumor does not metastasize, but is locally aggressive and tends to recur postoperatively, which accounts for considerable morbidity. We present two cases and a discussion from the perspective of the radiologist, the surgeon, and the pathologist.

[Primary fibromatosis of the breast]

Primary fibromatosis of the breast is a very rare pathology which looks like a malignant tumor, clinically and radiologically. Fibromatosis of the breast is characterised by a local invasion and a risk of recurrence. Positive diagnosis is provided by histology and its treatment is surgical. The aim of this study was to report one case and to emphasize the difficulties encountered in the diagnosis and the treatment.

Recurrence of desmoid tumor in a multivisceral transplant patient with Gardner's syndrome

BACKGROUND

Desmoid tumors are locally invasive fibromatous tumors, which, in patients with Gardner's syndrome, usually occur in the abdominal wall or intra-abdominally. After excision, they tend to recur, often leading to multiple bowel resections.

METHODS

This is a report of the clinical course of a patient with Gardner's syndrome and desmoid tumor who had multiple enterectomies and gradually developed short-gut syndrome. He required prolonged parenteral nutrition, which damaged the liver. The patient underwent a multivisceral transplantation as a life-saving procedure.

RESULTS

After the transplant, the desmoid tumor recurred in the thoracic wall twice and was successfully resected. It also recurred in the abdominal cavity, compressing the intestinal loops; the tumor was excised uneventfully, leaving the graft intact. The recurrent tumors were all of recipient origin.

CONCLUSIONS

Intestinal and multivisceral transplantation could be considered in patients with short-gut syndrome caused by recurrent desmoid tumor. In the case of posttransplant tumor recurrence, resection is the only option recommended.

Breast and pectoralis musculo-aponeurotic fibromatosis: two independent lesions occurring in the same patient. A case report

We report the first case of primitive breast fibromatosis associated with a synchronous independent musculo-aponeurotic fibromatosis of the omolateral pectoralis major muscle in an otherwise healthy 29-year-old woman without clinical evidence of any genetic syndrome. The primary occurrence of the two lesions was supported by the absence of any macroscopic and microscopic connection. The present case suggests that a pre- or intraoperative frozen section diagnosis of breast fibromatosis should lead the surgeon and pathologist to exclude an independent fibromatosis of the underlying musculo-aponeurotic fascia.
