Widespread reproductive variation in North American turtles: temperature, egg size and optimality

Theory predicts the existence of an optimal offspring size that balances the trade-off between offspring fitness and offspring number. However, in wild populations of many species, egg size can still vary from year to year for unknown reasons. Here, we hypothesize that among-year variation in population mean egg size of freshwater turtles is partly a consequence of their gonadal sensitivity to seasonal temperatures, a physiological mechanism which principally functions to synchronize reproduction with a favorable time of year. As part of this process, among-year variation in seasonal temperatures modifies the extent of egg follicle development, and this may translate into variation in mean egg size among years (both at the individual and population level). To test this hypothesis, we applied an information-theoretic approach to model relationships between mean egg mass and the temperatures experienced during discrete periods of follicular development in wild populations of three turtle species (Chrysemys picta, Chelydra serpentina, Glyptemys insculpta) over 12 consecutive years. Because follicular development occurs in the fall for C. serpentina and G. insculpta, whereas it occurs both in the fall and spring for C. picta, we expected only fall temperatures would explain egg size variation in C. serpentina and G. insculpta, whereas both fall and spring temperatures would correlate with egg size variation in C. picta. These predictions were upheld. We then compared among-year variation in within-female egg and clutch sizes of each species in order to evaluate whether such variation might still be consistent with some tenets of optimal egg size theory. In all three species, we found that clutch sizes vary more than egg sizes in spite of temperature-induced egg size variation, and this pattern of relatively high clutch-size variation matches theoretical predictions. Future work should explore the roles of direct and indirect (i.e., nutritional) influences of temperature on egg size in natural settings.

Assembly of ovarian follicles in the caecilians Ichthyophis tricolor and Gegeneophis ramaswamii: light and transmission electron microscopic study

Though much is known about various aspects of reproductive biology of amphibia, there is little information on the cellular and mechanistic basis of assembly of ovarian follicles in this group. This is especially true of the caecilians. Therefore, taking advantage of the abundant distribution of caecilians in the Western Ghats of India, two species of caecilians, Ichthyophis tricolor and Gegeneophis ramaswamii, were subjected to light and transmission electron microscopic analysis to trace the sequential changes during the assembly of ovarian follicles. The paired ovaries of these caecilians are elongated sac-like structures each including numerous vitellogenic follicles. The follicles are connected by a connective tissue stroma. This stroma contains nests of oogonia, primary oocytes and pregranulosa cells as spatially separated nests. During assembly of follicles the oocytes increase in size and enter the meiotic prophase when the number of nucleoli in the nucleus increases. The mitochondrial cloud or Balbiani vitelline body, initially localized at one pole of the nucleus, disperses through out the cytoplasm subsequently. Synaptonemal complexes are prominent in the pachytene stage oocytes. The pregranulosa cells migrate through the connective tissue fibrils of the stroma and arrive at the vicinity of the meiotic prophase oocytes. On contacting the oocyte, the pregranulosa cells become cuboidal in shape, wrap the diplotene stage oocyte as a discontinuous layer and increase the content of cytoplasmic organelles and inclusions. The oocytes increase in size and are arrested in diplotene when the granulosa cells become flat and form a continuous layer. Soon a perivitelline space appears between the oolemma and granulosa cells, completing the process of assembly of follicles. Thus, the events in the establishment of follicles in the caecilian ovary are described.

Proximate constraints on reproductive output in a northern population of painted turtles: an empirical test of the bet-hedging paradigm

For long-lived, iteroparous organisms whose annual reproductive success is low and unpredictable, the “bet-hedging” life-history paradigm predicts that an increase in resource acquisition should result in an increase in stored lipids and not an increase in reproductive output. We tested whether reproductive patterns in a population of midland painted turtles ( Chrysemys picta marginata Agassiz, 1857) are consistent with this prediction. Assuming that annual temperature variation is a proxy for variation in resource acquisition, we hypothesized that if harvested resources are generally sequestered for future reproduction, then there should be no relationship between clutch frequency (the number of clutches laid per season) and the temperature experienced when no follicular growth occurred. We hypothesized further that if temperature constrains clutch frequency by limiting the amount of energy that can be allocated to reproduction, then clutch frequency would be related only to the temperature experienced during the period in which follicular growth occurred (fall temperature). We found that clutch frequency was primarily related to fall temperature, which suggests that the amount of thermal energy experienced during periods of follicular development limits the amount of stored energy that can be allocated to developing follicles. This pattern of reproductive allocation is consistent with the bet-hedging paradigm.

Seasonal reproductive cycle of the Kemp's ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempi)

The seasonal reproductive cycle of the Kemp's ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempi) was studied under seminatural conditions at the Cayman Turtle Farm, Grand Cayman, British West Indies, from June 1987 to July 1988. Male L. kempi displayed a prenuptial rise in serum testosterone 4 to 5 months prior to the mating period (March). Male testosterone then declined sharply during the mating period. Female L. kempi also displayed a prenuptial rise in serum testosterone, estradiol, and total calcium 4 to 6 months prior to the mating period (March). Female testosterone and estradiol declined during the nesting period (April to July) immediately following the mating period (March). Elevated levels in female estradiol and total calcium corresponded with the period of vitellogenesis as determined from gel electrophoresis and ultrasonography. Serum thyroxine also fluctuated seasonally with elevated levels observed in females associated with the period of vitellogenesis. L. kempi displayed a distinct seasonal reproductive cycle in captivity. Nesting in the captive study group corresponded with nesting in the wild population at Rancho Nuevo, Mexico (April to July). Female endocrine cycles during the nesting period were similar to those observed in the wild population.
