Rapid autocorrection using prescan navigator echoes

Characterization of magnetic interference and image artefacts during simultaneous in-beam MR imaging and proton pencil beam scanning

For the first time, a low-field open magnetic resonance (MR) scanner was combined with a proton pencil beam scanning (PBS) research beamline. The aim of this study was to characterize the magnetic fringe fields produced by the PBS system and measure their effects on MR image quality during simultaneous PBS irradiation and image acquisition. A magnetic field camera measured the change in central resonance frequency (Δf _res) and magnetic field homogeneity (ΔMFH) of the B₀ field of the MR scanner during operation of the beam transport and scanning magnets. The beam energy was varied between 70 - 220 MeV and beam scanning was performed along the central horizontal and vertical axis of a 48 × 24 cm² radiation field. The time structure of the scanning magnets' fringe fields was simultaneously recorded by a tri-axial Hall probe. MR imaging experiments were conducted using the ACR (American College of Radiology) Small MRI Phantom and a spoiled gradient echo pulse sequence during simultaneous volumetric irradiation. Computer simulations were performed to predict the effects of B ₀ field perturbations due to PBS irradiation on MR image formation in k-space. Setting the beam transport magnets, horizontal and vertical scanning magnets resulted in a maximum Δf _res of 50, 235 and 4 Hz, respectively. The ΔMFH was less than 3 parts per million for all measurements. MR images acquired during beam energy variation and vertical beam scanning showed no visual loss in image quality. However, MR images acquired during horizontal beam scanning showed severe coherent ghosting artefacts in phase encoding direction. Both simulated and measured k-space phase maps prove that these artefacts are caused by phase-offsets. This study shows first experimental evidence that simultaneous in-beam MR imaging during proton PBS irradiation is subject to severe loss of image quality in the absence of magnetic decoupling between the PBS and MR system.

Motion correction in MRI of the brain

Subject motion in MRI is a relevant problem in the daily clinical routine as well as in scientific studies. Since the beginning of clinical use of MRI, many research groups have developed methods to suppress or correct motion artefacts. This review focuses on rigid body motion correction of head and brain MRI and its application in diagnosis and research. It explains the sources and types of motion and related artefacts, classifies and describes existing techniques for motion detection, compensation and correction and lists established and experimental approaches. Retrospective motion correction modifies the MR image data during the reconstruction, while prospective motion correction performs an adaptive update of the data acquisition. Differences, benefits and drawbacks of different motion correction methods are discussed.

Extrapolation and correlation (EXTRACT): a new method for motion compensation in MRI

A postprocessing technique is proposed for the correction of both translational and rotational motion artifacts in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The method consists of two steps: 1) k-space extrapolation to generate a motion-free reference, followed by 2) correlation with actual data to estimate motion. In this paper, two different extrapolation methods were investigated for the purpose of motion estimation: edge enhancement and finite-support solution. It was found that finite-support solution performs better near the k-space center, while the edge enhancement method is superior in the outer k-space regions. Therefore, a combination of the two methods was employed to generate a motion-free reference, whose correlations with the acquired data can subsequently determine the object motion. Motion compensation was demonstrated in simulation and in vivo MR experiments. The technique is shown to be robust against noise and various types of motion.

MR Artifacts, Safety, and Quality Control

Artifacts in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging result from the complex interaction of contemporary imager subsystems, including the main magnet, gradient coils, radiofrequency (RF) transmitter and receiver, and reconstruction algorithm used. An understanding of the sources of artifacts enables optimization of the MR imaging system performance. The increasing clinical use of very high magnetic field strengths, high-performance gradients, and multiple RF channels also mandates renewed attention to the biologic effects and physical safety of MR imaging. Radiologists should be aware of the potential physiologic effects of prolonged exposure to magnetic fields, acoustic noise, and RF energy during MR imaging and should use all the available methods for avoiding accidents and adverse effects. Imaging equipment should be regularly tested and monitored to ensure its stability and the uniformity of its functioning. Newly installed or upgraded MR systems should be tested by a physicist or qualified engineer before use. In addition, the authors recommend participation in the MR imaging accreditation program of the American College of Radiology to establish the initial framework for an adequate quality assurance program, which then can be further developed to fulfill local institutional needs.

Floating navigator echo (FNAV) for in-plane 2D translational motion estimation

A modification of the classical navigator echo (NAV) technique is presented whereby both 2D translational motion components are computed from a single navigator line. Instead of acquiring the NAV at the center of the k-space, a kx line is acquired off-center in the phase-encoding (ky) direction as a floating NAV (FNAV). It is shown that the translational motion in both the readout and phase-encoding directions can be computed from this line. The algorithm used is described in detail and verified experimentally. The new technique can be readily implemented to replace classic NAV in MRI sequences, with little to no additional cost or complexity. The new method can help suppress 2D translational motion and provide more accurate motion estimates for other motion-suppression techniques, such as the diminishing variance algorithm.

Prospective registration of human head magnetic resonance images for reproducible slice positioning using localizer images

PURPOSE

To facilitate assessing brain tumor growth and progression of stroke lesions by reproducible slice positioning in human head magnetic resonance (MR) images, a method for prospective registration is proposed that adjusts the image slice position without moving the patient and with no additional scans.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The gradient reference frame of follow-up examinations was adjusted to achieve the same image slice positioning relative to the patient as in the previous examination. The three-dimensional geometrical transformation parameters for the gradients were determined using two-dimensional image registration of three orthogonal localizer images. The method was developed and evaluated using a phantom with arbitrarily adjustable position. Feasibility for in vivo applications was demonstrated with brain MR imaging (MRI) of healthy volunteers.

RESULTS

Standard retrospective registration was used for assessing the quality of the method. The accuracy of the realignment was 0.0 mm +/- 1.2 mm and -0.2 degrees +/- 0.9 degrees (mean +/- SD) in phantom experiments. In 10 examinations of volunteers, misalignments up to 49.2 mm and 21 degrees were corrected. The accuracy of the realignment after prospective registration was 0.1 mm +/- 1.5 mm and 0.2 degrees +/- 1.5 degrees.

CONCLUSION

Image-based prospective registration using localizer images of the pre- and postexaminations is a robust method for reproducible slice positioning.

Image-based EPI ghost correction using an algorithm based on projection onto convex sets (POCS)

This work describes the use of a method, based on the projection onto convex sets (POCS) algorithm, for reduction of the N/2 ghost in echo-planar imaging (EPI). In this method, ghosts outside the parent image are set to zero and a model k-space is obtained from the Fourier transform (FT) of the resulting image. The zeroth- and first-order phase corrections for each line of the original k-space are estimated by comparison with the corresponding line in the model k-space. To overcome problems of phase wrapping, the first-order phase corrections for the lines of the original k-space are estimated by registration with the corresponding lines in the model k-space. It is shown that applying these corrections will result in a reduction of the ghost, and that iterating the process will result in a convergence towards an image in which the ghost is minimized. The method is tested on spin-echo EPI data. The results show that the method is robust and remarkably effective, reducing the N/2 ghost to a level nearly comparable to that achieved with reference scans.

Medical image registration

Radiological images are increasingly being used in healthcare and medical research. There is, consequently, widespread interest in accurately relating information in the different images for diagnosis, treatment and basic science. This article reviews registration techniques used to solve this problem, and describes the wide variety of applications to which these techniques are applied. Applications of image registration include combining images of the same subject from different modalities, aligning temporal sequences of images to compensate for motion of the subject between scans, image guidance during interventions and aligning images from multiple subjects in cohort studies. Current registration algorithms can, in many cases, automatically register images that are related by a rigid body transformation (i.e. where tissue deformation can be ignored). There has also been substantial progress in non-rigid registration algorithms that can compensate for tissue deformation, or align images from different subjects. Nevertheless many registration problems remain unsolved, and this is likely to continue to be an active field of research in the future.
