Mixed self-assembled monolayers of azobenzene photoswitches with trifluoromethyl and cyano end groups

Mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiolates carrying azobenzene chromophores with either a trifluoromethyl or a cyano substituent have been studied. High-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy proves that the ratio of adsorbed molecules can be arbitrarily adjusted via the molar fractions in solution. As a function of these molar fractions core level shifts are observed which are attributed to local work-function changes. By simulating the electric dipole field distribution, the continuous core level shifts are ascribed to a homogeneous mixture of molecules with different end groups adsorbed on adjacent lattice sites. Near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure measurements reveal formation of well-ordered SAMs. Despite the difference in dipole moment of the end groups, the molecular tilt and twist angles are identical for both single-component SAMs and a 1:1 mixed SAM.

Novel anthracene materials for applications in lithography and reversible photoswitching by light and air

Herein we demonstrate how the photoreaction between anthracenes and singlet oxygen ((1)O(2)) is employed for applications either as photoswitch or as photoresist. Thin films of the diaryl-alkyl anthracene 1 and the analogous oligomeric species 2 were irradiated under photomasks to generate pattern structures composed of 1/1-O(2) and 2/2-O(2). Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) provided a powerful and nondestructive method to image the pattern information. The following studies based on AFM, KPFM and contact angle measurements unfold that the two species 1 and 2 underwent different progressions after the imaging step. Degrading is observed for the monomeric compound 1 and the pattern eventually becomes recognizable in topography. In the oxidized state (1-O(2)) the monomeric species remains physically stable. In consequence, the unreacted portion is removable and the remaining oxygenated form 1-O(2) is sufficiently stable to protect an underlying substrate (e.g., silver) from etching. Thus, the system 1/1-O(2) operates as photoresist. On the other hand, both states of the oligomer 2 remain stable. The film is stable up to temperatures >120 degrees C required to erase the pattern within acceptable time by cycloreversion. Anthracene 2 therefore acts as erasable and rewritable photochromic switch. The different behavior between 1 and 2 is explained by phase transitions which cause crystallization and finally ablation. Such transitions affect only the monomeric system 1/1-O(2) and not the oligomeric system 2/2-O(2). In conclusion, we designed two very similar materials based on diarylanthracenes, which can act either as a photoresist or as a rewritable photochromic switch.

Preparation of Azobenzenealkanethiols for Self-Assembled Monolayers with Photoswitchable Properties

A series of azobenzenealkanethiol compounds with the structure p-RC6H4N=NC6H4(CH2)nSH (n = 3, 4) was synthesized using a divergent strategy with the two anilines H2NC6H4(CH2)nSAc as central compounds. This strategy provides fast access to a broad variety of the respective azobenzenethiols without (note!) an oxygen atom in the alkyl chain, thus permitting the self-assembly of these compounds onto gold in a predictable conformation, also taking advantage of the previously found odd–even effect in aromatic–aliphatic hybrid systems. Initial experiments indicate that all of these molecules indeed form dense monolayers, in which the orientation of the azobenzene unit is determined by the number of methylene groups in the aliphatic part of the molecules.

From anisotropic photo-fluidity towards nanomanipulation in the optical near-field

An increase in random molecular vibrations of a solid owing to heating above the melting point leads to a decrease in its long-range order and a loss of structural symmetry. Therefore conventional liquids are isotropic media. Here we report on a light-induced isothermal transition of a polymer film from an isotropic solid to an anisotropic liquid state in which the degree of mechanical anisotropy can be controlled by light. Whereas during irradiation by circular polarized light the film behaves as an isotropic viscoelastic fluid, it shows considerable fluidity only in the direction parallel to the light field vector under linear polarized light. The fluidization phenomenon is related to photoinduced motion of azobenzene-functionalized molecular units, which can be effectively activated only when their transition dipole moments are oriented close to the direction of the light polarization. We also describe here how the photofluidization allows nanoscopic elements of matter to be precisely manipulated.

Optical patterning in azobenzene polymer films

Thin azobenzene polymer films show a very unusual property, namely optically induced material transport. The underlying physics for this phenomenon has not yet been thoroughly explained. Nevertheless, this effect enables one to inscribe different patterns onto film surfaces, including one- and two-dimensional periodic structures. Typical sizes of such structures are of the order of micrometers, i.e. related to the interference pattern made by the laser used for optical excitation. In this study we have measured the mechanical properties of one- and two-dimensional gratings, with a high lateral resolution, using force-distance curves and pulse force mode of the atomic force microscope. We also report on the generation of considerably finer structures, with a typical size of 100 nm, which were inscribed onto the polymer surface by the tip of a scanning near-field optical microscope used as an optical pen. Such inscription not only opens new application possibilities but also gives deeper insight into the fundamentals physics underlying optically induced material transport.
