CO(2) concentration measurements on air samples by mass spectrometry

Fully automated, high-throughput instrumentation for measuring the δ13C value of methane and application of the instrumentation to rice paddy samples

RATIONALE

The stable carbon isotope ratio ((13)C/(12)C or δ(13)C value) of methane (CH4) produced in methanogenic environments contains information about primary source material, CH4 production pathways, degree of oxidation, and transport. However, the availability of δ(13)C-CH4 data is severely limited because isotope analysis methods are low throughput, owing primarily to the need for manual processing steps. High-throughput, fully automated measurement is necessary to facilitate the use of the δ(13)C signature in understanding CH4 biogeochemistry.

METHODS

We modified a conventional continuous-flow (CF) gas chromatography/combustion/isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) instrument system by incorporating (i) automated sample injection, (ii) a newly developed temperature-control unit for preconcentration and cryofocus traps, and (iii) an automatic system for liquid-nitrogen refilling. The system, which could run unattended for 1 day, was used to obtain δ(13)C-CH4 data for CH4 samples collected from an irrigated rice paddy with an automated closed-chamber system.

RESULTS

Using the fully automated CF-IRMS system, we measured δ(13)C-CH4 data for 77 samples during a 21.5-h continuous run (17 min per sample) with high precision (1σ = 0.11‰, reproducibility) and moderate consumption of liquid nitrogen (11 L). Application of the system to CH4 samples obtained from the rice paddy revealed distinct seasonal and diurnal variations in δ(13)C values with the highest temporal resolution ever reported.

CONCLUSIONS

A fully automated, high-throughput system for the measurement of δ(13)C-CH4 values was developed and used to analyze air samples obtained from a rice paddy. Our results demonstrate the high potential of this system for obtaining δ(13)C data useful for process-level understanding of CH4 biogeochemistry with respect to spatiotemporal variation of CH4 sources and how that variation is affected by environmental and management factors.

Porous carbon material containing CaO for acidic gas capture: preparation and properties

A one-step process for the preparation of CaO-containing porous carbons is described. Mixtures of poly(ethylene terephthalate) with natural limestone were pyrolyzed and thus hybrid sorbents could be easily obtained. The polymeric material and the mineral served as a carbon precursor and CaO delivering agent, respectively. We discuss effects of the preparation conditions and the relative amounts of the raw materials used for the preparations on the porosity of the hybrid products. The micropore areas and volumes of the obtained products tended to decrease with increasing CaO contents. Increase in the preparation temperature entailed a decrease in the micropore volume, whereas the mesopore volume increased. The pore creation mechanism is proposed on the basis of thermogravimetric and temperature-programmed desorption measurements. The prepared CaO-containing porous carbons efficiently captured SO2 and CO2 from air. Washing out of CaO from the hybrid materials was confirmed as a suitable method to obtain highly porous carbon materials.

A system for high-quality CO2 isotope analyses of air samples collected by the CARIBIC Airbus A340-600

In 2007, JRC-IRMM began a series of atmospheric CO2 isotope measurements, with the focus on understanding instrumental effects, corrections as well as metrological aspects. The calibration approach at JRC-IRMM is based on use of a plain CO2 sample (working reference CO2) as a calibration carrier and CO2-air mixtures (in high-pressure cylinders) to determine the method-related correction under actual analytical conditions (another calibration carrier, in the same form as the samples). Although this approach differs from that in other laboratories, it does give a direct link to the primary reference NBS-19-CO2. It also helps to investigate the magnitude and nature for each of the instrumental corrections and allows for the quantification of the uncertainty introduced. Critical tests were focused on the instrumental corrections. It was confirmed that the use of non-symmetrical capillary crimping (an approach used here to deal with small samples) systematically modifies delta13C(CO2) and delta18O(CO2), with a clear dependence on the amount of extracted CO2. However, the calibration of CO2-air mixtures required the use of the symmetrical dual-inlet mode. As a proof of our approach, we found that delta13C(CO2) on extracts from mixtures agreed (within 0.010 per thousand) with values obtained from the 'mother' CO2 used for the mixtures. It was further found that very low levels of hydrocarbons in the pumping systems and the isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) instrument itself were critical. The m/z 46 values (consequently the calculated delta18O(CO2) values) are affected by several other effects with traces of air co-trapped with frozen CO2 being the most critical. A careful cryo-distillation of the extracted CO2 is recommended. After extensive testing, optimisation, and routine automated use, the system was found to give precise data on air samples that can be traced with confidence to the primary standards. The typical total combined uncertainty in delta13C(CO2) and delta18O(CO2) on the VPDB-CO2 scale, estimated on runs of CO2-air mixtures, is +/-0.040 per thousand and 0.060 per thousand (2-sigma values). Inter-comparison with MPI-BGC resulted in a scale discrepancy of a similar magnitude. Although the reason(s) for this discrepancy still need to be understood, this basically confirms the approach of using specifically prepared CO2-air mixtures as a calibration carrier, in order to achieve scale unification among laboratories. As important practical application and as a critical test, JRC-IRMM took part in the passenger aircraft-based global monitoring project CARIBIC (http://www.caribic-atmospheric.com). In this way, reliable CO2 isotope data for the tropopause region and the free troposphere were obtained. From June 2007 to January 2009, approximately 500 CARIBIC air samples have been analysed. Some flights demonstrated a compact correlation of both delta13C(CO2) and delta18O(CO2) with respect to CO2 concentration, demonstrating mixing of tropospheric and stratospheric air masses. These excellent correlations provide an independent, realistic data quality check.

Measurements and trend analysis of O2, CO2 and delta13C of CO2 from the high altitude research station Junfgraujoch, Switzerland--a comparison with the observations from the remote site Puy de Dôme, France

Atmospheric O2 and CO2 flask measurements from the high altitude research station Jungfraujoch, Switzerland, and from the observatory at Puy de Dôme, France, are presented. Additionally, the Jungfraujoch delta13C record of CO2 is discussed. The observations on flask samples collected at the Jungfraujoch station show, since 2003, an enhancement of the oxygen trend which amounts to about 45 per meg/year with a corresponding CO2 increase of around 2.4 ppm/year. This enhancement is comparable with that observed at the Puy de Dôme station where oxygen, since mid 2002, has decreased with a rate of about 50 per meg/year whilst the CO2 increase was of around 1.7 ppm/year but exhibiting a higher variability. Several processes influence deltaO2/N2. However, these processes are marked with different oxidation ratios (O2:CO2) that can be used to distinguish them. The apparent slopes calculated from correlation plots between de-trended CO2 and deltaO2/N2 records as well as between corresponding trends are significantly larger than the observe ratios depending on processes within the ocean, it is to our understanding the only possibility to explain our observations. The stability of the deltaO2/N2 scale is critical in this regard, therefore, it is addressed here and we found no significant scale drift which would influence our trend calculations. In our view more important are criterions on the data selection before trend analysis.

Atmospheric O2, CO2 and delta13C measurements from aircraft sampling over Griffin Forest, Perthshire, UK

Regular vertical aircraft sampling has been performed in the lower troposphere above Griffin Forest, near Aberfeldy, Perthshire, UK (56 degrees 37'N, 3 degrees 47'W), between February 2003 and May 2004, for analysis of O2/N2, CO2 and delta13C of CO2. We sampled flasks between 800 and 3100 m above sea level. The peak-to-peak amplitude of the seasonal cycle of O2/N2 decreases from 171 per meg at 800 m to 113 per meg at 3100 m. Furthermore, the seasonal cycle is shifted from low to high altitudes with a lag of about 1 month. The same features are observed for CO2 with a decrease in the peak-to-peak amplitude of the seasonal cycle from 17.6 ppm at 800 m to 11.4 ppm at 3100 m. The vertical profiles show decreasing O2/N2 ratios in summer and increasing O2/N2 ratios in wintertime with increasing sampling height, due to surface exchange of oxygen with the land biosphere and the ocean. The O2:CO2 exchange ratios of the vertical profiles vary between -1.5 and -2.4 mol O2/mol CO2.
