A grade-six reading level key for the multiple affect adjective check list-revised

A scoring key containing adjectives from the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List-Revised (MAACL-R) at or below the Grade 6 reading level (MAACL-R6) was used to rescore data from two nonreferred samples (college students, ns = 52 and 78) and one referred sample of 202 from a community mental health center outpatient clinic. Reliability (measures of internal consistency and test-retest) and validity (correlations with five 5-point self-rating mood scales) were almost as high as those for the MAACL-R, and convergence among the MAACL-R6 scales was not increased. Means for the referred group were significantly higher.

An empirical demonstration of the problem of cluster dissimilarity from different clustering methods in a single sample

This study utilized the four most commonly employed clustering techniques (CLINK, SLINK, UPGMA, and Ward's) to illustrate the dissimilarity of cluster group membership (based upon short-form MMPI scale scores and a measure of alcohol dependency) between partitions in a sample of 113 impaired driving offenders. Results, examined with the Rand index of cluster comparison, demonstrated that cluster group membership can be so different between alternative clustering methods as to equal chance assignment. Cautions are given with regard to the use of cluster analysis for other than exploratory work. In particular, psychologists are cautioned against attempting to use cluster analysis based upon personality inventory scores (which can never be wholly reliable or discrete) for patient classification.

MMPI differences for renal, psychiatric, and general medical patients

Renal failure has both medical and psychological implications. Indeed, various psychiatric problems related to end-stage renal disease have been reported in the literature; however, the focus has been on anxiety and depression. While previous research has dealt with the comparisons of patients with renal failure, few studies have investigated the comparison of renal patients with psychiatric and general medical patients. The present study compared renal patients (N = 24) with a group of depressed psychiatric patients (N = 24) and a group of general medical patients (N = 24) on the MMPI. The results suggested that the renal group presented a psychological profile that more closely resembled that of the depressed psychiatric group than that of patients with other chronic medical conditions.

Utility of the Mini-Mult in a community mental health setting

The usefulness of the Mini-Mult in a community mental health setting was investigated. The scale was administered to male and female suicidals, nonsuicidals, alcoholics, nonalcoholics, suicidal alcoholics, and suicidal nonalcoholics. The results indicate that the Mini-Mult may have some utility in a community mental health setting.

Psychological adjustment and neuropsychological performance in diabetic patients

The Faschingbauer Abbreviated MMPI (FAM) was utilized to compare diabetic (N = 39) with non-diabetic chronic illness patients (N = 20) and healthy controls (N = 24). The healthy controls were significantly different from the diabetic and chronic illnesses groups, but the latter two groups were not significantly differentiated. Similarly, in comparison with the healthy groups, both the chronic illnesses group and the diabetic group had significant elevations on the first three clinical subscales of the FAM: Hypochondriasis, Depression, and Hysteria. On the basis of the FAM results, the diabetic patients were divided into a "well" adjusted and a "poorly" adjusted group, and comparisons were made on a variety of neuropsychological measures, including the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Wechsler Memory Scale, and Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery. Results demonstrated negligible effect of poor adjustment on neuropsychological performance.
