Abstract
The Stokes-Einstein relation, which relates the diffusion coefficient of a molecule to its hydrodynamic radius, is commonly used to determine molecular sizes in chemical analysis methods. Here, we combine the size sensitivity of such diffusion-based methods with the structure sensitivity of Raman spectroscopy by performing Raman diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (Raman-DOSY). The core of the Raman-DOSY setup is a flow cell with a Y-shaped channel containing two inlets: one for the sample solution and one for the pure solvent. The two liquids are injected at the same flow rate, giving rise to two parallel laminar flows in the channel. After the flow stops, the solute molecules diffuse from the solution-filled half of the channel into the solvent-filled half at a rate determined by their hydrodynamic radius. The arrival of the solute molecules in the solvent-filled half of the channel is recorded in a spectrally resolved manner by Raman microspectroscopy. From the time series of Raman spectra, a two-dimensional Raman-DOSY spectrum is obtained, which has the Raman frequency on one axis and the diffusion coefficient (or equivalently, hydrodynamic radius) on the other. In this way, Raman-DOSY spectrally resolves overlapping Raman peaks arising from molecules of different sizes. We demonstrate Raman-DOSY on samples containing up to three compounds and derive the diffusion coefficients of small molecules, proteins, and supramolecules (micelles), illustrating the versatility of Raman-DOSY. Raman-DOSY is label-free and does not require deuterated solvents and can thus be applied to samples and matrices that might be difficult to investigate with other diffusion-based spectroscopy methods.

Abstract
We report herein a series of organometallic Borromean rings (BRs) and [2]catenanes prepared from benzobiscarbene ligands. The reaction of dinickel complexes of the benzobiscarbenes 1 a-1 c with a thiazolothiazole bridged bipyridyl ligand L2 led by self-assembly to a series of organometallic BRs. Solvophobic effects played a crucial role in the formation and stability of the interlocked species. The stability of BRs is related to the N-alkyl substituents at the precursors 1 a-1 c, where longer alkyl substitutes improve stability and inter-ring interactions. Solvophobic effects are also important for the stability of [2]catenanes prepared from 1 a-1 c and a flexible bipyridyl ligand L3 . In solution, an equilibrium between the [2]catenanes and their macrocyclic building blocks was observed. High proportions of [2]catenanes were obtained in concentrated solutions or polar solvents. The proportion of [2]catenanes in solution could be further enhanced by lengthening of the N-alkyl substitutes.

Abstract
Self-assembled coordination complexes prepared from a combination of Pd(II) components with one or more types of high-symmetry or low-symmetry bis/tris/tetrakis-monodentate ligands are considered in this review. The structures of these complexes are viewed in terms of the presence of a metallo-macromonocycle or conjoined metallo-macromonocycles/metallocages in the frameworks. Analysis of the typical molecular structures revealed an open truth that one or more units of metallo-macromonocycles can be conjoined to afford planar or non-planar systems. In the same line, the enveloping surface of a 3D cage can be considered as a multiple number of conjoined metallomacrocycles that embrace a 3D space from all directions. However, two or more units of cages are conjoined in a multi-3D-cavity cage system and such a system is considered as a conjoined cage. Construction of such conjoined cages having a finite but multiple number of 3D-cavities unified in a single molecular architecture is a challenging task when compared to that of single-3D-cavity based compounds. Conjoining of as many as four units of 3D cages is known so far. Single- as well as multi-cavity cages of lower symmetry have become a very recent trend in this regard where low-symmetry ligands or mixed ligand ensembles are crafted in the framework of the cages. Other structural diversities like helicity in cages, and supramolecular isomerism are also included in this assorted literature work. Although isomerism in classical coordination complexes is well known, it is very less studied in self-assembled coordination complexes. Ligand isomerism is one such feature that is reviewed here. The dynamic behavior of the cages results in interesting reactivity aspects. A large variety of dynamic processes are collected under an umbrella, i.e., "ligand exchange reactions" and described with examples. Intermolecular interaction among the already self-assembled molecules is possible in solution, solid, and gel-phases as discussed in the last part of this review. The understanding of intermolecular interaction is likely to influence different areas of research including crystal engineering, and materials chemistry.

Abstract
We report herein the first all-donor aromatic [2]catenane formed through dynamic combinatorial chemistry, using single component libraries. The building block is a benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene derivative, a π-donor molecule, with cysteine appendages that allow for disulfide exchange. The hydrophobic effect plays an essential role in the formation of the all-donor [2]catenane. The design of the building block allows the formation of a quasi-fused pentacyclic core, which enhances the stacking interactions between the cores. The [2]catenane has chiro-optical and fluorescent properties, being also the first known DCC-disulphide-based interlocked molecule to be fluorescent. An all-donor [2]catenane has been synthesised via dynamic combinatorial chemistry. It features stacked benzodithiophenes which are quasi-pentacyclic through hydrogen bonding.![]()

Abstract
Despite extensive research and several stunning breakthroughs in the synthesis of interlocked molecular species, [3]catenanes, Borromean rings and ring-in-ring complexes are exceedingly rare and their targeted synthesis remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a series of Cp*Rh-based homogeneous and heterogeneous interlocked structures have been prepared by coordination-driven self-assembly, not only including metalla[2]catenanes and molecular Borromean rings, but also linear metalla[3]catenanes and ring-in-ring complexes. The interlocked structures are all based on bithiophenyl groups. The bithiophenyl groups effectively enhance the strength of the inter-ring interactions and play a crucial role in the formation of these interlocked structures. By taking advantage of the strong interaction between π-donor (D) and π-acceptor (A) groups, the electron-deficient methylviologen cation was introduced into a cationic metallarectangle based on bithiophenyl groups. Taking inspiration from these results, a cationic metallarectangle based on A units was threaded into a metallarectangle based on D units, leading to a heterogeneous D–A ring-in-ring structure.

Abstract
Since the emergence of the concept of chemical topology, interlocked molecular assemblies have graduated from academic curiosities and poorly defined species to become synthetic realities. Coordination-directed synthesis provides powerful, diverse, and increasingly sophisticated protocols for accessing interlocked molecules. Originally, metal ions were employed solely as templates to gather and position building blocks in entwined or threaded arrangements. Recently, metal centers have increasingly featured within the backbones of the integral structural elements, which in turn use noncovalent interactions to self-assemble into intricate topologies. By outlining ingenious recent examples as well as seminal classic cases, this Review focuses on the role of metal-ligand paradigms in assembling molecular links. In addition, the ever-evolving approaches to efficient assembly, the structural features of the resulting architectures, and their prospects for the future are also presented.

Abstract
Metal-driven self-assembly is one of the most effective approaches to lucidly design a large range of discrete 2D and 3D coordination architectures/complexes. Palladium(II)-based self-assembled coordination architectures are usually prepared by using suitable metal components, in either a partially protected form (PdL') or typical form (Pd; charges are not shown), and designed ligand components. The self-assembled molecules prepared by using a metal component and only one type of bi- or polydentate ligand (L) can be classified in the homoleptic series of complexes. On the other hand, the less explored heteroleptic series of complexes are obtained by using a metal component and at least two different types of non-chelating bi- or polydentate ligands (such as La and Lb ). Methods that allow the controlled generation of single, discrete heteroleptic complexes are less understood. A survey of palladium(II)-based self-assembled coordination cages that are heteroleptic has been made. This review article illustrates a systematic collection of such architectures and credible justification of their formation, along with reported functional aspects of the complexes. The collected heteroleptic assemblies are classified here into three sections: 1) [(PdL')m (La )x (Lb )y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of La and Lb is equal; 2) [(PdL')m (La )x (Lb )y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of La and Lb is different; and 3) [Pdm (La )x (Lb )y ]-type complexes, in which the denticity of La and Lb is equal. Representative examples of some important homoleptic architectures are also provided, wherever possible, to set a background for a better understanding of the related heteroleptic versions. The purpose of this review is to pave the way for the construction of several unique heteroleptic coordination assemblies that might exhibit emergent supramolecular functions.

Abstract
We report the efficient condensation of imine-based macrocycles from dialdehyde A and aliphatic diamines B n in pure water. Within the libraries, we identified a family of homologous amphiphilic [2]catenanes, whose self-assembly is primarily driven by the hydrophobic effect. The length and odd-even character of the diamine alkyl linker dictate both the yield and the conformation of the [2]catenanes, whose particular thermodynamic stability further shifts the overall equilibrium in favour of imine condensation. These findings highlight the role played by solvophobic effects in the self-assembly of complex architectures.

Abstract
In this proof-of-concept study, an active-template coupling is used to demonstrate a novel kinetic self-sorting process. This process iteratively increases the yield of the target heterocircuit [3]rotaxane product at the expense of other threaded species.

Abstract
Homochiral strands of alternating alleno-acetylenes and phenanthroline ligands (P)-1 and (P2)-2, as well as their corresponding enantiomers, selectively assemble with the addition of silver(I) salt to yield dinuclear and trinuclear double helicates, respectively. Upon increasing the solvent polarity, the dinuclear and trinuclear helicates interlock to form a [2]catenane and bis[2]catenane, bearing 14 chirality elements, respectively. The solid-state structure of the [2]catenane reveals a nearly perfect fit of the interlocked strands, and the ECD spectra show a significant amplification of the chiroptical properties upon catenation, indicating stabilization of the helical secondary structure. Highly selective narcissistic self-sorting was demonstrated for a racemic mixture consisting of both short and long alleno-acetylenic strands, highlighting their potential for the preparation of linear catenanes of higher order.

Abstract
In the last decade diffusion NMR and diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) have become important analytical tools for the characterization of supramolecular systems in solution. Diffusion NMR can be used to glean information on the (effective) size and shape of molecular species, as well as to probe inter-molecular interactions and can be used to estimate the association constant (Ka) of a complex. In addition, the diffusion coefficient, as obtained from diffusion NMR, is a much more intuitive parameter than the chemical shift for probing self-association, aggregation and inter-molecular interactions. The diffusion coefficient may be an even more important analytical parameter in systems in which the formed supramolecular entity has the same symmetry as its building units, when there is a large change in the molecular weight, where many molecular species are involved in the formation of the supramolecular systems, and when proton transfer may occur which, in turn, may affect the chemical shift. Some of the self-assembled molecular capsules and cages prepared in the last decade represent such supramolecular systems and in the present review, following a short introduction on diffusion NMR, we survey the contribution of diffusion NMR and DOSY in the field of molecular containers and capsules. We will first focus on the role played by diffusion NMR in the field of hydrogen bond driven self-assembled capsules. We then survey the contributions of diffusion NMR and DOSY to the study and characterization of metal-ligand cages and capsules. Finally, we describe a few recent applications of diffusion NMR in the field of hydrophobic, electrostatic and covalent containers.

Abstract
Half a century after Schill and Lüttringhaus carried out the first directed synthesis of a [2]catenane, a plethora of strategies now exist for the construction of molecular Hopf links (singly interlocked rings), the simplest type of catenane. The precision and effectiveness with which suitable templates and/or noncovalent interactions can arrange building blocks has also enabled the synthesis of intricate and often beautiful higher order interlocked systems, including Solomon links, Borromean rings, and a Star of David catenane. This Review outlines the diverse strategies that exist for synthesizing catenanes in the 21st century and examines their emerging applications and the challenges that still exist for the synthesis of more complex topologies.

Abstract
In the context of prebiotic chemistry, one of the characteristics of mixed nitrogenous-oxygenous chemistry is its propensity to give rise to highly complex reaction mixtures. There is therefore an urgent need to develop improved spectroscopic techniques if onerous chromatographic separations are to be avoided. One potential avenue is the combination of pure shift methodology, in which NMR spectra are measured with greatly improved resolution by suppressing multiplet structure, with diffusion-ordered spectroscopy, in which NMR signals from different species are distinguished through their different rates of diffusion. Such a combination has the added advantage of working with intact mixtures, allowing analyses to be carried out without perturbing mixtures in which chemical entities are part of a network of reactions in equilibrium. As part of a systems chemistry approach towards investigating the self-assembly of potentially prebiotic small molecules, we have analysed the complex mixture arising from mixing glycolaldehyde and cyanamide, in a first application of pure shift DOSY NMR to the characterisation of a partially unknown reaction composition. The work presented illustrates the potential of pure shift DOSY to be applied to chemistries that give rise to mixtures of compounds in which the NMR signal resolution is poor. The direct formation of potential RNA and TNA nucleoside precursors, amongst other adducts, was observed. These preliminary observations may have implications for the potentially prebiotic assembly chemistry of pyrimidine threonucleotides, and therefore of TNA, by using recently reported chemistries that yield the activated pyridimidine ribonucleotides.

Abstract
During the last ten years, our research group has been applying metal-mediated self-assembly processes to the construction of multiporphyrin functional assemblies. The construction of well-defined and discrete supramolecular structures resulting from self-assembly requires the use of multiple and separated connections operating in one or more closed loops. Consequently, the great majority of the multiporphyrin assemblies that we have prepared are of cyclic nature. We have placed special emphasis not only on the characterization in solution of the formed assemblies but also on the thermodynamic characterization of the assembly process and in the assessment of cooperativity. Finally, we also present examples in which functionality has been derived from the three-dimensional structures of multicomponent assemblies.

Abstract
The usefulness of diffusion ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) as a characterization technique for systems that are non-covalently associated in solution is demonstrated. This study investigated the diffusion properties of a series of porphyrin-based building blocks and host materials which culminated in the characterization of a self-assembled porphyrin-containing capsule.

Abstract
More than a quarter of a century after the first metal template synthesis of a [2]catenane in Strasbourg, there now exists a plethora of strategies available for the construction of mechanically bonded and entwined molecular level structures. Catenanes, rotaxanes, knots and Borromean rings have all been successfully accessed by methods in which metal ions play a pivotal role. Originally metal ions were used solely for their coordination chemistry; acting either to gather and position the building blocks such that subsequent reactions generated the interlocked products or by being an integral part of the rings or "stoppers" of the interlocked assembly. Recently the role of the metal has evolved to encompass catalysis: the metal ions not only organize the building blocks in an entwined or threaded arrangement but also actively promote the reaction that covalently captures the interlocked structure. This Review outlines the diverse strategies that currently exist for forming mechanically bonded molecular structures with metal ions and details the tactics that the chemist can utilize for creating cross-over points, maximizing the yield of interlocked over non-interlocked products, and the reactions-of-choice for the covalent capture of threaded and entwined intermediates.

Abstract
We describe a strategy for assembling different macrocycles onto a nonsymmetrical rotaxane thread in a precise sequence. If the macrocycles are small and rigid enough so that they cannot pass each other then the sequence is maintained mechanically, affording stereoisomerism in a manner reminiscent of atropisomerism. The method is exemplified through the synthesis of a pair of [3]rotaxane diastereomers that are constitutionally identical other than for the sequence of the different macrocycles on the thread. The synthesis features the iterative binding of different palladium(II) pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide complexes to a pyridine ligand on the thread followed by their macrocyclization by ring-closing olefin metathesis. Removal of the palladium(II) from the first rotaxane formed frees the pyridine site to coordinate to a second, different, palladium(II) pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide unit which, following macrocyclization, provides a multiring rotaxane of predetermined macrocycle sequence.
