Abstract
Since carbon quantum dots have high photoluminescent efficiency, it has been a desired material in sensor and bioimaging applications. In recent years, the green chemistry approach has been preferred and the production of quantum dots has been reported in many studies using different precursors from natural, abundant, or waste sources. Hydrothermal, chemical oxidation, microwave supported, ultrasonic, solvothermal, pyrolysis, laser etching, solid-state, plasma, and electrochemical methods have been reported in the literature. In this review article, green chemistry strategies for carbon quantum dot synthesis is summarized and compared with conventional methods using methodologic and statistical data. Furthermore, a detailed discussion on sensor and bioimaging applications of carbon quantum dots produced with green synthesis approaches are presented with a special focus on the last decade.

Abstract
We report a series of room temperature phosphorescent compounds 1-6 composed of triarylborane (TAB) and cyclometallated iridium complexes. The optical characteristics such as energy of transition and luminescence quantum yield of these compounds can be conveniently fine-tuned by judiciously varying the cyclometallating ligand and the spacer between boron and iridium centers. Compounds 1-6 exhibit bright phosphorescence with the emission color ranging from green to red under a N2 atmosphere. A maximum quantum yield of 0.95 was observed for complex 2. Complexes 1-6 exhibit a rare type of dual emission from singlet and triplet excited states under ambient conditions. The experimental observations are well supported by the theoretical calculations.

Abstract
Regardless of rapid development of organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) originating from phosphors in crystals, highly efficient and persistent RTP from common fluorophores is very rare. Herein, 1,8-naphthalimide (NI), a common organic fluorophore, is doped into organic cations of 2D layered organic/inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) to yield thin films and powders with yellow RTP of NI in air. The triplet excitons of NI are mainly derived from Wannier excitons of inorganic perovskite through energy transfer (ET) for films, and from singlet excitons of NI through intersystem crossing (ISC) for powder. Consequently, the quantum yield (Φ P), lifetime (τ) and color of RTP can be tuned by changing the fluorophore and halide in the perovskites, as well as their solid morphology. A white emission, comprising the blue one from the perovskite and yellow RTP (Φ P = 25.6%, τ = 6.3 ms) from NI, is obtained in Br-based OIHPs in powder. Cl-based OIHPs exhibit fluorescence/phosphorescence dual emission in thin films, and yellow afterglow phosphorescence in powders (Φ P = 56.1%, τ = 35 ms). The unique performance of the OIHPs with RTP can make them widely applicable in the field of information technology as security ink, and white and afterglow LEDs as single luminescent materials.

Abstract
Thallium (Tl) is an extremely toxic heavy metal and exists in very low concentrations in the environment, but its sensing is largely underexplored as compared to its neighboring elements in the periodic table (especially mercury and lead). In this work, we developed a ratiometric phosphorescent nanoprobe for thallium detection based on Mn-doped ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) and water-soluble carbon dots (C-dots). Upon excitation with 360 nm, Mn-doped ZnSe QDs and C-dots can emit long-lived and spectrally resolved phosphorescence at 580 and 440 nm, respectively. In the presence of thallium, the phosphorescence emission from Mn-doped ZnSe QDs could be selectively quenched, while that from C-dots retained unchanged. Therefore, a ratiometric phosphorescent probe was thus developed, which can eliminate the potential influence from both background fluorescence and other analyte-independent external environment factors. Several other heavy metal ions caused interferences to thallium detection but could be efficiently masked with EDTA. The proposed method offered a detection limit of 1 μg/L, which is among the most sensitive probes ever reported. Successful application of this method for thallium detection in biological serum as well as in environmental water and soil samples was demonstrated.

Abstract
Pure organic materials exhibiting room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) have significant fundamental importance and promising optoelectronic and biological applications. Exploration of metal- and heavy atom-free pure organic phosphors, however, remains challenging because achieving emissive triplet relaxation that outcompetes the vibrational loss is difficult without metal or heavy atoms. In this contribution, in contrast to aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) normally observed in conventional chromophores, a unique phenomenon of crystallization-induced dual emission (CIDE), namely, simultaneously boosted fluorescence and phosphorescence upon crystallization, is observed in a group of pure organic aromatic acids and esters at ambient conditions. Moreover, two triplet-involved relaxations of delayed fluorescence (DF) and phosphorescence are activated. Such efficient intrinsic emission from both singlet and triplet states in a single compound without employing metal or heavy atoms is suitable for a variety of fundamental research and applications.

Abstract
A novel luminescent cyclometalated iridium(III) complex-based chemosensor (1) bearing a zinc-specific receptor, tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine, and the 3-phenyl-1H-pyrazole ligand has been designed and synthesized. Upon the addition of Zn(2+) ions to a solution of iridium(III) complex 1, a pronounced luminescence color change from blue to green can be observed, which may be attributed to the suppression of photoinduced electron transfer upon complexation of complex 1 with Zn(2+) ions. The interaction of iridium(III) complex 1 with Zn(2+) ions was investigated by UV-vis absorption titration, emission titration, and (1)H NMR titration. Furthermore, the iridium(III) complex 1 exhibited good selectivity for Zn(2+) over 13 other common metal ions, including K(+), Ag(+), Na(+), Ni(2+), Fe(3+), Hg(2+), Cd(2+), Mg(2+), Ca(2+), Cu(2+), Mn(2+), Co(2+), and Pb(2+) ions. The practical application of the iridium(III) complex 1 in visualizing intracellular Zn(2+) distribution in live zebrafish was also demonstrated.

Abstract
A selective phosphorescent biothiols probe is synthesized based on Ir(III) complex 1, which has 2,2'-biquinoline as the N^N ligand for realizing the satisfied two-photon absorption cross-section and two-functionalized 2-phenylpyridine ligands with an α,β-unsaturated ketone moiety as the thiol reaction site. The one- and two-photon optical properties of 1 are investigated through UV-vis absorption spectrum and photoluminescence spectrum. This Ir(III) complex can act as an excellent one- and two-photon excited "OFF-ON" phosphorescent probe for biothiols based on the 1,4-addition of biothiol to α,β-unsaturated ketones. Moreover, one- and two-photon-induced luminescent imagings of biothiols in living cells are also realized. Furthermore, the experiments of time-resolved photoluminescence technique and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy demonstrate that 1 is able to detect biothiols in the presence of strong background fluorescence. In addition, probe 1 is adsorbed into the shell of mesoporous silica nanoparticles with core-shell structure to form a nanoprobe, which can realize the ratiometric detection of biothiols in absolute water solution and living cells based on two phosphorescent signals.

Abstract
Iron is an essential metal for living organisms, but misregulation of its homeostasis at the cellular level can trigger detrimental oxidative and/or nitrosative stress and damage events. Motivated to help study the physiological and pathological consequences of biological iron regulation, we now report a reaction-based strategy for monitoring labile Fe(2+) pools in aqueous solution and living cells. Iron Probe 1 (IP1) exploits a bioinspired, iron-mediated oxidative C-O bond cleavage reaction to achieve a selective turn-on response to Fe(2+) over a range of cellular metal ions in their bioavailable forms. We show that this first-generation chemical tool for fluorescence Fe(2+) detection can visualize changes in exchangeable iron stores in living cells upon iron supplementation or depletion, including labile iron pools at endogenous, basal levels. Moreover, IP1 can be used to identify reversible expansion of labile iron pools by stimulation with vitamin C or the iron regulatory hormone hepcidin, providing a starting point for further investigations of iron signaling and stress events in living systems as well as future probe development.
