Supramolecular ionogels enable highly efficient electrochromism

Ionogels are a promising solution to improve the functionality of electrochromic devices (ECDs) by solving issues related to traditional liquid electrolytes, such as volatility, toxicity, and leakage. However, manufacturing ionogels is complicated as it often involves cross-linking polymerization or chemical sol-gel processes, requiring large amounts of inorganic or polymeric gelators. This results in low ionic conductivity and poor ECD performance. This study demonstrates the fabrication of highly conductive supramolecular ionogels by directly solidifying an ionic liquid (IL) using a low-molecular-weight gelator with a very low content (5 wt%). The resulting ionogel, DBS-G, exhibited self-healing properties, high optical transmittance (>86%), and high ionic conductivity (3.12 mS cm-1) comparable to the pure IL. When combined with a conjugated thiophene-based electrochromic polymer or by incorporating electrochromic viologen derivatives and ferrocene into the ionogel, the constructed five-or three-layer ECDs demonstrate electrochromic performance comparable to IL electrolyte and surpassing polymer gelator-based ionogels. They exhibit high optical contrast, rapid response, high coloring efficiency, good cycle stability, and can operate effectively in a broad temperature range from -25 °C to 80 °C. Furthermore, the adhesive properties of DBS-G facilitate the fabrication of flexible ECDs, which exhibit commendable electrochromic performance and cycle stability under bending conditions.

A crown ether embedded responsive π-gelator for transition from a one-component gel to a two-component gel

A novel fluorescent π-gelator, incorporating a crown ether with host-guest recognition capability and a photoactive cyanostilbene unit, was designed. This unique structure enables the successful transition from a one-component gel to a two-component gel and exhibits gel-sol transition behaviors under heat, ions, and light stimuli.

BP23C7: high-yield synthesis and application in constructing [3]rotaxanes and responsive pseudo[2]rotaxanes

A biphenyl-23-crown-7 ether (BP23C7) is synthesized in 86% yield from commercially available starting materials. BP23C7 forms pseudo[2]rotaxane with a dibenzylammonium ion (DBA+), exhibiting a good association constant value (ka = 1 × 103 M-1). Subsequently, fluorophoric properties of BP23C7 and anthracene terminated axles are blended to create responsive pseudo[2]rotaxanes. The "turn-on" fluorescence response of BP23C7 due to the addition of fluoride and chloride anions to pseudo[2]rotaxane systems has been investigated. Concomitant fluorescence quenching of the anthracene moiety of corresponding axles due to ion-pair formation has been addressed. Furthermore, two variants of [23]crown ethers, i.e. BP23C7 and o-xylene-23-crown-7 ether (X23C7), are applied for constructing homo[3]rotaxane architectures. A half-axle comprising of DBA+ moiety and a terminal olefin is mixed separately with two [23]crown ethers and subjected to self-metathesis using Grubbs' first-generation catalyst.

Solution-based Supramolecular Hierarchical Assembly of Frenkel Excitonic Nanotubes Driven by Gold Nanoparticle Formation and Temperature

Translating nature's successful design principle of solution-based supramolecular self-assembling to broad applications─ranging from renewable energy and information technology to nanomedicine─requires a fundamental understanding of supramolecular hierarchical assembly. Though the forces behind self-assembly (e.g., hydrophobicity) are known, the specific mechanism by which monomers form the hierarchical assembly still remains an open question. A crucial step toward formulating a complete mechanism is understanding not only how the monomer's specific molecular structure but also how manifold environmental conditions impact the self-assembling process. Here, we elucidate the complex correlation between the environmental self-assembling conditions and the resulting structural properties by utilizing a well-characterized model system: well-defined supramolecular Frenkel excitonic nanotubes (NTs), self-assembled from cyanine dye molecules in aqueous solution, which further self-assemble into bundled nanotubes (b-NTs). The NTs and b-NTs inhabit distinct spectroscopic signatures, which allows the use of steady-state absorption spectroscopy to monitor the transition from NTs to b-NTs directly. Specifically, we investigate the impact of temperature (ranging from 23 °C, 55 °C, 70 °C, 85 °C, up to 100 °C) during in situ formation of gold nanoparticles to determine their role in the formation of b-NTs. The considered time regime for the self-assembling process ranges from 1 min to 8 days. With our work, we contribute to a basic understanding of how environmental conditions impact solution-based hierarchical supramolecular self-assembly in both the thermodynamic and the kinetic regime.

a-PET and Weakened Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Self-Quenching Effects in Benzo-21-Crown-7-Functionalized Diiodo-BODIPY

Weakening the triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) self-quenching effect induced by sensitizers remains a tremendous challenge due to the very few investigations carried out on them. Herein, benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7)-functionalized 2,6-diiodo-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-phenyl-4,4-difluoroboradiazaindacene (DIBDP) was synthesized to investigate the influences of huge bulks and electron-rich cavities of B21C7 moieties on the fluorescence emission and triplet-state lifetimes of DIBDP moieties. Density functional theory (DFT)/time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) computable results preliminarily predicted that B21C7 moieties had influences on the fluorescence emissions of DIBDP moieties but not on their localization of triplet states of B21C7-functionalized DIBDP (B21C7-DIBDP). The UV-vis absorption spectra, fluorescence emission spectra, and cyclic voltammograms verified that there was an electron-transfer process from the B21C7 moiety to the DIBDP moiety in B21C7-DIBDP. However, the calculated results of ΔG _CS and E _CS values and nanosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectra demonstrated that the electron-transfer process from the B21C7 moiety to the DIBDP moiety in B21C7-DIBDP had direct influences on the fluorescence emission of DIBDP moieties but not on the triplet states of DIBDP moieties. The experimental values of triplet-state lifetimes of B21C7-DIBDP were obviously longer than those of DIBDP at a high concentration (1.0 × 10^-5 M); however, the fitted values of intrinsic triplet-state lifetimes of B21C7-DIBDP were slightly greater than those of DIBDP in the same solvent. These results demonstrated that the steric hindrance of B21C7 moieties could weaken the TTA self-quenching effect of DIBDP moieties at a high concentration and the a-PET effect induced a proportion of the produced singlet states of DIBDP moieties and could not emit fluorescence in the form of radiation transition but they could be transformed into triplet states through intersystem crossing (ISC) processes due to the iodine atoms in the DIBDP moiety. The stronger a-PET effects in polar solvents induced smaller fluorescence quantum yields so that more singlet states of DIBDP moieties were transformed into triplet states to weaken the TTA self-quenching effects.

Recyclable Supramolecular Assembly-Induced Emission System for Selective Detection and Efficient Removal of Mercury(II)

An efficient strategy for simultaneously detecting and removing Hg²⁺ from water is vital to address mercury pollution. Herein a supramolecular assembly G⊂H with photoluminescent properties is facilely constructed through the self-assembly of a functional pillar[5]arene bearing two N,N-dimethyldithiocarbamoyl binding sites (H) and an AIE-active tetraphenylethene derivative (G). Remarkably, the fluorescence of G⊂H can be exclusively quenched by Hg²⁺ among the 30 cations due to the formation of non-luminous ground state complex and only L-cysteine can restore fluorescence in the common 20 amino acids. Meanwhile, the probe G⊂H has a considerable thermal and pH stability, a good anti-interference property from various cations, and a satisfactory sensitivity. More importantly, G⊂H exhibits a prominent capability of Hg²⁺ removal with rapid capture rate (within 1 h) and excellent adsorption efficiency (98 %), as well as a highly efficient recyclability without losing any adsorption activity.

Stimuli-Responsive AIEgens

The unique advantages and the exciting application prospects of AIEgens have triggered booming developments in this area in recent years. Among them, stimuli-responsive AIEgens have received particular attention and impressive progress, and they have been demonstrated to show tremendous potential in many fields from physical chemistry to materials science and to biology and medicine. Here, the recent achievements of stimuli-responsive AIEgens in terms of seven most representative types of stimuli including force, light, polarity, temperature, electricity, ion, and pH, are summarized. Based on typical examples, it is illustrated how each type of systems realize the desired stimuli-responsive performance for various applications. The key work principles behind them are ultimately deciphered and figured out to offer new insights and guidelines for the design and engineering of the next-generation stimuli-responsive luminescent materials for more broad applications.

Rapid and High-Yield Synthesis of [23]Crown Ether: Applied as a Wheel Component in the Formation of Pseudo[2]rotaxane and Synthesis of [2]Catenane with a Dibenzylammonium Dumbbell

A facile, rapid, and high yield synthesis of [23]crown ether (X23C7) has been developed from commercially available starting materials, in one step with good to excellent yield. The reaction is completed in 6 h under room temperature conditions, with the highest yield being 81%. The X23C7 macrocycle formed pseudo[2]rotaxane with a dibenzylammonium ion (DBA⁺) dumbbell, exhibiting strong association (K_a = 2.61 × 10³ M^-1). Consequently, a [2]catenane was synthesized from a DBA⁺-based diolefin terminated salt and X23C7 in 81% yield, using a threading-followed-ring-closing-metathesis approach.

Novel self-healing and multi-stimuli-responsive supramolecular gel based on d-sorbitol diacetal for multifunctional applications

A simple-structured super gelator with self-healability and multi-stimuli responses was reported herein, which exhibited multiple visual molecular recognition abilities. Multifunctional applications such as effective lubricants, safe fuels, high-efficient propellants, dyes adsorbents, enhanced fluorescence emission and separation of aldehydes from aqueous solutions are integrated into a single organogelator, which was rarely reported.

Precision Molecular Threading/Dethreading

The general principles guiding the design of molecular machines based on interlocked structures are well known. Nonetheless, the identification of suitable molecular components for a precise tuning of the energetic parameters that determine the mechanical link is still challenging. Indeed, what are the reasons of the "all-or-nothing" effect, which turns a molecular "speed-bump" into a stopper in pseudorotaxane-based architectures? Here we investigate the threading and dethreading processes for a representative class of molecular components, based on symmetric dibenzylammonium axles and dibenzo[24]crown-8 ether, with a joint experimental-computational strategy. From the analysis of quantitative data and an atomistic insight, we derive simple rules correlating the kinetic behaviour with the substitution pattern, and provide rational guidelines for the design of modules to be integrated in molecular switches and motors with sophisticated dynamic features.

Fluorescent Supramolecular Polymers Formed by Crown Ether-Based Host-Guest Interaction

Inspired by the vast array of assemblies present in nature, supramolecular chemistry has attracted significant attention on account of its diverse supra-structures, which include micelles, vesicles, and fibers, in addition to its extensive applications in luminescent materials, sensors, bioimaging, and drug delivery over the past decades. Supramolecular polymers, which represent a combination of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science, are constructed by non-covalent interactions, such as host-guest interactions, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic or hydrophilic interactions, metal-ligand interactions, π-π stacking, and electrostatic interactions. To date, numerous host-guest recognition systems have been reported, including crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, cucurbituril, pillararenes, and other macrocyclic hosts. Among them, crown ethers, as the first generation of macrocyclic hosts, provide a promising and facile alternative route to supramolecular polymers. In addition, the incorporation of fluorophores into supramolecular polymers could endow them with multiple properties and functions, thereby presenting potential advantages in the context of smart materials. Thus, this review focuses on the fabrication strategies, interesting properties, and potential applications of fluorescent supramolecular polymers based on crown ethers. Typical examples are presented and discussed in terms of three different types of building blocks, namely covalently bonded low-molecular-weight compounds, polymers modified by hosts or guests, and supramolecular coordination complexes.

In situ formation of low molecular weight organogelators for slick solidification

We have investigated the in situ formation of Low Molecular Weight Organogelator (LMWO) molecules in oil-on-water slicks through dual reactive precursor injection. This method alleviates the need for any carrier solvent or prior heating, therefore reducing the environmental impact of LMWOs, giving instantaneous gelation, even at low temperatures (−5 °C). We show minimal leaching from our gels into the water layer.

Switchable Polymer Materials Controlled by Rotaxane Macromolecular Switches

The synthesis and dynamic nature of macromolecular systems controlled by rotaxane macromolecular switches are introduced to discuss the significance of rotaxane linking of polymer chains and its topological switching. Macromolecular switches have been synthesized from macromolecular [2]rotaxanes (M2Rs) using sec-ammonium salt/crown ether couples. The successful synthesis of M2Rs possessing a single polymer axle and one crown ether wheel, constituting a key component of the macromolecular switch, has allowed us to develop various unique applications such as the development of topology-transformable polymers. Polymer topological transformations (e.g., linear-star and linear-cyclic) are achieved using rotaxane-linked polymers and rotaxane macromolecular switches. The pronounced dynamic nature of these polymer systems is sufficiently interesting to design sophisticated stimuli-responsive molecules, polymers, and materials.

Self-assembly behaviors of perylene- and naphthalene-crown macrocycle conjugates in aqueous medium

The synthesis of conjugates of perylene diimide (PDI) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) modified with two benzo-21-crown-7 ethers (B21C7) are herein described. Their self-assembly behavior in various solvents was investigated particularly in aqueous medium, due to the recently discovered hydrophilic properties of B21C7 crown macrocycle. An unexpected fluorescence quenching phenomenon was observed in the PDI-B21C7 macrocycle conjugate in chloroform. The detailed UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of these PDI/NDI derivatives in different solvents as well as their morphologies were investigated.

Multistimuli-Responsive and Photocontrolled Supramolecular Luminescent Gels Constructed by Anthracene-Bridged Bis(dibenzo-24-crown-8) with Secondary Ammonium Salt Polymer

A novel multistimuli-responsive and photcontrolled supramolecular luminescent gel is fabricated from anthracene-bridged bis(dibenzo-24-crown-8) (1) and secondary ammonium salt-functionalized graft polymer (3). X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals that the dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) ring is located at the opposite site of 1, which will greatly hinder the mutual intermolecular π-π stacking between anthracene groups. By taking advantage of the controllable binding of 1 with 3, the unique gel-sol transition could occur under different temperatures, pH, and competitive guest bindings. Benefiting from the photo-oxygenation of anthracene, the luminescence behavior of the supramolecular gel could be switched off and on under UV light (365 nm) and heating treatment, which provides a new approach for constructing photocontrolled supramolecular luminescent gel.

Weak Links To Differentiate Weak Bonds: Size-Selective Response of π-Conjugated Macrocycle Gels to Ammonium Ions

Molecular-level host-guest interactions can drive gel-to-sol phase transitions of the bulk material. Using supramolecular gels constructed from π-conjugated aza-crown macrocycles, we have investigated the effects of guest chemical structures on the kinetics of gel disassembly. While ammonium ions bind only weakly to the individual macrocycles in solution, gel-to-sol transitions of self-assembled macrocycles occur readily under ambient conditions. This net signal amplification process was monitored conveniently by time-dependent spectroscopic studies to reveal a straightforward correlation between the response rate and shape/size of the guest species. Well-designed weak links thus respond to subtle differences in weak bonds and translate them into visually discernible macroscopic signaling events.

Supramolecular Gel Based on Crown-Ether-Appended Dynamic Covalent Macrocycles

A new type of dynamic covalent macrocycle with self-promoted supramolecular gelation behavior is developed. Under oxidative conditions, the dithiol compound containing a diamide alkyl linker with an odd number (7) of carbon chain and an appended crown ether shows a remarkable gelation ability in acetonitrile, without any template molecules. Due to the existence of crown ethers and disulfide bonds, the obtained gel shows a multiple stimuli-responsiveness behavior. The mechanical properties and reversibility of the gel are investigated. Computational modeling suggests that the peripheral chain for diamide hydrogen bonding is responsible for the gelation process.

Host–guest interaction enabled chiroptical photo-switching and enhanced circularly polarized luminescence

Self-assembly of platinum(ii) 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine complexes with solvato- and iono-chromic phenomena

Mono- and di-nuclear organoplatinum(ii) monomers with cyclometalated 6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine ligands have been successfully constructed. These systems are capable of displaying intriguing solvato- and iono-chromic phenomena by elaborately manipulating non-covalent PtPt metal-metal and π-π stacking interactions for their self-assembly processes.

Organogel-Derived Covalent-Noncovalent Hybrid Polymers as Alkali Metal-Ion Scavengers for Partial Deionization of Water

We show that crown ethers (CEs) 1-5 congeal both polar and nonpolar solvents via their self-assembly through weak noncovalent interactions (NCIs) such as CH···O and CH···π interactions. Diisopropylidene-mannitol (6) is a known gelator that self-assembles through stronger OH···O H bonding. These two gelators together also congeal nonpolar solvents via their individual self-assembly. Gelator 6 self-assembles swiftly to fibers, which act as templates and attract CE to their surface through H bonding and thereby facilitate their self-assembly through weak NCI. Polymerization of styrene gels made from CE and 6, followed by the washing off of the sacrificial gelator 6, yields robust porous polystyrene-crown ether hybrid matrices (PCH), having pore-exposed CEs. These PCHs not only were efficient in sequestering alkali metal ions from aqueous solutions but also can be recycled. This novel use of organogels for making solid sorbents for metal-ion scavenging might be of great interest.

30 s Response Time of K+ Ion-Selective Hydrogels Functionalized with 18-Crown-6 Ether Based on QCM Sensor

Potassium detection is critical in monitoring imbalances in electrolytes and physiological status. The development of rapid and robust potassium sensors is desirable in clinical chemistry and point-of-care applications. In this study, composite supramolecular hydrogels are investigated: polyethylene glycol methacrylate and acrylamide copolymer (P(PEGMA-co-AM)) are functionalized with 18-crown-6 ether by employing surface initiated polymerization. Real-time potassium ion monitoring is realized by combining these compounds with quartz crystal microbalance. The device demonstrates a rapid response time of ≈30 s and a concentration detection range from 0.5 to 7.0 × 10^-3 m. These hydrogels also exhibit high reusability and K⁺ ion selectivity relative to other cations in biofluids such as Na⁺ , NH₄⁺ , Mg²⁺ , and Ca²⁺ . These results provide a new approach for sensing alkali metal ions using P(PEGMA-co-AM) hydrogels.

Low-Molecular-Weight Supramolecular Ionogel Based on Host-Guest Interaction

Supramolecular ionogels were prepared by self-assembly of small molecules through host-guest interaction between β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and a room-temperature ionic liquid (IL) 3-(1-methyl-3-imidazolio)propanesulfonate-lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (MIPS-LiTFSI) which contains zwitterion MIPS. ¹⁹F NMR and 2D ROESY ¹H NMR have been used to prove that only TFSI^- is involved in the complexation. ¹H NMR, FT-IR, and comparative tests indicated that the electrostatic interaction between imidazole cation and TFSI^- anion and intermolecular hydrogen bonding between three compounds also contribute to the formation of supramolecular ionogel. Ionogels with different gel-sol phase transition temperatures can be obtained by adjusting the molar ratio between β-CD and MIPS-LiTFSI. In addition, the supramolecular ionogels composed of "channel type" structural β-CD have been constructed. The ionogel with high conductivity and low activation energy open a door to new fields for special applications.

In situ formation of luminescent CdSe QDs in a metallohydrogel: a strategy towards synthesis, isolation, storage and re-dispersion of the QDs

A one step, in situ, room temperature synthesis of yellow luminescent CdSe QDs was achieved in a metallohydrogel derived from a facially amphiphilic bile salt, resulting in a QD-gel hybrid. An ordered self-assembly and homogeneous distribution of the CdSe QDs in the hydrogel network was observed from optical and electron micrographs. The different excited state behavior of the CdSe QDs in the hybrid was revealed for the first time using time resolved spectroscopy. We also describe the successful isolation of the photoluminescent CdSe QDs from the gel followed by their re-dispersion in an organic solvent using suitable capping ligands.

Photocontrolled RAFT Polymerization Mediated by a Supramolecular Catalyst

A photocontrolled reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization mediated by a supramolecular photoredox catalyst is reported. Cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) was used to form a host-guest complex with Zn(II) meso-tetra(4-naphthalylmethylpyridyl) porphyrin (ZnTPOR) to prevent aggregation of ZnTPOR, which in combination with a chain transfer agent (CTA) initiated efficient and controlled RAFT polymerization in water under visible light. RAFT polymerization was significantly affected by the subtle interplay of host-guest, electrostatic, and steric interactions among CB[7], ZnTPOR, and CTA. Polymerization rate was remarkably improved using CB[7]@ZnTPOR in comparison with that using ZnTPOR. The use of supramolecular interactions to modulate photocontrolled RAFT polymerization provides new opportunities to manipulate controlled radical polymerizations.
