Molecular Order in Buried Layers of TbPc2 Single-Molecule Magnets Detected by Torque Magnetometry

Temperature Induced Reversible Switching of the Magnetic Anisotropy in a Neodymium Complex Adsorbed on Graphite

Controlling the magnetic anisotropy of molecular layers assembled on a surface is one of the challenges that needs to be addressed to create the next-generation spintronic devices. Recently, metal complexes that show a reversible solid-state switch of their magnetic anisotropy in response to physical stimuli, such as temperature and magnetic field, have been discovered. The complex Nd(trensal) (H3trensal = 2,2',2''-tris(salicylideneimino)triethylamine) is predicted to exhibit such property. An ultra-thin film of Nd(trensal) is deposited on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite as a proof-of-concept system to show that this property can be retained at the nanoscale on a layered material. By combining single crystal magnetometric measurements and synchrotron X-ray-based absorption techniques, supported by multiplet ligand field simulations based on the trigonal crystal field surrounding the lanthanide centre, it is demonstrated that changing the temperature reverses the magnetic anisotropy of an ordered film of Nd(trensal), thus opening significant perspectives for the realization of a novel family of temperature-controlled molecular spintronic devices.

Orienting dilute thin films of non-planar spin-1/2 vanadyl-phthalocyanine complexes

The molecular orientation as well as the electronic and magnetic properties of vanadyl-phthalocyanine (VOPc) diluted into titanyl-phthalocyanine (TiOPc) thin films on Si(100) and polycrystalline aluminum substrates have been investigated by soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray linear dichroism (XLD) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). On the bare substrates the films grow with a standing-up geometry. By contrast, on template layers of 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA), they assume a lying-down orientation. Moreover, a theoretical model based on the normalized intensity of the nitrogen K-edge XLD is established in order to extract the molecular orientation angle quantitatively without the need for crystallinity and with the sub-monolayer sensitivity of soft-XAS. XMCD reveals that the vanadium magnetic properties are preserved in both non-diluted and diluted films. The results pave the way toward the use of VOPc as nanometer-sized spin quantum bits.

3d/4f Sandwich Complex Based on Metallacrowns

A novel lanthanide double-decker complex with nickel metallacrowns (MCs) as coordinating ligands has been synthesized. In the 3d/4f metallacrown complex Tb^III[12-MC_Ni^IIN(shi)-4]₂, the central lanthanide ion is sandwiched between two [12-MC-4] units, forming an almost ideal square-antiprismatic coordination sphere. The resulting zenithal angles at the central lanthanide ion are smaller than those for previously reported sandwich compounds. Magnetic measurements reveal an energy barrier of 346 K under zero field and up to 585 K under 3200 Oe, the highest reported for metallacrowns with D_4d symmetry.

Magnetic Anisotropy Trends along a Full 4f-Series: The fn+7 Effect

The combined experimental and computational study of the 13 magnetic complexes belonging to the Na[LnDOTA(H₂O)] (H₄DOTA = tetraazacyclododecane-N,N',N″,N‴-tetraacetic acid and Ln = Ce-Yb) family allowed us to identify a new trend: the orientation of the magnetic anisotropy tensors of derivatives differing by seven f electrons practically coincide. We name this trend the fⁿ⁺⁷ effect. Experiments and theory fully agree on the match between the magnetic reference frames (e.g., the easy, intermediate, and hard direction). The shape of the magnetic anisotropy of some couples of ions differing by seven f electrons might seem instead different at first look, but our analysis explains a hidden similarity. We thus pave the way toward a reliable predictivity of the magnetic anisotropy of lanthanide complexes with a consequent reduced need of computational and synthetical efforts. We also offer a way to gain information on ions with a relatively small total angular momentum (i.e., Sm³⁺ and Eu³⁺) and on the radioactive Pm³⁺, which are difficult to investigate experimentally.

The Multiple Faces, and Phases, of Magnetic Anisotropy

The notion of magnetic anisotropy is very central to the field of molecule-based magnetism, where it is considered to be a key quantity that must be rationalized and controlled in order to improve the performances of, e.g., single-molecule magnets. A rough classification of the magnetic properties is widely done in terms of the qualitative descriptors of magnetic anisotropy: "easy-axis" and "easy-plane". They can be based on different physical properties, in casu: free energy, magnetization, or magnetic susceptibility. However, this degree of freedom leads in some cases, including very simple ones like [V(H₂O)₆]³⁺, to incommensurate descriptions of a system being simultaneously easy-axis and easy-plane, depending only on the choice of the physical quantity on which the descriptor is based. Moreover, it has recently been pointed out that the magnetic anisotropy of a chemical system can be addressed and switched using external stimuli like temperature and magnetic field. These external parameters are, though, not the only ones capable of triggering anisotropy switching for actual chemical systems under experimentally relevant conditions. Indeed, this applies also to pressure, as discussed here. In this paper, we try to illustrate the multifaceted nature of magnetic anisotropy and assist the overview using anisotropy phase diagrams.

Descriptors of magnetic anisotropy revisited

The recently discovered thermal elasticity of magnetic anisotropy is not at all an exotic phenomenon. For many lanthanide complexes the qualitative nature of their magnetic anisotropy changes as a function of temperature and magnetic field; for some, even multiple times. The theoretically predicted existence of such multi-switch compounds is experimentally corroborated.

On-surface structural and electronic properties of spontaneously formed Tb2Pc3 single molecule magnets

The single molecule magnet (SMM) bis(phthalocyaninato)terbium(iii) (TbPc2) has received significant and increasing attention as an exemplar system for realizing molecule-based spin electronics. Attaining higher nuclearity via multi-decker TbPc systems has remained an outstanding challenge, as known examples of Tb2Pc3 systems are only those containing Pc rings with substituents (e.g. alkyl, alkoxyl). Here we report on the spontaneous formation of Tb2Pc3 species from TbPc2 precursors via sublimation in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) onto an Ag(111) surface. The presence of Tb2Pc3 molecules on the surface are inspected using scanning probe microscopy with submolecular resolution supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and additional chemical analysis. We observe the selective presence of a Kondo resonance (30 K) in the Tb2Pc3 species, that we attribute to differences in the orientation of the internal molecular ligands. Formation of triple-decker complexes offers new possibilities to study and control magnetic interactions not accessible with standard TbPc2 molecules.

Magnetic bistability of a TbPc2 submonolayer on a graphene/SiC(0001) conductive electrode

The alteration of the properties of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) due to the interaction with metallic electrodes is detrimental to their employment in spintronic devices. Conversely, herein we show that the terbium(iii) bis-phthalocyaninato complex, TbPc₂, maintains its SMM behavior up to 9 K on a graphene/SiC(0001) substrate, making this alternative conductive layer highly promising for molecular spintronic applications.

Self-Assembly of TbPc2 Single-Molecule Magnets on Surface through Multiple Hydrogen Bonding

The complexation between 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) and 2,7-diamido-1,8-naphthyridine (NaPy) is used to promote the mild chemisorption of a UPy-functionalized terbium(III) double decker system on a silicon surface. The adopted strategy allows the single-molecule magnet behavior of the system to be maintained unaltered on the surface.

Low-Temperature Magnetic Force Microscopy on Single Molecule Magnet-Based Microarrays

The magnetic properties of some single molecule magnets (SMM) on surfaces can be strongly modified by the molecular packing in nanometric films/aggregates or by interactions with the substrate, which affect the molecular orientation and geometry. Detailed investigations of the magnetism of thin SMM films and nanostructures are necessary for the development of spin-based molecular devices, however this task is challenged by the limited sensitivity of laboratory-based magnetometric techniques and often requires access to synchrotron light sources to perform surface sensitive X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) investigations. Here we show that low-temperature magnetic force microscopy is an alternative powerful laboratory tool able to extract the field dependence of the magnetization and to identify areas of in-plane and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in microarrays of the SMM terbium(III) bis-phthalocyaninato (TbPc₂) neutral complex grown as nanosized films on SiO₂ and perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA), and this is in agreement with data extracted from nonlocal XMCD measurements performed on homogeneous TbPc₂/PTCDA films.
