Composition Engineering of Amorphous Nickel Boride Nanoarchitectures Enabling Highly Efficient Electrosynthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide

Matrix-type bismuth-modulated copper-sulfur electrode using local photothermal effect strategy for efficient seawater splitting

Constructing catalytic electrodes with green economy, stability, and high efficiency is crucial for achieving overall economic water splitting. Herein, a matrix-type bismuth-modulated nickel-boron electrodes loaded on sulfurized copper foils (Bi-NiBx@CFS) is synthesized via in situ mild electroless plating. This electrode features a 2-dimensional (2D) matrix-type nanosheet structure with uniform, large pores, providing more active sites and ensuring a high gas transmission rate. Notably, the crystalline-amorphous structure constituted by the photothermal materials Bi and NiBx is loaded onto sulfide-based heterostructures. This enhances the catalytic activity through the "local photothermal effect" strategy. A performance enhancement of approximately 10 % is achieved for the Bi-NiBx@CFS at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 using this strategy at 298 K. This enhancement is equivalent to increasing the temperature of conventional electrolyte solutions by 321 K. In addition, the overpotential required to catalytically drive seawater splitting at the same current density is only 1.486 V. The Bi-NiBx@CFS electrode operates stably for 200 h without any performance degradation at industrial-grade current densities. The Bi-NiBx@CFS electrode under the "localized photothermal effect" strategy is expected to be a new type of electrocatalyst for overall seawater splitting.

Second-Shell N Dopants Regulate Acidic O2 Reduction Pathways on Isolated Pt Sites

Pt is a well-known benchmark catalyst in the acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) that drives electrochemical O2-to-H2O conversion with maximum chemical energy-to-electricity efficiency. Once dispersing bulk Pt into isolated single atoms, however, the preferential ORR pathway remains a long-standing controversy due to their complex local coordination environment and diverse site density over substrates. Herein, using a set of carbon nanotube supported Pt-N-C single-atom catalysts, we demonstrate how the neighboring N dopants regulate the electronic structure of the Pt central atom and thus steer the ORR selectivity; that is, the O2-to-H2O2 conversion selectivity can be tailored from 10% to 85% at 0.3 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Moreover, via a comprehensive X-ray-radiated spectroscopy and shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy analysis coupled with theoretical modeling, we reveal that a dominant pyridinic- and pyrrolic-N coordination within the first shell of Pt-N-C motifs favors the 4e- ORR, whereas the introduction of a second-shell graphitic-N dopant weakens *OOH binding on neighboring Pt sites and gives rise to a dominant 2e- ORR. These findings underscore the importance of the chemical environment effect for steering the electrochemical performance of single-atom catalysts.

Understanding Advanced Transition Metal-Based Two Electron Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts from the Perspective of Phase Engineering

Non-noble transition metal (TM)-based compounds have recently become a focal point of extensive research interest as electrocatalysts for the two electron oxygen reduction (2e- ORR) process. To efficiently drive this reaction, these TM-based electrocatalysts must bear unique physiochemical properties, which are strongly dependent on their phase structures. Consequently, adopting engineering strategies toward the phase structure has emerged as a cutting-edge scientific pursuit, crucial for achieving high activity, selectivity, and stability in the electrocatalytic process. This comprehensive review addresses the intricate field of phase engineering applied to non-noble TM-based compounds for 2e- ORR. First, the connotation of phase engineering and fundamental concepts related to oxygen reduction kinetics and thermodynamics are succinctly elucidated. Subsequently, the focus shifts to a detailed discussion of various phase engineering approaches, including elemental doping, defect creation, heterostructure construction, coordination tuning, crystalline design, and polymorphic transformation to boost or revive the 2e- ORR performance (selectivity, activity, and stability) of TM-based catalysts, accompanied by an insightful exploration of the phase-performance correlation. Finally, the review proposes fresh perspectives on the current challenges and opportunities in this burgeoning field, together with several critical research directions for the future development of non-noble TM-based electrocatalysts.

Ni clusters immobilized on oxygen-rich siloxene nanosheets for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen reduction toward H2O2 synthesis

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) electrosynthesis via the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e- ORR) represents a green alternative to the energy-intensive anthraquinone process. However, the practical application of this method is limited by the lack of cost-effective and high-performance electrocatalysts. Reported here is a hybrid catalyst composed of nickel (Ni) clusters immobilized onto the surface of two-dimensional siloxene nanosheets (Ni/siloxene), which exhibits excellent efficiency and selectivity in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction to H2O2 in an alkaline medium, demonstrating a standard 2e- pathway with >95% H2O2 selectivity across a wide potential range. Experimental results disclose that the high performance of Ni/siloxene can be traced to a synergy of the Ni clusters and the oxygen-rich surface of siloxene. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal a weakened interaction between Ni/siloxene and *OOH and the consequently reduced energy barrier for the *OOH protonation toward H2O2 desorption, thus leading to a high 2e- ORR reactivity and selectivity. This work provides a valuable and practical guidance for designing high-performance 2e- ORR electrocatalysts based on the rational engineering of the metal-support interaction.

Tuning the selectivity of the CO2 hydrogenation reaction using boron-doped cobalt-based catalysts

Direct CO2 hydrogenation to value-added chemicals is a promising path toward realizing the "carbon-neutral" goal. However, controlling the selectivity of CO2 hydrogenation toward desired products (e.g., CO and CH4) using non-precious metal-based catalysts is important but challenging. It is imperative to explore catalysts with high activity and stability. Herein, boron-doped cobalt nanoparticles supported on H-ZSM-5 were devised for CO2 hydrogenation to produce CO in a gas-solid flow system. Our results demonstrate that boron doping not only increases the CO2 adsorption capability of the catalyst but also optimizes the electronic state of Co for CO desorption during hydrogenation process. As a result, the boron-doped cobalt catalysts displayed an enhanced CO selectivity of 94.5% and a CO2 conversion rate of 45.6%, which is much higher than that of Co-ZSM-5 without boron doping. This study shows that the strategic design of metal borides is important for controlling the selectivity of desired products in the CO2 hydrogenation reaction.

Precise Design and Modification Engineering of Single-Atom Catalytic Materials for Oxygen Reduction

Due to their unique electronic and structural properties, single-atom catalytic materials (SACMs) hold great promise for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Coordinating environmental and engineering strategies is the key to improving the ORR performance of SACMs. This review summarizes the latest research progress and breakthroughs of SACMs in the field of ORR catalysis. First, the research progress on the catalytic mechanism of SACMs acting on ORR is reviewed, including the latest research results on the origin of SACMs activity and the analysis of pre-adsorption mechanism. The study of the pre-adsorption mechanism is an important breakthrough direction to explore the origin of the high activity of SACMs and the practical and theoretical understanding of the catalytic process. Precise coordination environment modification, including in-plane, axial, and adjacent site modifications, can enhance the intrinsic catalytic activity of SACMs and promote the ORR process. Additionally, several engineering strategies are discussed, including multiple SACMs, high loading, and atomic site confinement. Multiple SACMs synergistically enhance catalytic activity and selectivity, while high loading can provide more active sites for catalytic reactions. Overall, this review provides important insights into the design of advanced catalysts for ORR.

Synthesis of Ni3 B/Ni via Vacuum-Induced for Ultrahigh Stable and Efficient Methanol Oxidation

Designing efficient catalysts to promote the electrochemical oxidation of anodes is the core of the development of electrochemical synthesis technologies, such as HER and CO2 RR. Here, a novel vacuum induction strategy is used to synthesize nickel boride/nickel (Ni3 B/Ni) heterostructure catalyst for electrochemical oxidation of methanol into formic acid. The catalyst has extremely high reactivity (only 146.9 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 , the maximum current density reaches 555.70 mA mg-1 and 443.87 mA cm-2 ), ultra-high selectivity (Faraday efficiency of methanol conversion to formic acid is close to 100%), and ultra-long life (over 50 h at 100 mA cm-2 ). In-suit electrochemical impedance spectroscopy proved that MeOH is oxidized first and inhibits the phase transition of the electrocatalyst to the high-valent electrooxidation products, which not only enables the high selectivity of MeOH oxidation but also ensures high stability of the catalyst. The mechanism studies by density functional theory calculations show that the potential determining step, the formation of *CH2 O, occurs most favorably in the Ni3 B/Ni heterostructure. These results provide references for the development of MeOH oxidation catalysts with high activity, high stability, high selectivity, and low cost.

Recent Progress on Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials

As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e., the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.

Energy-saving and product-oriented hydrogen peroxide electrosynthesis enabled by electrochemistry pairing and product engineering

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) electrosynthesis through oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is drawing worldwide attention, whereas suffering seriously from the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the difficult extraction of thermodynamically unstable H2O2. Herein, we present an electrosynthesis protocol involving coupling ORR-to-H2O2 with waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) upcycling and the first H2O2 conversion strategy. Ni-Mn bimetal- and onion carbon-based catalysts are designed to catalyze ORR-to-H2O2 and ethylene glycol electrooxidation with the Faradaic efficiency of 97.5% (H2O2) and 93.0% (formate). This electrolysis system runs successfully at only 0.927 V to achieve an industrial-scale current density of 400 mA cm-2, surpassing all reported H2O2 electrosynthesis systems. H2O2 product is upgraded through two downstream routes of converting H2O2 into sodium perborate and dibenzoyl peroxide. Techno-economic evolution highlights the high gross profit of the ORR || PET upcycling protocol over HER || PET upcycling and ORR || OER. This work provides an energy-saving methodology for the electrosynthesis of H2O2 and other chemicals.

Immobilization of Oxyanions on the Reconstructed Heterostructure Evolved from a Bimetallic Oxysulfide for the Promotion of Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) requires the electrocatalyst to bear abundant active sites, optimized electronic structure as well as robust component and mechanical stability. Herein, a bimetallic lanthanum-nickel oxysulfide with rich oxygen vacancies based on the La2O2S prototype is fabricated as a binder-free precatalyst for alkaline OER. The combination of advanced in situ and ex situ characterizations with theoretical calculation uncovers the synergistic effect among La, Ni, O, and S species during OER, which assures the adsorption and stabilization of the oxyanion [Formula: see text] onto the surface of the deeply reconstructed porous heterostructure composed of confining NiOOH nanodomains by La(OH)3 barrier. Such coupling, confinement, porosity and immobilization enable notable improvement in active site accessibility, phase stability, mass diffusion capability and the intrinsic Gibbs free energy of oxygen-containing intermediates. The optimized electrocatalyst delivers exceptional alkaline OER activity and durability, outperforming most of the Ni-based benchmark OER electrocatalysts.

Synergistic Regulation of Pt Clusters on Porous Support by Mo and P for Robust Bifunctional Hydrogen Electrocatalysis

Developing efficient electrocatalysts toward hydrogen oxidation and evolution reactions (HER/HOR) in alkaline electrolytes is essential for realizing renewable hydrogen technologies. Herein, we demonstrate that the introduction of dual-active species such as Mo and P (Pt/Mo,P@NC) can effectively regulate the surface electronic structure of platinum (Pt) and significantly improve the HOR/HER performance. The optimized Pt/Mo,P@NC exhibits remarkable catalytic activity, achieving a normalized exchange current density of 2.89 mA cm^-2 and a mass activity of 2.3 mA μg_Pt^-1, which are approximately 2.2 and 13.5 times higher than those of the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst, respectively. Moreover, it performs an impressive HER performance with an overpotential of 23.4 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, which is lower than most documented alkaline electrocatalysts. Experimental results reveal that the modifying effect of Mo and P optimizes the adsorption of H and OH on Pt/Mo,P@NC, resulting in an outstanding catalytic performance. This work has significant theoretical and practical significance for developing a novel and highly efficient catalyst for bifunctional hydrogen electrocatalysis.

Recent Advances of Electrocatalyst and Cell Design for Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Electrochemical synthesis of H2O2 via a selective two-electron oxygen reduction reaction has emerged as an attractive alternative to the current energy-consuming anthraquinone process. Herein, the progress on electrocatalysts for H2O2 generation, including noble metal, transition metal-based, and carbon-based materials, is summarized. At first, the design strategies employed to obtain electrocatalysts with high electroactivity and high selectivity are highlighted. Then, the critical roles of the geometry of the electrodes and the type of reactor in striking a balance to boost the H2O2 selectivity and reaction rate are systematically discussed. After that, a potential strategy to combine the complementary properties of the catalysts and the reactor for optimal selectivity and overall yield is illustrated. Finally, the remaining challenges and promising opportunities for high-efficient H2O2 electrochemical production are highlighted for future studies.

Tunable Heterogeneous FeCo Alloy-Mo0.82N Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Temperature-Adapted Zn-Air Batteries

The practical applications of temperature-tolerant Zn-air batteries (ZABs) rely on highly active and stable bifunctional catalysts that accelerate cathodic oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution (OER) reactions. Herein, we successfully integrated fascinating transition metal nitrides and FeCo alloys through a simple coordination assembly and pyrolysis process. Importantly, the alloy-to-nitride ratio in the heterogeneous catalyst can be carefully regulated through the subsequent etching process. Moreover, the composition-dependent ORR/OER performance of the FeCo-Mo_0.82N catalysts was revealed. Aqueous ZABs using the optimized FeCo-Mo_0.82N-60 as a cathode exhibit a high peak power density of 149.7 mW cm^-2 and an impressive stability of 600 h with a low charge-discharge voltage gap decay rate of 0.025 mV h^-1, which exceeds those of most of recent reports. Furthermore, the FeCo-Mo_0.82N-60-based flexible ZABs display a small specific capacity degradation (3%) from 40 to -10 °C, demonstrating excellent temperature tolerance.

Photocatalytic and Electrocatalytic Generation of Hydrogen Peroxide: Principles, Catalyst Design and Performance

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a high-demand organic chemical reagent and has been widely used in various modern industrial applications. Currently, the prominent method for the preparation of H2O2 is the anthraquinone oxidation. Unfortunately, it is not conducive to economic and sustainable development since it is a complex process and involves unfriendly environment and potential hazards. In this context, numerous approaches have been developed to synthesize H2O2. Among them, photo/electro-catalytic ones are considered as two of the most promising manners for on-site synthesis of H2O2. These alternatives are sustainable in that only water or O2 is required. Namely, water oxidation (WOR) or oxygen reduction (ORR) reactions can be further coupled with clean and sustainable energy. For photo/electro-catalytic reactions for H2O2 generation, the design of the catalysts is extremely important and has been extensively conducted with an aim to obtain ultimate catalytic performance. This article overviews the basic principles of WOR and ORR, followed by the summary of recent progresses and achievements on the design and performance of various photo/electro-catalysts for H2O2 generation. The related mechanisms for these approaches are highlighted from theoretical and experimental aspects. Scientific challenges and opportunities of engineering photo/electro-catalysts for H2O2 generation are also outlined and discussed.

Charge-Polarized Selenium Vacancy in Nickel Diselenide Enabling Efficient and Stable Electrocatalytic Conversion of Oxygen to Hydrogen Peroxide

Vacancy engineering is deemed as one of the powerful protocols to tune the catalytic activity of electrocatalysts. Herein, Se-vacancy with charge polarization is created in the NiSe₂ structure (NiSe₂ -V_Se ) via a sequential phase conversion strategy. By a combined analysis of the Rietveld method, transient photovoltage spectra (TPV), in situ Raman and density functional theory (DFT) calculation, it is unequivocally discovered that the presence of charge-polarized Se-vacancy is beneficial for stabilizing the structure, decreasing the electron transfer kinetics, as well as optimizing the free adsorption energy of reaction intermediate during two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e^- ORR). Benefiting from these merits, the as-prepared NiSe₂ -V_Se delivered the highest selectivity of 96% toward H₂ O₂ in alkaline media, together with a selectivity higher than 90% over the wide potential range from 0.25 to 0.55 V, ranking it in the top level among the previously reported transition metal-based electrocatalysts. Most notably, it also displayed admirable stability with only a slight selectivity decay after 5000 cycles of accelerated degradation test (ADT).

Sulfur Vacancy-Rich Amorphous Rh Metallene Sulfide for Electrocatalytic Selective Synthesis of Aniline Coupled with Efficient Sulfion Degradation

The construction of efficient and stable electrocatalysts is of widespread research significance for electrocatalytic coupling reactions. Herein, an amorphous Rh metallene sulfide with sulfur-rich vacancies (a-RhS_2-x metallene) is synthesized for the cathodic nitrobenzene (Ph-NO₂) electroreduction reaction (ERR) to aniline (Ph-NH₂) coupled with the anodic sulfur ion (S^2-) oxidation reaction (SOR) in a coelectrolysis system. On the one hand, the amorphous Rh metallene structure can provide enough of a reactive site. On the other hand, the amorphization and the introduced S vacancies can generate rich defects and ligand unsaturated sites to improve the intrinsic activity of the active sites. Due to these advantages, the a-RhS_2-x metallene exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance for Ph-NO₂ ERR and SOR. Inspiringly, in the assembled electrocatalytic coupling system, the required overpotential is only 0.442 V at 10 mA cm^-2 to drive the cathodic Ph-NO₂ ERR and anodic SOR, which allows for promising energy-efficient electrolysis to generate high value-added chemicals.

In Situ Coupling of Carbon Dots with Co-ZIF Nanoarrays Enabling Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are regarded as one promising class of precatalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet most of them suffer from poor conductivity and lack of coordinatively unsaturated metal sites, which hinders the fast electrochemical reconstruction and thus a poor OER activity. To address this issue, a unique heterocomposite has been constructed by in situ inserting carbon dots (CDs) into cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (Co-ZIF) nanosheet arrays (Co-ZIF/CDs/CC) in the presence of carbon cloth (CC) via one-pot coprecipitation for alkaline OER. Benefiting from the synergism between CDs and Co-ZIF subunits such as superior conductivity, strong charge interaction as well as abundant metal sites exposure, the Co-ZIF/CDs/CC exhibits an enhanced promotion effect for OER and contributes to the deep phase transformation from CDs-coupled Co-ZIF to CDs-coupled active CoOOH. As expected, the achieved Co-ZIF/CDs/CC only requires an overpotential of 226 mV to deliver 10 mA cm^-2 in 1.0 M KOH, which is lower than that of Co-ZIF/CC and superior to most previously reported CC-supported MOF precatalysts. Moreover, it can also maintain a large current density of 100 mA cm^-2 for 24 h with negligible activity decay.

Lattice Strained B-Doped Ni Nanoparticles for Efficient Electrochemical H2 O2 Synthesis

Surface strains are necessary to optimize the oxygen adsorption energy during the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the four-electron process, but the surface strains regulation for ORR in the two-electron process to produce hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) is rarely studied. Herein, it is reported that the tensile strained B-doped Ni nanoparticles on carbon support (Ni-B@BNC) could enhance the adsorption of O₂ , stabilize OO bond, and boost the electrocatalytic ORR to H₂ O₂ . Moreover, the Ni-B@BNC catalysts exhibit volcano-type activity for electrocatalytic ORR to H₂ O₂ as a function of the strain intensity, which is controlled by B content. Among them, Ni₄ -B₁ @BNC exhibits the highest H₂ O₂ selectivity of over 86%, H₂ O₂ yield of 128.5 mmol h^-1  g^-1 , and Faraday efficiency of 94.9% at 0.6 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode as well as durable stability after successive cycling, being one of the state-of-the-art electrocatalysts for two-electron ORR. The density functional theory calculations reveal that tensile strain introduced by doping B into Ni nanoparticles could decrease the state density of Ni-3d orbital and optimize the binding energy of OOH* during ORR. A new direction is provided here for the design of highly active and stable catalysts for potential H₂ O₂ production and beyond.
