Light-Induced Agglomeration of Single-Atom Platinum in Photocatalysis

Structural Evolution of GaOx-Shell and Intermetallic Phases in Ga-Pt Supported Catalytically Active Liquid Metal Solutions

We present a comprehensive scale-bridging characterization approach for supported catalytically active liquid metal solutions (SCALMS) which combines lab-based X-ray microscopy, nano X-ray computed tomography (nano-CT), and correlative analytical transmission electron microscopy. SCALMS catalysts consist of low-melting alloy particles and have demonstrated high catalytic activity, selectivity, and long-term stability in propane dehydrogenation (PDH). We established an identical-location nano-CT workflow which allows us to reveal site-specific changes of Ga-Pt SCALMS before and after PDH. These observations are complemented by analytical transmission electron microscopy investigations providing information on the structure, chemical composition, and phase distribution of individual SCALMS particles. Key findings of this combined microscopic approach include (i) structural evolution of the SCALMS particles' GaOx shell, (ii) Pt segregation toward the oxide shell leading to the formation of Ga-Pt intermetallic phases, and (iii) cracking of the oxide shell accompanied by the release of liquid Ga-Pt toward the porous support.

Ultrafine Pt Nanoparticles on Defective Tungsten Oxide for Photocatalytic Ethylene Synthesis

The selective conversion of ethane (C2H6) to ethylene (C2H4) under mild conditions is highly wanted, yet very challenging. Herein, it is demonstrated that a Pt/WO3-x catalyst, constructed by supporting ultrafine Pt nanoparticles on the surface of oxygen-deficient tungsten oxide (WO3-x) nanoplates, is efficient and reusable for photocatalytic C2H6 dehydrogenation to produce C2H4 with high selectivity. Specifically, under pure light irradiation, the optimized Pt/WO3-x photocatalyst exhibits C2H4 and H2 yield rates of 291.8 and 373.4 µmol g-1 h-1, respectively, coupled with a small formation of CO (85.2 µmol g-1 h-1) and CH4 (19.0 µmol g-1 h-1), corresponding to a high C2H4 selectivity of 84.9%. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the vacancy-rich WO3-x catalyst enables broad optical harvesting to generate charge carriers by light for working the redox reactions. Meanwhile, the Pt cocatalyst reinforces adsorption of C2H6, desorption of key reaction species, and separation and migration of light-induced charges to promote the dehydrogenation reaction with high productivity and selectivity. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation expose the key intermediates formed on the Pt/WO3-x catalyst during the reaction, which permits the construction of the possible C2H6 dehydrogenation mechanism.

Stable and Highly Active Single Atom Configurations for Photocatalytic H2 Generation

The employment of single atoms (SAs), especially Pt SAs, as co-catalysts in photocatalytic H2 generation has gained significant attention due to their exceptional efficiency. However, a major challenge in their application is the light-induced agglomeration of these SAs into less active nanosized particles under photocatalytic conditions. This study addresses the stability and reactivity of Pt SAs on TiO2 surfaces by investigating various post-deposition annealing treatments in air, Ar, and Ar-H2 environments at different temperatures. It is described that annealing in an Ar-H2 atmosphere optimally stabilizes SA configurations, forming stable 2D rafts of assembled SAs ≈0.5-1 nm in diameter. These rafts not only resist light-induced agglomeration but also exhibit significantly enhanced H2 production efficiency. The findings reveal a promising approach to maintaining the high reactivity of Pt SAs while overcoming the critical challenge of their stability under photocatalytic conditions.

Photocatalytic H2 Generation: Controlled and Optimized Dispersion of Single Atom Co-Catalysts Based on Pt-TCPP Planar Adsorption on TiO2

When using single atoms (SAs) as a co-catalyst in photocatalytic H2 generation, achieving a well-dispersed, evenly distributed and adjustable SA surface density on a semiconductor surface is a challenging task. In the present work we use the planar adsorption of tetrakis-(4-carboxyphenyl)-porphyrin (TCPP) and its platinum coordinated analogue, Pt-TCPP, onto anatase TiO2 surfaces to establish a spatially controlled decoration of SAs. We show that the surface Pt SA density can be very well controlled by co-adsorption of Pt-TCPP and TCPP in the planar monolayer regime, and by adjusting the Pt-TCPP to TCPP ratio a desired well dispersed surface density of SAs up to 2.6×105  atoms μm-2 can be established (which is the most effective Pt SA loading for photocatalysis). This distribution and the SA state are maintained after a thermal treatment in air, and an optimized SA density as well as a most active form of Pt for photocatalytic H2 evolution can be established and maintained.

Surface engineering for stable electrocatalysis

In recent decades, significant progress has been achieved in rational developments of electrocatalysts through constructing novel atomistic structures and modulating catalytic surface topography, realizing substantial enhancement in electrocatalytic activities. Numerous advanced catalysts were developed for electrochemical energy conversion, exhibiting low overpotential, high intrinsic activity, and selectivity. Yet, maintaining the high catalytic performance under working conditions with high polarization and vigorous microkinetics that induce intensive degradation of surface nanostructures presents a significant challenge for commercial applications. Recently, advanced operando and computational techniques have provided comprehensive mechanistic insights into the degradation of surficial functional structures. Additionally, various innovative strategies have been devised and proven effective in sustaining electrocatalytic activity under harsh operating conditions. This review aims to discuss the most recent understanding of the degradation microkinetics of catalysts across an entire range of anodic to cathodic polarizations, encompassing processes such as oxygen evolution and reduction, hydrogen reduction, and carbon dioxide reduction. Subsequently, innovative strategies adopted to stabilize the materials' structure and activity are highlighted with an in-depth discussion of the underlying rationale. Finally, we present conclusions and perspectives regarding future research and development. By identifying the research gaps, this review aims to inspire further exploration of surface degradation mechanisms and rational design of durable electrocatalysts, ultimately contributing to the large-scale utilization of electroconversion technologies.

Catalyzing Sustainable Water Splitting with Single Atom Catalysts: Recent Advances

Electrochemical water splitting for sustainable hydrogen and oxygen production have shown enormous potentials. However, this method needs low-cost and highly active catalysts. Traditional nano catalysts, while effective, have limits since their active sites are mostly restricted to the surface and edges, leaving interior surfaces unexposed in redox reactions. Single atom catalysts (SACs), which take advantage of high atom utilization and quantum size effects, have recently become appealing electrocatalysts. Strong interaction between active sites and support in SACs have considerably improved the catalytic efficiency and long-term stability, outperforming their nano-counterparts. This review's first section examines the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) and the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER). In the next section, SACs are categorized as noble metal, non-noble metal, and bimetallic synergistic SACs. In addition, this review emphasizes developing methodologies for effective SAC design, such as mass loading optimization, electrical structure modulation, and the critical role of support materials. Finally, Carbon-based materials and metal oxides are being explored as possible supports for SACs. Importantly, for the first time, this review opens a discussion on waste-derived supports for single atom catalysts used in electrochemical reactions, providing a cost-effective dimension to this vibrant research field. The well-known design techniques discussed here may help in development of electrocatalysts for effective water splitting.

Progress on Single-Atom Photocatalysts for H2 Generation: Material Design, Catalytic Mechanism, and Perspectives

Solar energy utilization is of great significance to current challenges of the energy crisis and environmental pollution, which benefit the development of the global community to achieve carbon neutrality goals. Hydrogen energy is also treated as a good candidate for future energy supply since its combustion not only supplies high-density energy but also shows no pollution gas. In particular, photocatalytic water splitting has attracted increasing research as a promising method for H2 production. Recently, single-atom (SA) photocatalysts have been proposed as a potential solution to improve catalytic efficiency and lower the costs of photocatalytic water splitting for H2 generation. Owing to the maximized atom utilization rate, abundant surface active sites, and tunable coordination environment, SA photocatalysts have achieved significant progress. This review reviews developments of advanced SA photocatalysts for H2 generation regarding the different support materials. The recent progress of titanium dioxide, metal-organic frameworks, two-dimensional carbon materials, and red phosphorus supported SA photocatalysts are carefully discussed. In particular, the material designs, reaction mechanisms, modulation strategies, and perspectives are highlighted for realizing improved solar-to-energy efficiency and H2 generation rate. This work will supply significant references for future design and synthesis of advanced SA photocatalysts.

Self-polarized schorl optimizing TiO2 for photocatalytic persulfate activation and organic pollutants degradation

Photocatalytic activation of persulfate has exhibited tremendous potential in water purification because of its green and environmentally friendly process. However, this process often exhibits low activation efficiencies and difficult recovery of the photocatalyst. Herein, schorl-supported nano-TiO2 composite photocatalysts (S/TiO2) were prepared by a mechanical grinding method for efficient activation of potassium monopersulfate (PMS). The anatase TiO2 nanoparticles with particle size of approximately 30 nm was uniformly loaded on the surface of schorl via forming Si-O-Ti bonds. The S/TiO2 assisted with PMS (S/TiO2-PMS) exhibited remarkable degradation performance and stability. In this system (S/TiO2-PMS), the C/C0 value of phenol solution (10 ppm) were decreased to 0.070 and 0 after 30 min and 90 min of irradiation, where the degradation extent were 93.0% and 100% respectively. The rate of phenol degradation with S/TiO2-PMS was 12.6 times that seen with TiO2-PMS. The oxidation active species were holes and SO4•- in S/TiO2-PMS system subjected to simulated sunlight. It was demonstrated that the polarization electric field of the schorl enhanced the separation efficiency of the photoinduced electrons and holes for improving the performance of the S/TiO2-PMS. On the other hand, the transformations of Fe3+ and Fe2+ on the schorl surface further promotes the activation of PMS. This work provides a new choice for designing TiO2-based photocatalytic persulfate activation system targeting the field of advanced oxidation water treatment.

Palladium Single-Atom (In)Stability Under Aqueous Reductive Conditions

Here, we investigate the stability and performance of single-atom Pd on TiO2 for the selective dechlorination of 4-chlorophenol. A challenge inherent to single atoms is their high surface free energy, which results in a tendency for the surface migration and aggregation of metal atoms. This work evaluates various factors affecting the stability of Pd single-atoms, including atomic dispersion, coordination environment, and substrate properties, under reductive aqueous conditions. The transition from single atoms to clusters vastly enhanced dechlorination kinetics without diminishing carbon-chlorine bond selectivity. X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis using both in situ and ex situ conditions followed the dynamic transformation of single atoms into amorphous clusters, which consist of a unique unsaturated coordination environment and few nanometer diameter. The intricate relationship between stability and performance underscores the vital role of detailed characterization to properly determine the true active species for dehalogenation reactions.

A study on rapid and stable catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol by 2-hydroxyethylamine stabilized Fe3O4@Pt and its kinetic factors

The successful development of efficient and stable catalysts for 4-NP reduction reactions is beneficial to the environment and ecology. Fe3O4@Pt exhibits excellent catalytic performance for 4-NP reduction reaction due to the synergistic effect between Fe and Pt. But its structure and catalytic performance are extremely unstable. Here, we utilized the small-scale organic compound 2-hydroxyethylamine as surfactant to construct a stable composite nanomaterial. Then investigated the influence of monochromatic light (650 nm, 808 nm and 980 nm) and temperature on the kinetics of 4-NP reduction reaction by 2-hydroxyethylamine stabilized Fe3O4@Pt. The results indicate that both temperature and monochromatic light radiation can affect kinetic regulation. Increasing temperature can promote the catalytic rate, while monochromatic light radiation can induce agglomeration and inhibit the catalytic rate. This study opens up a new way for developing and regulating catalysts for heterogeneous catalysis reactions.

Reactive Deposition Versus Strong Electrostatic Adsorption (SEA): A Key to Highly Active Single Atom Co-Catalysts in Photocatalytic H2 Generation

In recent years, the use of single atoms (SAs) has become of a rapidly increasing significance in photocatalytic H2 generation; here SA noble metals (mainly Pt SAs) can act as highly effective co-catalysts. The classic strategy to decorate oxide semiconductor surfaces with maximally dispersed SAs relies on "strong electrostatic adsorption" (SEA) of suitable noble metal complexes. In the case of TiO2 - the classic benchmark photocatalyst - SEA calls for adsorption of cationic Pt complexes such as [(NH3 )4 Pt]2+ which then are thermally reacted to surface-bound SAs. While SEA is widely used in literature, in the present work it is shown by a direct comparison that reactive attachment based on the reductive anchoring of SAs, e.g., from hexachloroplatinic(IV) acid (H2 PtCl6 ) leads directly to SAs in a configuration with a significantly higher specific activity than SAs deposited with SEA - and this at a significantly lower Pt loading and without any thermal post-deposition treatments. Overall, the work demonstrates that the reactive deposition strategy is superior to the classic SEA concept as it provides a direct electronically well-connected SA-anchoring and thus leads to highly active single-atom sites in photocatalysis.

Single-Atom Nano-Islands (SANIs): A Robust Atomic-Nano System for Versatile Heterogeneous Catalysis Applications

Academician Tao Zhang from China and co-workers designed the first Pt₁ /FeO_x single-atom catalysts (SACs) in 2011, and they proposed the concept of "single-atom catalysis" in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Generally, it is easy for active metal single-atom sites on a carrier to migrate and aggregate, which results in poor performance; or the chemical bond between the metal atom and carrier is too strong (immovable), which results in passivation of the active site. Recently, "nano-island" type SACs were designed, in which the active metal atoms are isolated on the "islands", and can move within the respective "island", but the migration across the "island" is blocked, to achieve a dynamic confinement design of single atoms (that is, a "moving but not aggregating" design philosophy). Herein, a new concept of "single-atom nano-islands (SANIs)" is proposed to describe these congeneric "atomic-nano" systems in heterogeneous catalysis fields. Particularly, the SANIs are divided into three categories: "one-island-one-atom", "one-island-multi-atoms", and "island-sea synergism" architectures. The scientific significance and application principles of SANIs in versatile heterogeneous catalysis fields (i.e., thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis) are summarized. The challenges and proposals of SANIs are also provided.
