Nacre-Inspired Bacterial Cellulose/Mica Nanopaper with Excellent Mechanical and Electrical Insulating Properties by Biosynthesis

Highly Thermally Conductive and Structurally Ultra-Stable Graphitic Films with Seamless Heterointerfaces for Extreme Thermal Management

Highly thermally conductive graphitic film (GF) materials have become a competitive solution for the thermal management of high-power electronic devices. However, their catastrophic structural failure under extreme alternating thermal/cold shock poses a significant challenge to reliability and safety. Here, we present the first investigation into the structural failure mechanism of GF during cyclic liquid nitrogen shocks (LNS), which reveals a bubbling process characterized by "permeation-diffusion-deformation" phenomenon. To overcome this long-standing structural weakness, a novel metal-nanoarmor strategy is proposed to construct a Cu-modified graphitic film (GF@Cu) with seamless heterointerface. This well-designed interface ensures superior structural stability for GF@Cu after hundreds of LNS cycles from 77 to 300 K. Moreover, GF@Cu maintains high thermal conductivity up to 1088 W m-1 K-1 with degradation of less than 5% even after 150 LNS cycles, superior to that of pure GF (50% degradation). Our work not only offers an opportunity to improve the robustness of graphitic films by the rational structural design but also facilitates the applications of thermally conductive carbon-based materials for future extreme thermal management in complex aerospace electronics.

Performance Research of Natural Mica Modified with Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for an Epoxy Resin Anti-Corrosion Coating

A new composite material made from mica and a metal-organic framework (MOF) has been developed to improve the anticorrosive capabilities of epoxy resin coatings. The layered mica was loaded with denser and more uniform UIO-66 nanoparticles after modifying the composite with polyethyleneimine (PEI). The composites were used as fillers to prepare epoxy coatings that exhibited long-lasting active (labyrinth effect produced by mica) and passive (pH-sensitive release of corrosion inhibitors) corrosion protection. Settling experiments showed that polyethyleneimine improved the composites' compatibility in epoxy resin. After being immersed in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 60 days, the adhesion of PMC-UIO@MBT/EP increases to 9.01 MPa, while the water absorption rate only reaches 2.57%. It indicates that the coating has good barrier properties and stability. After being soaked in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 60 days at pH = 7, PMC-UIO@MBT/EP exhibits high low-frequency impedance (8.30 × 108 Ω), as demonstrated by the electronic impedance spectrum (EIS). In addition, the coating also exhibited the highest low-frequency impedance after 30 days in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution at pH = 11.

Lignocellulose-Based Optical Biofilter with High Near-Infrared Transmittance via Lignin Capturing-Fusing Approach

Near-infrared (NIR) transparent optical filters show great promise in night vision and receiving windows. However, NIR optical filters are generally prepared by laborious, environmentally unfriendly processes that involve metal oxides or petroleum-based polymers. We propose a lignin capturing-fusing approach to manufacturing optical biofilters based on molecular collaboration between lignin and cellulose from waste agricultural biomass. In this process, lignin is captured via self-assembly in a cellulose network; then, the lignin is fused to fill gaps and hold the cellulose fibers tightly. The resulting optical biofilter featured a dense structure and smooth surface with NIR transmittance of ~90%, ultralow haze of close to 0%, strong ultraviolet-visible light blocking (~100% at 400 nm and 57.58% to 98.59% at 550 nm). Further, the optical biofilter has comprehensive stability, including water stability, solvent stability, thermal stability, and environmental stability. Because of its unique properties, the optical biofilter demonstrates potential applications in the NIR region, such as an NIR-transmitting window, NIR night vision, and privacy protection. These applications represent a promising route to produce NIR transparent optical filters starting from lignocellulose biomass waste.

Thin lamellar films with enhanced mechanical properties for durable radiative cooling

Passive daytime radiative cooling is a promising path to tackle energy, environment and security issues originated from global warming. However, the contradiction between desired high solar reflectivity and necessary applicable performance is a major limitation at this stage. Herein, we demonstrate a "Solvent exchange-Reprotonation" processing strategy to fabricate a lamellar structure integrating aramid nanofibers with core-shell TiO2-coated Mica microplatelets for enhanced strength and durability without compromising optical performance. Such approach enables a slow but complete two-step protonation transition and the formation of three-dimensional dendritic networks with strong fibrillar joints, where overloaded scatterers are stably grasped and anchored in alignment, thereby resulting in a high strength of ~112 MPa as well as excellent environmental durability including ultraviolet aging, high temperature, scratches, etc. Notably, the strong backward scattering excited by multiple core-shell and shell-air interfaces guarantees a balanced reflectivity (~92%) and thickness (~25 μm), which is further revealed by outdoor tests where attainable subambient temperature drops are ~3.35 °C for daytime and ~6.11 °C for nighttime. Consequently, both the cooling capacity and comprehensive outdoor-services performance, greatly push radiative cooling towards real-world applications.

In Situ Fermentation of an Ultra-Strong, Microplastic-Free, and Biodegradable Multilayer Bacterial Cellulose Film for Food Packaging

Cellulose-based food packaging has a significant importance in reducing plastic pollution and also ensuring our safety from microplastics. Nonetheless, lignocellulose necessitates sophisticated physical and chemical treatments to be fashioned into a satisfactory food packaging, thus leading to extra consumption and operations. Here, we present a gel-assisted biosynthesis approach for the in situ production of bacterial cellulose (BC) that can be directly applied to food packaging. Komagataeibacter sucrofermentans is homogeneously distributed in the gellan gum (GG)-assisted culture system, and the BC/GG film with an even surface is attained. Then, the BC/GG film is integrated with an antibacterial layer containing a quaternary ammonium chitosan microsphere (QM) through an in situ spray biosynthesis method. The resulting BC/GG/QM multilayer film combines the barrier properties and antibacterial activity. The method for in situ biosynthesis is green, efficient, and convenient to endow the multilayer film with excellent barrier capacity (1.76 g·mm·m-2·d-1·KPa-1 at RH 75%), high mechanical properties (strength 462 MPa), and antibacterial activity (>90% against Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Staphylococcus aureus). In terms of food preservation, the overall performance of the BC/GG/QM multilayer film is better than the commercial petroleum-based film and lignocellulose-derived film. This work proffers a novel strategy to produce a more beneficial and eco-friendly multilayer film via in situ biosynthesis, which manifests great utility in the field of food packaging.

Engineered Living Materials for Advanced Diseases Therapy

Natural living materials serving as biotherapeutics exhibit great potential for treating various diseases owing to their immunoactivity, tissue targeting, and other biological activities. In this review, the recent developments in engineered living materials, including mammalian cells, bacteria, viruses, fungi, microalgae, plants, and their active derivatives that are used for treating various diseases are summarized. Further, the future perspectives and challenges of such engineered living material-based biotherapeutics are discussed to provide considerations for future advances in biomedical applications.
