A Functional Janus Ag Nanowires/Bacterial Cellulose Separator for High-Performance Dendrite-Free Zinc Anode Under Harsh Conditions

Stable Interlayer Zinc Plating/Stripping in the Maxwell-Wagner Effect-Enhanced Interface

Zinc metal batteries have recently emerged as a promising stable and reversible anode aqueous battery. However, due to the serious dendrite problem and hydrogen evolution problem of the zinc metal anode, the practical application of the zinc metal battery is limited. Here, we propose Y2O3 as an effective coating, which inhibits hydrogen evolution and side reactions by physical isolation and simultaneously prevents dendrite growth by ensuring a uniform Zn-ion flux and fast transport channels generated by Maxwell-Wagner polarization, thus improving the stability of batteries. Meanwhile, in situ/ex situ characterizations and different simulations are conducted to investigate in detail the effect of Maxwell-Wagner polarization on the performance of Zn metal batteries. The symmetric Y2O3@Zn anode system exhibits a stable electroplating/stripping performance over 780 h and enables the Zn battery to achieve a Coulombic efficiency of up to 99.81% over 1000 cycles by reducing side reactions. The Y2O3@Zn||MnO2 full cell delivers a high energy density of 301.42 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 205.04 W kg-1. The work provides insights into the reversibility and stability of zinc anodes and provides a promising way to promote the practical application of Zn metal batteries.

Enhancing aqueous zinc-ion energy storage performance with ion-mediating carbon quantum dots-modified separators regulating zinc deposition behavior

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) hold promising applications owing to their safety, cost-effectiveness, and competitive capacity. However, issues such as zinc dendritic formation and side reactions severely impede their practical viability. Utilizing carbon quantum dots (CQDs) to modify cheap, tenacious, and highly hydrophilic filter paper (FP) as separator effectively improves the electrochemical performance of zinc ion energy storage systems. The structured arrangement of CQDs redistributes zinc ion transport and induces uniform zinc icon deposition, thereby improving zinc ion reaction kinetics. Moreover, the rich functional groups on the surface of CQDs readily form hydrogen bonds with active H2O, further inhibiting corrosion reactions. With the assistance of CQDs, the FP-CQDs separator maintains high ionic conductivity and a high zinc-ion transference number, ensuring dendrite-free and corrosion-resistant operation with high coulombic efficiency and a prolonged lifespan of 1200 h at 1 mA cm-2. Zn//AC hybrid capacitors incorporating FP-CQDs separator demonstrate superior capacity retention compared to those using FP separator alone, with a high capacity retention after 600 cycles at 1 A/g, while Zn//V2O5 full batteries also exhibit excellent cycling stability. Given these findings, this study presents a new composite separator for advanced aqueous zinc-ion energy storage systems.

Achieving dendrite-free growth of Zn anode by electrodepositing on zincophilic gold-furnished mesh for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Here, we report a gold-furnished mesh as the current collector for Zn electrodeposition, which is used as the anode in aqueous zinc-ion batteries. The anode exhibits excellent cycling performance without obvious dendrite growth, and the full cell shows an outstanding specific capacity and long-term durability, surpassing those of bare Zn.

Gradient Lithium Ion Regulation Current Collectors for High-Performance and Dendrite-Free Li Metal Batteries

Lithium metal anode has attracted wide attention due to its ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity, lowest reduction potential, and low density. However, uncontrollable dendritic growth and volume change caused by uneven Li+ deposition still seriously hinder the large-scale commercial application of lithium metal batteries, even causing serious battery explosions and other safety problems. Hence, gold nanoparticles with a gradient distribution anchored on 3D carbon fiber paper (CP) current collectors followed by the encapsulation of polydopamine (PDA) (CP/Au/PDA) are constructed for stable and dendrite-free Li metal anodes for the first time. Significantly, lithiophilic Au nanoparticles showing a gradient distribution in the carbon fiber paper could guide the transfer of Li+ from the outside to the inside of the CP/Au/PDA electrode as well as lower the nucleation overpotential of Li, thereby obtaining the uniform Li deposition. Meanwhile, the PDA layer could in situ be converted to Li-PDA which could serve as an efficient Li+ conductor to further facilitate uniform Li+ transport among the whole CP/Au/PDA electrode. Besides, 3D carbon fiber paper could effectively accommodate the volume change during the plating/stripping process of Li metal. As a result, CP/Au/PDA electrodes deliver a low nucleation overpotential (∼9 mV) and a high Coulombic efficiency (mean value of ∼98.8%) at a current density of 1 mA cm-2 with the capacity of 1 mA h cm-2. Furthermore, Li@CP/Au/PDA electrodes also can demonstrate an ultralow voltage hysteresis (∼20 mV) and a long cycle life (1000 h) in symmetric cells. Finally, with LiFePO4 (LFP) as the cathode, the Li@CP/Au/PDA-LFP full cell delivers a high discharge capacity of 136 mA h g-1 even after 350 cycles at 1C, exhibiting a per cycle loss as low as 0.01%. This gradient lithium ion regulation current collector is of great significance for the development of lithium metal anodes.

High Performance Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries Developed by PANI Intercalation Strategy and Separator Engineering

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted burgeoning attention and emerged as prospective alternatives for scalable energy storage applications due to their unique merits such as high volumetric capacity, low cost, environmentally friendly, and reliable safety. Nevertheless, current ZIBs still suffer from some thorny issues, including low intrinsic electron conductivity, poor reversibility, zinc anode dendrites, and side reactions. Herein, conductive polyaniline (PANI) is intercalated as a pillar into the hydrated V2O5 (PAVO) to stabilize the structure of the cathode material. Meanwhile, graphene oxide (GO) was modified onto the glass fiber (GF) membrane through simple electrospinning and laser reduction methods to inhibit dendrite growth. As a result, the prepared cells present excellent electrochemical performance with enhanced specific capacity (362 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1), significant rate capability (280 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1), and admirable cycling stability (74% capacity retention after 4800 cycles at 5 A g-1). These findings provide key insights into the development of high-performance zinc-ion batteries.

Electrolyte Solvation Chemistry for Stabilizing the Zn Anode via Functionalized Organic Agents

As a potential candidate for grid-scale energy storage technology, aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted considerable attention due to their intrinsic safety, environmental friendliness, and ease of fabrication. Nevertheless, the road to industry for this technique is hindered by serious issues, including undesired side reactions, random growth of the Zn dendrites, electrode passivation, and anode corrosion, which are associated with the high reactivity of water molecules during the electrochemical reactions. These challenges are strongly dependent on electrolyte solvation chemistry (ESC), which subsequently determines the electrochemical behavior of the metal ions and water molecules on the electrode surface. In this work, a comprehensive understanding of optimized ESC with specified functional groups on the mixing agents to stabilize the Zn anode is provided. First, the challenges facing the ZIBs and their chemical principles are outlined. Specific attention is paid to the working principles of the mixing agents with different functional groups. Then the recent progress is summarized and compared. Finally, perspectives on future research for the aqueous Zn batteries are presented from the point of view.

Deeply Discharged, Quiescently Stable, and Long-Life Zn Anode by Spontaneous SEI Formation

Zn ion batteries (ZIBs) are a promising candidate in safe and low-cost large-scale energy storage applications. However, significantly deteriorated cycling stability of Zn anode in high depth of charge or after long-term quiescence impedes the practical application of ZIBs. Aiming at the above issue, a spontaneous solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation of Zn4(OH)6SO4·xH2O (ZHS) on Zn powder is achieved in pure ZnSO4 electrolyte by facile and rational interface design. The stable and ultrathin ZHS SEI plays a crucial part in insulating water molecules and conducting Zn2+ ions, intrinsically suppressing the severe hydrogen evolution and dendrite formation on the Zn powder anode. The ZHS-Zn anode delivers a stable cycling at a high DOD of 50% for over 500 h, as well as a lifespan of over 200 h after 40-days of resting at a DOD of 25%. Benefiting from the high utilization of Zn anode, the energy density of the Zn-MnxV2O5 full cell is up to 118 Wh Kg-1. This facile method can fabricate the ZHS-Zn anode as long as 1 m, revealing its feasibility in large-scale production and commercialization.

Unveiling Organic Electrode Materials in Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries: From Structural Design to Electrochemical Performance

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are one of the most compelling alternatives of lithium-ion batteries due to their inherent safety and economics viability. In response to the growing demand for green and sustainable energy storage solutions, organic electrodes with the scalability from inexpensive starting materials and potential for biodegradation after use have become a prominent choice for AZIBs. Despite gratifying progresses of organic molecules with electrochemical performance in AZIBs, the research is still in infancy and hampered by certain issues due to the underlying complex electrochemistry. Strategies for designing organic electrode materials for AZIBs with high specific capacity and long cycling life are discussed in detail in this review. Specifically, we put emphasis on the unique electrochemistry of different redox-active structures to provide in-depth understanding of their working mechanisms. In addition, we highlight the importance of molecular size/dimension regarding their profound impact on electrochemical performances. Finally, challenges and perspectives are discussed from the developing point of view for future AZIBs. We hope to provide a valuable evaluation on organic electrode materials for AZIBs in our context and give inspiration for the rational design of high-performance AZIBs.

Construction of Selective Ion Transport Polymer at Anode-Electrolyte Interface for Stable Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries

Rampant dendrite formation and serious adverse parasitic reactions induced by migration of dissolved V/Mn cathode ions on Zn anode have hampered the high performance of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Inspired by the coordination chemistry between functional groups of polymer and electrolyte ions, a freestanding layer consisting of dopamine-functionalized polypyrrole (DA-PPy) nanowires served as a selective ion transport layer at the anode-electrolyte interface to address these two issues, which could simultaneously avoid polarization caused by the introduction of an additional interface. On the one hand, the DA-PPy layer displays excellent zinc ion and charge transfer ability, as well as provides chemical homochanneling for zinc ions at the interface, which endow the DA-PPy layer with properties as a chemical guider and physical barrier for dendrite inhibition. On the other hand, the DA-PPy layer can trap excess transition metal ions fleeing from the cathodes, thus serving as a chemical barrier, preventing the formation of Vx+/Mnx+-passivation on the surface of the zinc anode. Consequently, the AZIBs based on V2O5 and MnO2 cathodes involving the DA-PPy functional layer show a great improvement in the capacity retention.

Synergistic Cation-π Interactions and PEDOT-Based Protective Double-Layer for High Performance Zinc Anode

Ensuring effective and controlled zinc ion transportation is crucial for functionality of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and overall performance in zinc-based battery systems. Herein the first-ever demonstration of incorporate cation-π interactions are provided in the SEI to effectively facilitate uniform zinc ion flux. The artificial SEI design involves the immobilization of 4-amino-p-terphenyl (TPA), a strong amphiphilic cation-π interaction donor, as a monolayer onto a conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) matrix, which enable the establishment of a robust network of cation-π interactions. Through a carefully-designed interfacial polymerization process, a high-quality, large-area, robust is achieved, thin polymeric TPA/PEDOT (TP) film for the use of artificial SEI. Consequently, this interphase exhibits exceptional cycling stability with low overpotential and enables high reversibility of Zn plating/stripping. Symmetrical cells with TP/Zn electrodes can be cycled for more than 3200 hours at 1 mA cm-2 and 1 mAh cm-2 . And the asymmetric cells can cycle 3000 cycles stably with a high Coulomb efficiency of 99.78%. Also, under the extreme conditions of lean electrolyte and low N/P ratio, the battery with TP protective layer can still achieve ultra-stable cycle.

Zn(002)-preferred and pH-buffering triethanolamine as electrolyte additive for dendrite-free Zn anodes

Zn anodes of aqueous batteries face severe challenges from side reactions and dendrite growth. Here, triethanolamine (TEOA) is developed as an electrolyte additive to address these challenges. It enhances the exposure of Zn(002) and diminishes the change in pH. Therefore, the electrolyte containing TEOA shows improved electrochemical performance.
