Surface Adsorption and Proton Chemistry of Ultra-Stabilized Aqueous Zinc-Manganese Dioxide Batteries

Insights into the cycling stability of manganese-based zinc-ion batteries: from energy storage mechanisms to capacity fluctuation and optimization strategies

Manganese-based materials are considered as one of the most promising cathodes in zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) for large-scale energy storage applications owing to their cost-effectiveness, natural availability, low toxicity, multivalent states, high operation voltage, and satisfactory capacity. However, their intricate energy storage mechanisms coupled with unsatisfactory cycling stability hinder their commercial applications. Previous reviews have primarily focused on optimization strategies for achieving high capacity and fast reaction kinetics, while overlooking capacity fluctuation and lacking a systematic discussion on strategies to enhance the cycling stability of these materials. Thus, in this review, the energy storage mechanisms of manganese-based ZIBs with different structures are systematically elucidated and summarized. Next, the capacity fluctuation in manganese-based ZIBs, including capacity activation, degradation, and dynamic evolution in the whole cycle calendar are comprehensively analyzed. Finally, the constructive optimization strategies based on the reaction chemistry of one-electron and two-electron transfers for achieving durable cycling performance in manganese-based ZIBs are proposed.

Steric-hindrance Effect Tuned Ion Solvation Enabling High Performance Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries

Despite many additives have been reported for aqueous zinc ion batteries, steric-hindrance effect of additives and its correlation with Zn2+ solvation structure have been rarely reported. Herein, large-sized sucrose biomolecule is selected as a paradigm additive, and steric-hindrance electrolytes (STEs) are developed to investigate the steric-hindrance effect for solvation structure regulation. Sucrose molecules do not participate in Zn2+ solvation shell, but significantly homogenize the distribution of solvated Zn2+ and enlarge Zn2+ solvation shell with weakened Zn2+-H2O interaction due to the steric-hindrance effect. More importantly, STEs afford the water-shielding electric double layer and in situ construct the organic and inorganic hybrid solid electrolyte interface, which effectively boost Zn anode reversibility. Remarkably, Zn//NVO battery presents high capacity of 3.9 mAh ⋅ cm-2 with long cycling stability for over 650 cycles at lean electrolyte of 4.5 μL ⋅ mg-1 and low N/P ratio of 1.5, and the stable operation at wide temperature (-20 °C~+40 °C).

Cobalt Ion-Stabilized VO2 for Aqueous Ammonium Ion Hybrid Supercapacitors

Aqueous ammonium ion hybrid supercapacitor (A-HSC) is an efficient energy storage device based on nonmetallic ion carriers (NH4+), which combines advantages such as low cost, safety, and sustainability. However, unstable electrode structures are prone to structural collapse in aqueous electrolytes, leading to fast capacitance decay, especially in host materials represented by vanadium-based oxidation. Here, the Co2+ preintercalation strategy is used to stabilize the VO2 tunnel structure and improve the electrochemical stability of the fast NH4+ storage process. In addition, the understanding of the NH4+ storage mechanism has been deepened through ex situ structural characterization and electrochemical analysis. The results indicate that Co2+ preintercalation effectively enhances the conductivity and structural stability of VO2, and inhibits the dissolution of V in aqueous electrolytes. In addition, the charge storage mechanisms of NH4+ intercalation/deintercalation and the reversible formation/fracture of hydrogen bonds were revealed.

Structure-Property Interplay Within Microporous Manganese Dioxide Tunnels For Sustainable Energy Storage

Tunnel-structured manganese dioxides (MnO2 ), also known as octahedral molecule sieves (OMS), are widely studied in geochemistry, deionization, energy storage and (electro)catalysis. These functionalities originate from their characteristic sub-nanoscale tunnel framework, which, with a high degree of structural polymorphism and rich surface chemistry, can reversibly absorb and transport various ions. An intensive understanding of their structure-property relationship is prerequisite for functionality optimization, which has been recently approached by implementation of advanced (in situ) characterizations providing significant atomistic sciences. This review will thus timely cover recent advancements related to OMS and their energy storage applications, with a focus on the atomistic insights pioneered by researchers including our group: the origins of structural polymorphism and heterogeneity, the evolution of faceted OMS crystals and its effect on electrocatalysis, the ion transport/storage properties and their implication for processing OMS. These studies represent a clear rational behind recent endeavors investigating the historically applied OMS materials, the summary of which is expected to deepen the scientific understandings and guide material engineering for functionality control.
