Abstract
The reduction of aryl carboxylates to methyl and allyl arene was attained using a well-defined cobalt catalyst. This catalytic transformation employs only a sub-stoichiometric amount of base, and diethylsilane as a reductant. Catalytic activation of the Si-H bond of the silanes, C-O bond of the ester, and silyl ether intermediates by cobalt is crucial to achieving exhaustive reduction.

Abstract
The design of pyridine-derived organocatalysts aims at the increase of their Lewis basicity, however such an approach is not always efficient. For example, strongly Lewis basic DMAP is completely inefficient as catalyst in the cyclopropanation reaction. Herein we disclose an alternative approach that relies on attenuation of DMAP Lewis basicity. Specifically, the replacement of 4-dimethylamino substituent in DMAP for 4-MeO group delivered a highly efficient catalyst for cyclopropanation of electron-deficient olefins with α-bromoketones. Kinetic studies provide compelling evidence that the superior catalytic efficiency of 4-MeO pyridine (MOPY) is to be attributed to the favorable balance between Lewis basicity and leaving group ability. The use of chiral, enantiomerically pure MOPY catalyst has helped to achieve high enantioselectivities (up to 91 : 9 er) in the previously unreported pyridine-catalyzed cyclopropanation reaction.

Abstract
Atroposelective resolution for axially chiral nicotinamides was achieved by dynamic chiral salt formation with L-DBTA using six types of nicotinamides that could not be optically resolved by the preferential crystallization method. Kinetic studies of their racemization indicated that the chiral conformation was retained for a significant period of time. Two methods of crystallization-induced asymmetric transformation were examined by dynamic diastereomeric salt formation: solvent evaporation from a supersaturated solution, and attrition-enhanced asymmetric transformation. The attrition method was more effective for asymmetric amplification of diastereomeric salts of axially chiral materials. Attrition of equimolar amount of the nicotinamide salts with L-DBTA converged to one diastereomer salts, and the corresponding enantiomers in 87-99 % ee were obtained after the chiral acid was removed. Changing the ratio of two of the nicotinamides with L-DBTA to 1 : 2 inverted the axial chirality.

Abstract
Blue light-emitting diode-mediated environmentally sustainable three component reactions among pyridine/isoquinoline 1/2, aryl diazoesters 3, and acrylic ester/3-alkenyl oxindoles 5/6 provide various dihydroindolizines 7 to 9 in excellent yield. The principle of the strategy is photolytic generation of nitrogen ylides from N-heteroarenes and aryl diazoesters and their subsequent [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction with dipolarophiles. Detailed mechanistic analysis of the transformation through control experiments establishes this strategy as the foundation for the photolytic multicomponent reaction.

Abstract
A single-step approach is reported for the preparation of nitrones from benzyl halides and nitrosoarenes via pyridinium ylides, utilizing 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) catalyst and mild reaction conditions (Li2CO3, dimethylacetamide, and room temperature). The reaction provides both keto- and aldonitrones in high yields with a wide scope for benzyl halides and nitrosoarenes. In the same reaction system, 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane, which does not have an aryl group, also affords the corresponding N-tert-butyl nitrones from primary benzyl bromides that have an electron-withdrawing group. As an application of the reaction, methyl 2-bromo-2-phenylacetate was used to prepare the corresponding isoxazolidine by a sequential one-pot synthesis.

Abstract
A novel, metal-free aerobic oxidation method is described. 4-Dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) successfully catalyzed the oxidation of aryl α-halo esters to corresponding aryl α-keto esters (up to 95% yield) under mild reaction conditions (Li2CO3, dimethylacetamide, air, and room temperature). A mechanism has been proposed where the oxidation proceeds through a [3 + 2] cycloaddition between O2 in an air atmosphere and pyridinium ylides. The ylides are supposedly generated from aryl α-halo esters and DMAP in the presence of carbonates. Based on the plausible mechanism, the potential of DMAP as a catalyst in oxidation reactions was extended.

Abstract
Enantioselective diverse synthesis of a small-molecule collection with structural and functional similarities or differences in an efficient manner is an appealing but formidable challenge. Asymmetric preparation and branching transformations of tetrahydroindolizines in succession present a useful approach to the construction of N-heterocycle-containing scaffolds with functional group, and stereochemical diversity. Herein, we report a breakthrough toward this end via an initial diastereo- and enantioselective [3 + 2] cycloaddition between pyridinium ylides and enones, following diversified sequential transformations. Chiral N,N'-dioxide-earth metal complexes enable the generation of optically active tetrahydroindolizines in situ, across the strong background reaction for racemate-formation. In connection with deliberate sequential transformations, involving convenient rearomatic oxidation, and light-active aza-Norrish II rearrangement, the tetrahydroindolizine intermediates were converted into the final library including 3-arylindolizine derivatives and dicarbofunctionalized 1,5-dicarbonyl compounds. More importantly, the stereochemistry of four-stereogenic centered tetrahydroindolizine intermediates could be efficiently transferred into axial chirality in 3-arylindolizines and vicinal pyridyl and aryl substituted 1,5-diketones. In addition, densely functionalized cyclopropanes and bridged cyclic compounds were also discovered depending on the nature of the pyridinium ylides. Mechanism studies were involved to explain the stereochemistry during the reaction processes.

Abstract
We report a one-step procedure to directly reduce unactivated aryl esters into their corresponding tolyl derivatives. This is achieved by an organosilane-mediated ester hydrosilylation reaction and subsequent Ni/NHC-catalyzed hydrogenolysis. The resulting conditions provide a direct and efficient alternative to multi-step procedures for this transformation that often require the use of hazardous metal hydrides. Applications in the synthesis of -CD3-containing products, derivatization of bioactive molecules, and chemoselective reduction in the presence of other C-O bonds are demonstrated.

Abstract
Two new types of cyclic pyridinium ylides were designed and further used in reactions with azoalkenes to access structurally diverse spirocyclic compounds. A range of spiropyrazoline oxindoles could be smoothly obtained in up to 99% yield via a [4 + 1] annulation process with oxindole 3-pyridinium ylides as C1 synthons. Similarly, a series of spiropyrazoline indanones could be prepared with indanone 2-pyridinium ylides as C1 synthons. This work represents the first example of cyclic pyridinium ylides as C1 synthons for the efficient construction of spirocyclic compounds.

Abstract
Chromium-catalyzed cyclopropanation of alkenes with bromoform was achieved to produce the corresponding bromocyclopropanes. In this catalytic cyclopropanation, an organosilicon reductant, 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,4-dihydropyrazine (1a), was indispensable for reducing CrCl3(thf)3 to CrCl2(thf)3, as well as for in situ generation of (bromomethylidene)chromium(iii) species from (dibromomethyl)chromium(iii) species. The (bromomethylidene)chromium(iii) species are proposed to react spontaneously with alkenes to give the corresponding bromocyclopropanes. This catalytic cyclopropanation was applied to various olefinic substrates, such as allyl ethers, allyl esters, terminal alkenes, and cyclic alkenes.

Abstract
The use of carbonyl-stabilised ammonium ylides to access chiral glycidic amides and the corresponding aziridines has so far been limited to racemic trans-selective protocols. We herein report the development of an asymmetric approach to access such compounds with high levels of stereoselectivity using easily accessible chiral auxiliary-based ammonium ylides. The use of phenylglycinol as the chiral auxiliary was found to be superior to Evans or pseudoephedrine-based auxiliaries resulting in good to excellent stereoselectivities in both, epoxidation and aziridination reactions.

Abstract
Kinetics of the reactions of pyridinium, isoquinolinium, and quinolinium ylides with diarylcarbenium ions, quinone methides, and arylidene malonates (reference electrophiles) have been studied in dimethylsulfoxide solution by UV-vis spectroscopy. The second-order rate constants (log k2) were found to correlate linearly with the electrophilicities E of the reference electrophiles, as required by the linear free-energy relationship log k(20°C) = sN(N + E) (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2001, 123, 9500), which allowed us to derive the nucleophile-specific parameters N and sN for these ylides. Pyridinium substitution is found to have a similar effect on the reactivity of carbanionic reaction centers as alkoxycarbonyl substitution. Agreement between the rate constants measured for the 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of pyridinium, isoquinolinium, and quinolinium ylides with acceptor substituted dipolarophiles (arylidenemalononitrile and substituted chalcone) and those calculated from E, N, and sN shows that the above correlation can also be employed for predicting absolute rate constants of stepwise or highly unsymmetrical concerted cycloadditions. Deviations between calculated and experimental rate constants by a factor of 10(6) were demonstrated to indicate a change of reaction mechanism.
