Abstract
We have developed a phosphine-catalyzed (4+1) annulative rearrangement for the preparation of 3-pyrrolines from allenylic carbamates via phosphonium diene intermediates. We employed this methodology to synthesize an array of 1,3-disubstituted- and 1,2,3-trisubstituted-3-pyrrolines, including the often difficult to prepare 2-alkyl variants. A mechanistic investigation employing allenylic acetates and mononucleophiles unexpectedly unveiled that a phosphine-catalyzed (4+1) reaction for the construction of cyclopentene products, previously reported by Tong, might not occur through a phosphonium diene, as had been proposed, but rather through multiple mechanisms working in concert. Consequently, our phosphine-catalyzed rearrangement is most likely the first transformation to involve the unequivocal formation of a phosphonium diene intermediate along the reaction pathway. To demonstrate the synthetic utility of this newly developed reaction, we have completed concise formal syntheses of the pyrrolizidine alkaloids (±)-trachelanthamidine and (±)-supinidine.

Abstract
An enantioselective umpolung γ-addition reaction of 3'-indolyl-3-oxindoles to allenoates catalyzed by amino acid-derived bifunctional phosphine catalysts has been developed. A wide range of chiral mixed 3,3'-bisindole scaffolds containing an all-carbon quaternary stereogenic center were obtained in high yields and with excellent enantioselectivities. 3,3'-Bisindoles are valuable synthetic intermediates, the employment of which led to formal total syntheses of (+)-Chimonanthine, (+)-Folicanthine and (-)-Calycanthine, as well as facile creation of useful pyrrolidinoindoline core structure.

Abstract
An enantioselective Strecker reaction to construct trifluoromethylated quaternary stereocenters with N-PMP and unexplored N-Boc trifluoromethyl ketimines catalyzed using an organophosphine dual-reagent catalyst has been developed. The enantioselectivities of the corresponding products with the same catalyst could be switched by using different N-protecting groups (N-PMP or N-Boc). The trifluoromethyl amino nitriles were obtained in high yield and high enantioselectivity in a short time and could be easily converted to a variety of useful trifluoromethyl-containing compounds.

Abstract
A novel catalytic asymmetric dienylation of para-quinone methides with allenoates has been developed. Under mild conditions catalyzed by ( R)-SITCP, various dienylated bisarylmethides were obtained in moderate to good yields (up to 82% yield) and excellent enantioselectivities (90-98% ees). The efficacy and robustness were demonstrated by 27 examples of chiral dienylation products. A plausible mechanism, which involved 1,2 H-shift and umpolung of allenoates, was proposed based on deuterium labeling experiments and previous reports.

Abstract
The hallmark of nucleophilic phosphine catalysis is the initial nucleophilic addition of a phosphine to an electrophilic starting material, producing a reactive zwitterionic intermediate, generally under mild conditions. In this Review, we classify nucleophilic phosphine catalysis reactions in terms of their electrophilic components. In the majority of cases, these electrophiles possess carbon-carbon multiple bonds: alkenes (section 2), allenes (section 3), alkynes (section 4), and Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) alcohol derivatives (MBHADs; section 5). Within each of these sections, the reactions are compiled based on the nature of the second starting material-nucleophiles, dinucleophiles, electrophiles, and electrophile-nucleophiles. Nucleophilic phosphine catalysis reactions that occur via the initial addition to starting materials that do not possess carbon-carbon multiple bonds are collated in section 6. Although not catalytic in the phosphine, the formation of ylides through the nucleophilic addition of phosphines to carbon-carbon multiple bond-containing compounds is intimately related to the catalysis and is discussed in section 7. Finally, section 8 compiles miscellaneous topics, including annulations of the Hüisgen zwitterion, phosphine-mediated reductions, iminophosphorane organocatalysis, and catalytic variants of classical phosphine oxide-generating reactions.

Asymmetric cyanation of imines via dipeptide-derived organophosphine dual-reagent catalysis. Nat Commun 2016; 7:12720. Abstract
Over the past few decades, enantioselective phosphine organocatalysis has evolved rapidly into a highly efficient catalytic strategy for a range of useful reactions. However, as restricted by the traditional catalytic modes, some important reactions, such as asymmetric Strecker-type reactions, have thus far been out of reach of this strategy. Reported herein is an application of enantioselective phosphine organocatalysis for asymmetric Strecker-type reactions, enabled by a dual-reagent catalyst system in which the key organophosphorus zwitterion intermediate, generated in situ by mixing a chiral dipeptide-derived multifunctional organophosphine with methyl acrylate, is used as a highly efficient chiral Lewis base catalyst. The high efficiency of this catalytic system is demonstrated in the asymmetric cyanation of isatin-derived ketimines and azomethine aldimines as well as in the kinetic resolution of racemic 3-substituted azomethines. Mechanistic studies provide experimental evidence for the intermediacy of the putative zwitterion and its role as a catalytically active Lewis base. The Strecker reaction is a power method for the synthesis of cyano-substituted compounds. Here the authors report a dual-reagent system for asymmetric Strecker reactions, where an in situ formed organocatalyst/methyl acrylate zwitterionic adduct activates both the cyanide source and the electrophile.

Abstract
Phosphine-catalyzed highly enantioselective γ-additions of 5H-thiazol-4-ones and 5H-oxazol-4-ones to allenoates have been developed for the first time. With the employment of amino-acid derived bifunctional phosphines, a wide range of substituted 5H-thiazol-4-one and 5H-oxazol-4-one derivatives bearing heteroatom (S or O)-containing tertiary chiral centers were constructed in high yields and excellent enantioselectivities. The reported method provides facile access to enantioenriched tertiary thioethers/alcohols. The mechanism of the γ-addition reaction was investigated by performing DFT calculations, and the hydrogen bonding interactions between the Brønsted acid moiety of the phosphine catalysts and the "C[double bond, length as m-dash]O" unit of the donor molecules were shown to be crucial in asymmetric induction.

Abstract
Methods have recently been developed for the phosphine-catalyzed asymmetric γ-addition of nucleophiles to readily available allenoates and alkynoates to generate useful α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds that bear a stereogenic center in either the γ or the δ position (but not both) with high stereoselectivity. The utility of this approach would be enhanced considerably if the stereochemistry at both termini of the new bond could be controlled effectively. In this report, we describe the achievement of this objective, specifically, that a chiral phosphepine can catalyze the stereoconvergent γ-addition of a racemic nucleophile to a racemic electrophile; through the choice of an appropriate heterocycle as the nucleophilic partner, this new method enables the synthesis of protected α,α-disubstituted α-amino acid derivatives in good yield, diastereoselectivity, and enantioselectivity.
