Regio- and Stereoselective Dimerization of Arylacetylenes and Optical and Electrochemical Studies of (E)-1,3-Enynes

Photoinduced Palladium-Catalyzed Dicarbofunctionalization of Terminal Alkynes

Herein, a conceptually distinct approach was developed that allowed for the dicarbofunctionalization of alkynes at room temperature using simple, bench-stable alkyl iodides and a second molecule of alkyne as coupling partner. Specifically, the photochemical activation of palladium complexes enabled this strategic dicarbofunctionalization via addition of alkyl radicals from secondary and tertiary alkyl iodides and formation of an intermediate palladium vinyl complex that could undergo subsequent Sonogashira reaction with a second alkyne molecule. This alkylation-alkynylation sequence allowed the one-step synthesis of 1,3-enynes including heteroarenes and biologically active compounds with high efficiency without exogenous photosensitizers or oxidants and now opens up pathways towards cascade reactions via photochemical palladium catalysis.

Synthesis of (E)-1,4-disilsesquioxylsubstituted but-1-en-3-ynes via platinum-catalyzed dimerization of ethynylsiloxysilsesquioxanes

A new platinum complex bearing bulky N-heterocyclic carbene ligand of the general formula [Pt(IPr*Ph)(dvtms)] (where IPr*Ph = 1,3-bis{2,4,6-tris(diphenylmethyl)phenyl}imidazol-2-ylidene, dvtms = divinyltetramethyldisiloxane) exhibits a high catalytic activity towards E-selective dimerization of ethynyl substituted siloxysilsesquioxanes. This process leads to a novel class of functionalized silsesquioxane derivatives, resembling their dumbbell-shaped silsesquioxane analogues.

Pseudo-tetrahedral Rhodium and Iridium Complexes: Catalytic Synthesis of E-Enynes

The reactions of the rhodium(I) and iridium(I) complexes [M(PhBP₃ )(C₂ H₄ )(NCMe)] (PhBP₃ =PhB(CH₂ PPh₂ )₃ ^- ) with alkynes have resulted in the synthesis of a new family of pseudo-tetrahedral complexes, [M(PhBP₃ )(RC≡CR')] (M=Rh, Ir), which contain the alkyne as a four-electron donor. The reactions of these unusual compounds with two-electron donors (L=PMe₃ , CNtBu) produced a change in the "donicity" of the alkyne from a 4e^- to a 2e^- donor to give five-coordinate complexes. These were the final products with the iridium complexes, whereas further reactions took place with the rhodium complexes. In particular, C(sp)-H bond activation of the alkyne occurred leading to hydrido alkynyl complexes. This process is essential for the further reactivity of the alkynes, and if the alkyne itself was used as reagent, E-enyne complexes were obtained. As a consequence of this chemistry, we show that the complex [Rh(PhBP₃ )(C₂ H₄ )(NCMe)] is a very efficient pre-catalyst for the regioselective di- and trimerization of terminal alkynes to E-enynes and benzene derivatives, respectively. Interestingly, acetonitrile significantly enhanced the catalytic activity by facilitating the C(sp)-H bond activation step. A hydrometalation mechanism to account for these experimental observations is proposed.

Controlling the Growth of Molecular Crystal Aggregates with Distinct Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties

Two novel donor-acceptor molecules, 2,7-diphenylbenzo[1,2-b:4,3-b']difuran-4,5-dicarbonitrile and 2,7-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)benzo[1,2-b:4,3-b']difuran-4,5-dicarbonitrile containing cyano group as the electron acceptor, were synthesized. Their single-crystal structures, molecular packing, and self-assembly behaviors were also investigated. By simple solvent evaporation techniques, these compounds self-assemble into various low-dimensional microstructures that demonstrate distinctive nonlinear optical properties depending on the orientations of their transition dipoles. This study highlights the importance of the transition dipole moment in the construction of low-dimensional molecular materials with highly efficient nonlinear optical properties.
