Carbon Dots Based Photoinduced Reactions: Advances and Perspective

Novel metalloporphyrin covalently functionalized polyphosphazene nanotubes for boosting the hydrogen evolution reaction

Herein, we demonstrate the first example of a novel electrocatalytic hybrid system (CoTPP-PZSNT) with a push-pull motif to boost hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. CoTPP-PZSNT exhibits an efficient HER activity, with overpotentials of 157 and 109 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4 solutions, respectively. The HER performance of CoTPP-PZSNT outperforms many previously reported HER catalysts, due to efficient charge transfer between each component.

Novel photocatalytic carbon dots: efficiently inhibiting amyloid aggregation and quickly disaggregating amyloid aggregates

Amyloid aggregation is implicated in the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). It is critical to develop high-performance drugs to combat amyloid-related diseases. Most identified nanomaterials exhibit limited biocompatibility and therapeutic efficacy. In this work, we used a solvent-free carbonization process to prepare new photo-responsive carbon nanodots (CNDs). The surface of the CNDs is densely packed with chemical groups. CNDs with large, conjugated domains can interact with proteins through π-π stacking and hydrophobic interactions. Furthermore, CNDs possess the ability to generate singlet oxygen species (1O2) and can be used to oxidize amyloid. The hydrophobic interaction and photo-oxidation can both influence amyloid aggregation and disaggregation. Thioflavin T (ThT) fluorescence analysis and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy indicate that CNDs can block the transition of amyloid from an α-helix structure to a β-sheet structure. CNDs demonstrate efficacy in alleviating cytotoxicity induced by Aβ42 and exhibit promising blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability. CNDs have small size, low biotoxicity, good fluorescence and photocatalytic properties, and provide new ideas for the diagnosis and treatment of amyloid-related diseases.

Confined Unimolecular Micelles for Directed Self-Assembly of Ultrastable Multiple-Responsive Ratiometric Fluorescent Ultrasmall Nanoparticle Assemblies

Ultrasmall fluorescent nanomaterials have been widely studied as novel fluorescent probes; however, these nanomaterials are prone to structural damage or aggregation, and the sensitivity and accuracy of most single emission fluorescence probes were very low. Therefore, the controlled synthesis of stable dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence ultrasmall assembly probes still remains a challenge. Herein, star-like polymer unimolecular micelles were utilized as a scaffold template to encapsulate fluorescent ultrasmall carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) via the polymer template directed self-assembly strategy to obtain multiple-responsive ratiometric fluorescent assemblies. The assemblies were ultrastable, well-defined, and nearly monodispersed with controlled size, regular morphology, and pH- and thermal-responsiveness. The assemblies can be applied to realize rapid, sensitive, quantitative, and specific detection of Cu2+ and GSH. Moreover, the convenient rapid real-time detection was realized via the combination of the visualized paper-based sensor, and the multilevel information encryption was also achieved.

A Mini Review on Borate Photocatalysts for Water Decomposition: Synthesis, Structure, and Further Challenges

The development of novel photocatalysts, both visible and UV-responsive, for water decomposition reactions is of great importance. Here we focused on the application of the borates as photocatalysts in water decomposition reactions, including water splitting reaction, hydrogen evolution half-reaction, and oxygen evolution half-reaction. In addition, the rates of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution by these borate photocatalysts in different water decomposition reactions were summarized. Further, the review summarized the synthetic chemistry and structural features of existing borate photocatalysts for water decomposition reactions. Synthetic chemistry mainly includes high-temperature solid-state method, sol-gel method, precipitation method, hydrothermal method, boric acid flux method, and high-pressure method. Next, we summarized the crystal structures of the borate photocatalysts, with a particular focus on the form of the B-O unit and metal-oxygen polyhedral in the borates, and used this to classify borate photocatalysts, which are rarely mentioned in the current photocatalysis literature. Finally, we analyzed the relationship between the structural features of the borate photocatalysts and photocatalytic performance to discuss the further challenges faced by the borate photocatalysts for water decomposition reactions.

Herbal Medicine-Inspired Carbon Quantum Dots with Antibiosis and Hemostasis Effects for Promoting Wound Healing

Bleeding and bacterial infections are crucial factors affecting wound healing. The usage of herbal medicine-derived materials holds great potential for promoting wound healing. However, the uncertain intrinsic effective ingredients and unclear mechanism of action remain great concerns. Herein, inspired by the herbal medicine Ligusticum wallichii, we reported the synthesis of tetramethylpyrazine-derived carbon quantum dots (TMP-CQDs) for promoting wound healing. Of note, the use of TMP as the precursor instead of L. wallichii ensured the repeatability and homogeneity of the obtained products. Furthermore, TMP-CQDs exhibited high antibacterial activity. Mechanically, TMP-CQDs inhibited the DNA repair, biosynthesis, and quorum sensing of the bacteria and induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, TMP-CQDs could accelerate blood coagulation through activating factor VIII and promoting platelet aggregation. Effective wound healing was achieved by using TMP-CQDs in the Staphylococcus aureus-infected mouse skin wound model. This study sheds light on the development of herbal medicine-inspired materials as effective therapeutic drugs.

n-Type Fullerene-Carbon Dots: Synthesis and Electrochemical and Photophysical Properties

The covalent incorporation of C60 and C70 derivatives of the well-known n-type organic semiconductor PCBM ([6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester) onto carbon dots (CD) is described. Morphological and structural characterization reveal combined features of both pristine starting materials (CD and PCBM). Electrochemical investigations evidenced the existence of additional reduction processes to that of CD or PCBM precursors, showing rich electron-acceptor capabilities, with multistep processes in an affordable and narrow electrochemical window (ca. 1.5 V). Electronic communication in the obtained nanoconjugated species were derived from steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopies, which showed bathochromically shifted absorptions and emissions well entering the red region. Finally, the lower fluorescence quantum yield of CD-PCBM nanoconjugates, compared with CD, and the fast decay of the observed emission of CD, support the existence of an electronic communication between both CD and PCBM units in the excited state.

Chiral CDs-based fluorescence sensor for rapid and specific sensing K4[Fe(CN)6] in table salt and salted food

Potassium ferricyanide (K4[Fe(CN)6]) as anti-caking agent plays an important role in avoiding the formation of chunks for fine particulate solids. However, inappropriate and excessive addition and decomposition of K4[Fe(CN)6] are detrimental to physical health. At present, appropriate strategies for convenient and accurate analysis of K4[Fe(CN)6] in table salt and pickled food are desirable. Herein, an efficient "ON-OFF-ON" fluorescent sensor based on chiral carbon dots was prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The chiral CDs with L-Tryptophan and D-Tryptophan as chiral source were named as L-CDs and D-CDs. Notably, the bright fluorescence of L/D-CDs could be effectively quenched by K4[Fe(CN)6] through dynamic quenching mechanism. This fluorescent sensor achieved excellent sensitive and selective detection of K4[Fe(CN)6] with a limit of detection (LOD) of 25.0 ng·mL-1. In addition, the L/D-CDs could be applied not only for selective fluorescent recognition of K4[Fe(CN)6] by the methods of portable filter paper and hydrogels, but also as fluorescent dye for repeated message encryption and decryption.

Carbon dots@noble metal nanoparticle composites: research progress report

Carbon dots@noble metal nanoparticle composites are formed by combining carbon dots and metal nanoparticles using various strategies. Carbon dots exhibit a reducing ability and function as stabilisers; consequently, metal-ion solutions can be directly reduced by them to synthesise gold, silver, and gold-silver alloy particles. Carbon dots@gold/silver/gold-silver particle composites have demonstrated the potential for several practical applications owing to their superior properties and simple preparation process. Until now, several review articles have been published to summarise fluorescent carbon dots or noble metal nanomaterials. Compared with metal-free carbon dots, carbon dots@noble metal nanoparticles have a unique morphology and structure, resulting in new physicochemical properties, which allow for sensing, bioimaging, and bacteriostasis applications. Therefore, to promote the effective development of carbon dots@noble metal nanoparticle composites, this paper primarily reviews carbon dots@gold/silver/gold-silver alloy nanoparticle composites for the first time in terms of the following aspects. (1) The synthesis strategies of carbon dots@noble metal nanoparticle composites are outlined. The principle and function of carbon dots in the synthesis strategies are examined. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods and composites are analysed. (2) The characteristics and properties of such composites are described. (3) The applications of these composite materials are summarised. Finally, the potentials and limitations of carbon dots@noble metal nanoparticle composites are discussed, thus laying the foundation for their further development.

Novel solution and solid-state emissive long-wavelength carbon dots for water sensing and white LED applications

Carbon dots (CDs) are among the most popular nanomaterials due to their remarkable fluorescent and electronic properties, as well as their good biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. Currently, CDs with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) are relatively rare and have become a significant research hotspot. This is because most conventional CDs suffer from severe quenching in a solid state. Herein, novel CDs with both solution and solid-state emissions were obtained using a facile one-step hydrothermal synthesis. Specifically, the CDs exhibit yellow solvent-dependent fluorescence in solution state (λem = 580 nm) and red AIE emission in solid state (λem = 640 nm). CDs powder is utilized as a red phosphor for light-emitting diode (LED). The resulting fabricated white LEDs (WLEDs) demonstrate good performance metrics, including a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 89.5, Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) of 3876 K, and commission Internationale d'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.350, 0.331). Furthermore, the solvent-dependent phenomenon observed in AIE-CDs can be exploited to apply their solution as a highly sensitive fluorescence sensor for quantitatively detecting amounts of water in various organic solvents. The method offers both high accuracy and sensitivity, with R2 values varying from 0.853 to 0.994 and a low detection limit ranging from 0.296 to 3.23 % across a wide linear range. This inherent versatility makes the CDs suitable for a wide range of applications, including sensing and LED devices.

Toxicity assessment of poultry-waste biosynthesized nanosilver in Anabas testudineus (Bloch, 1792) for responsible and sustainable aquaculture development-A multi-biomarker approach

The current study investigates the potential utilization of poultry intestines for the synthesis of stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and their impact on fish physiology. The AgNPs were synthesized and characterized using various analytical techniques. The toxicity of AgNPs on Anabas testudineus was evaluated, determining a 96-h LC50 value of 25.46 mg l-1. Subsequently, fish were exposed to concentrations corresponding to 1/10th, 1/25th, 1/50th, and 1/100th of the estimated LC50 for a duration of 60 days in a sub-acute study. A comprehensive range of biomarkers, including haematological, serum, oxidative stress, and metabolizing markers, were analyzed to assess the physiological responses of the fish. Additionally, histopathological examinations were conducted, and the accumulation of silver in biomarker organs was measured. The results indicate that silver tends to bioaccumulate in all biomarker organs in a dose- and time-dependent manner, except for the muscle tissue, where accumulation initially increased and subsequently decreased, demonstrating the fish's inherent ability for natural attenuation. Analysis of physiological data and integrated biomarker responses reveal that concentrations of 1/10th, 1/25th, and 1/50th of the LC50 can induce stress in the fish, while exposure to 1/100th of the LC50 shows minimal to no stress response. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the toxicity and physiological responses of fish exposed to poultry waste biosynthesized AgNPs, offering potential applications in aquaculture while harnessing their unique features.

Synthesis of pH-Sensitive Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Dots with Biological Imaging Function and Their Application in Cu2+ and Fe2+ Determination by Ratiometric Fluorescent Probes

pH-sensitive nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were synthesized using immature seeds of elm trees as a carbon source and ethylenediamine as a coreactant through a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The N-CDs were characterized using fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence lifetime, ultraviolet-visible absorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as transmission electron microscopy. The N-CDs displayed excellent fluorescence properties and responded to pH changes. The N-CDs exhibited low toxicity and good biocompatibility and had the potential to be used for the biological imaging of HeLa cells and mung bean sprouts. Utilizing the mechanism of fluorescence resonance energy transfer, ratiometric fluorescent probes were prepared by simple mixing of N-CDs and fluorexon in a Britton-Robinson buffer solution. The ratiometric fluorescent probe was used to detect Cu2+ and Fe2+. The linear equations were RCu = -0.0591[Q] + 3.505 (R2 = 0.992) and RFe = -0.0874[Q] + 3.61 (R2 = 0.999). The corresponding limits of detection were 0.5 and 0.31 μM, respectively. The good results had been obtained in the actual samples detection.

Synthetic strategies, properties and sensing application of multicolor carbon dots: recent advances and future challenges

Recently, carbon dots (CDs) as newly developed carbon-based nanomaterials due to advantages such as excellent photostability and easy surface functionalization have generated wide application prospects in fields such as biological imaging and chemical sensing. The multicolor emission carbon dots (M-CDs) were acquired through the selection of different carbon source precursors, change of synthesis conditions and synthesis environment. Therefore, the aim of this review is to summarize the latest research progress in polychromatic CDs from the perspectives of synthesis strategies, luminescent mechanisms, luminescent properties and applications. This review focuses on how to prepare MCDs by changing raw materials and synthesis conditions such as reaction temperature, synthesis time, synthesis pH, and synthesis solvent. This review also presents the optical properties of MCDs, concentration effects, solvent effects, pH effects, elemental doping, and surface passivation on them, as well as their creative applications in the field of sensing applications. It is anticipated that this review will serve as a guide for the development of multifunctional M-CDs and inspire future research on controllable design and preparation of M-CDs.

Polymer-Derived Carbon Nanofiber and Its Photocurrent-Switching Responses of Carbon Nanofiber/Cu Nanocomposite in Wide Ranges of Excited Light Wavelength

Transformation into electric or photoelectric functional composite from non-conjugated polymers is a great challenge due to the presence of a large number of locative states. In this paper, carbon nanofiber was synthesized via hydrothermal carbonization utilizing carboxymethyl cellulose as a precursor, and the carbon nanofiber/Cu nanocomposite was constructed for defect passivation. The results indicated that the resulting nanocomposites exhibited good absorbance in visible light range and NIR (near-infrared). The photoconductive responses to typical weak visible light (650 nm et al.) and NIR (808, 980, and 1064 nm) were studied based on Au gap electrodes on flexible polymer substrates. The results exhibited that the nanocomposite's solid thick film showed photocurrent-switching behaviors to visible light and NIR, the switch-ratio was depending on the wavelengths and power of incident lights. The positive and negative photoconductance responses phenomenon was observed in different compositions and changing excited wavelengths. Their photophysical mechanisms were discussed. This illustrated that the nanocomposites easily produce free electrons and holes via low power of incident light. Free electrons and holes could be utilized for different purposes in multi-disciplinary fields. It would be a potential application in broadband flexible photodetectors, artificial vision, simulating retina, and bio-imaging from visible light to NIR. This is a low-cost and green approach to obtain nanocomposite exhibiting good photocurrent response from the visible range to NIR.

Large-Scale Synthesis of Tunable Fluorescent Carbon Dots Powder for Light-Emitting Diodes and Fingerprint Identification

The emergence and fast development of carbon dots (CDs) provide an unprecedented opportunity for applications in the field of photoelectricity, but their practicability still suffers from complicated synthesis procedures and the substrate dependence of solid-state fluorescence. In this study, we design a unique microwave-assisted solid-phase synthesis route for preparing tunable fluorescent CD powders with yellow, orange, and red fluorescence (Y-CDs, O-CDs, R-CDs) by simply adjusting the mass ratio of reactants, a method which is suitable for the large-scale synthesis of CDs. The Y-/O-/R-CDs were systematically characterized using physics and spectroscopy techniques. Based on the perfect solid-state fluorescence performance of the proposed fluorescent CD powders, the Y-/O-/R-CDs were successfully applied for the construction of multi-color and white light-emitting diode devices at low cost. Furthermore, the Y-CDs displayed much higher yield and luminous efficiency than the O-CDs and R-CDs and were further used for fingerprint identification on the surfaces of glass sheets and tinfoil. In addition, the R-CD aqueous solution fluorescence is sensitive to pH, suggesting its use as a pH indicator for monitoring intracellular pH fluctuations. The proposed series of fluorescent powders composed of CDs may herald a new era in the application of optical components and criminal investigation fields.
