Quantum Tunneling Fingerprints of Chirality-Induced Symmetry Preferences in Methyl Lactate Dimer

Methyl lactate, a chiral molecule with multiple functional groups, has played a pivotal role in advancing experimental and theoretical chiroptical methods. Leveraging conformer-specific jet-cooled rotational spectroscopy in tandem with extensive conformational searches and quantum chemical calculations, we investigated chirality self-recognition in the methyl lactate dimer. The experimental fingerprint-like spectral patterns, including methyl rotor tunneling splittings, allowed the definite identification of one heterochiral and two homochiral binary conformers from a large number of low-energy candidates. Nuclear spin statistics analyses and methyl internal rotor parameters reveal different nuclear tunneling dynamics in the homochiral versus heterochiral environments and highlight the associated chirality-driven symmetry preference in the observed conformers. The results provide comprehensive experimental data for benchmarking quantum chemical calculations of chiral properties and pave the way for the exploration of this prototypical dimer across different frequency ranges using other spectroscopic tools.

Rotational Spectroscopy of the Acetone-Water Complex: Large Amplitude Motions

Acetone (CH3COCH3), the simplest ketone, has recently attracted considerable attention for its important role in atmospheric chemistry and in the formation of ices in extraterrestrial sources that contain complex organic molecules. In this study, we employed a combination of experimental rotational spectroscopy and quantum chemistry calculations to investigate the structure and dynamics of the acetone-water complex. Our aim was to understand how non-covalent interactions with water affect the methyl internal rotation dynamics of acetone, and how water-centered large amplitude motions alter the observed physical properties compared to those predicted at the equilibrium position. Detailed rotation-tunneling analyses of acetone-H2O and -D2O reveal that the interactions with water disrupt the equivalence of the two methyl rotors, resulting in a noticeably lower methyl rotor barrier for the top with the close-by water compared to that of free acetone. The barrier for the methyl group further from water is also lower, although to a lesser degree. To gain further insights, extensive theoretical modelling was conducted, focusing on the associated large amplitude motions. Furthermore, quantum theory of atoms in molecules and non-covalent interactions analyses were utilized to visualize the underlying causes of the observed trends.

The Clusters-in-a-Liquid Approach for Solvation: New Insights from the Conformer Specific Gas Phase Spectroscopy and Vibrational Optical Activity Spectroscopy

Vibrational optical activity spectroscopies, namely vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and Raman optical activity (ROA), have been emerged in the past decade as powerful spectroscopic tools for stereochemical information of a wide range of chiral compounds in solution directly. More recently, their applications in unveiling solvent effects, especially those associated with water solvent, have been explored. In this review article, we first select a few examples to demonstrate the unique sensitivity of VCD spectral signatures to both bulk solvent effects and explicit hydrogen-bonding interactions in solution. Second, we discuss the induced solvent chirality, or chiral transfer, VCD spectral features observed in the water bending band region in detail. From these chirality transfer spectral data, the related conformer specific gas phase spectroscopic studies of small chiral hydration clusters, and the associated matrix isolation VCD experiments of hydrogen-bonded complexes in cold rare gas matrices, a general picture of solvation in aqueous solution emerges. In such an aqueous solution, some small chiral hydration clusters, rather than the chiral solutes themselves, are the dominant species and are the ones that contribute mainly to the experimentally observed VCD features. We then review a series of VCD studies of amino acids and their derivatives in aqueous solution under different pHs to emphasize the importance of the inclusion of the bulk solvent effects. These experimental data and the associated theoretical analyses are the foundation for the proposed "clusters-in-a-liquid" approach to account for solvent effects effectively. We present several approaches to identify and build such representative chiral hydration clusters. Recent studies which applied molecular dynamics simulations and the subsequent snapshot averaging approach to generate the ROA, VCD, electronic CD, and optical rotatory dispersion spectra are also reviewed. Challenges associated with the molecular dynamics snapshot approach are discussed and the successes of the seemingly random "ad hoc explicit solvation" reported before are also explained. To further test and improve the "clusters-in-a-liquid" model in practice, future work in terms of conformer specific gas phase spectroscopy of sequential solvation of a chiral solute, matrix isolation VCD measurements of small chiral hydration clusters, and more sophisticated models for the bulk solvent effects would be highly valuable.
