Phenanthrothiophene-Triazine Star-Shaped Discotic Liquid Crystals: Synthesis, Self-Assembly, and Stimuli-Responsive Fluorescence Properties

Lipophilic biphenylthiophene- and phenanthrothiophene-triazine compounds, BPTTn and CPTTn, respectively, were prepared by a tandem procedure involving successive Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and Scholl cyclodehydrogenation reactions. These compounds display photoluminescence in solution and in thin film state, solvatochromism with increasing solvent's polarity, as well as acidochromism and metal ion recognition stimuli-responsive fluorescence. Protonation of BPTT10 and CPTT10 by trifluoroacetic acid results in fluorescence quenching, which is reversibly restored once treated with triethylamine (ON-OFF switch). DFT computational studies show that intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) phenomena occurs for both molecules, and reveal that protonation enhances the electron-withdrawing ability of the triazine core and reduces the band gap. This acidochromic behavior was applied to a prototype fluorescent anti-counterfeiting device. They also specifically recognize Fe3+ through coordination, and the recognition mechanism is closely related to the photoinduced electron transfer between Fe3+ and BPTT10/CPTT10. CPTTn self-assemble into columnar rectangular (Colrec) mesophase, which can be modulated by oleic acid via the formation of a hydrogen-bonded supramolecular liquid crystal hexagonal Colhex mesophase. Finally, CPTTn also form organic gels in alkanes at low critical gel concentration (3.0 mg/mL). Therefore, these star-shaped triazine molecules possess many interesting features and thus hold great promises for information processing, liquid crystal semiconductors and organogelators.

Reentrant 2D Nanostructured Liquid Crystals by Competition between Molecular Packing and Conformation: Potential Design for Multistep Switching of Ionic Conductivity

Reentrant phenomena in soft matter and biosystems have attracted considerable attention because their properties are closely related to high functionality. Here, we report a combined experimental and computational study on the self-assembly and reentrant behavior of a single-component thermotropic smectic liquid crystal toward the realization of dynamically functional materials. We have designed and synthesized a mesogenic molecule consisting of an alicyclic trans,trans-bicyclohexyl mesogen and a polar cyclic carbonate group connected by a flexible tetra(oxyethylene) spacer. The molecule exhibits an unprecedented sequence of layered smectic phases, in the order: smectic A-smectic B-reentrant smectic A. Electron density profiles and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations indicate that competition between the stacking of bicyclohexyl mesogens and the conformational flexibility of tetra(oxyethylene) chains induces this unusual reentrant behavior. Ion-conductive reentrant liquid-crystalline materials have been developed, which undergo the multistep conductivity changes in response to temperature. The reentrant liquid crystals have potential as new mesogenic materials exhibiting switching functions.

Augmented Self-Association by Electrostatic Forces in Thienopyrrole-Fused Thiadiazoles that Contain an Ester instead of an Ether Linker

During the self-assembly of π-conjugated molecules, linkers and substituents can potentially add supportive noncovalent intermolecular interactions to π-stacking interactions. Here, we report the self-assembly behavior of thienopyrrole-fused thiadiazole (TPT) fluorescent dyes that possess ester or ether linkers and dodecyloxy side chains in solution and the condensed phase. A comparison of the self-association behavior of the ester- and ether-bridged compounds in solution using detailed UV-vis, fluorescence, and NMR spectroscopic studies revealed that the subtle replacement of the ether linkers by ester linkers leads to a distinct increase in the association constant (ca. 3-4 fold) and the enthalpic contribution (ca. 3 kcal mol-1). Theoretical calculations suggest that the ester linkers, which are in close proximity to one another due to the π-stacking interactions, induce attractive electrostatic forces and augment self-association. The self-assembly of TPT dyes into well-defined 1D clusters with high aspect ratios was observed, and their morphologies and crystallinity were investigated using SEM and X-ray diffraction analyses. TPTs with ester linkers exhibit a columnar liquid crystalline mesophase in the condensed phase.

Current Topics in Ionic Liquid Crystals

Ionic liquid crystals (ILCs), that is, ionic liquids exhibiting mesomorphism, liquid crystalline phases, and anisotropic properties, have received intense attention in the past years. Among others, this is due to their special properties arising from the combination of properties stemming from ionic liquids and from liquid crystalline arrangements. Besides interesting fundamental aspects, ILCs have been claimed to have tremendous application potential that again arises from the combination of properties and architectures that are not accessible otherwise, or at least not accessible easily by other strategies. The current review highlights recent developments in ILC research, starting with some key fundamental aspects. Further subjects covered include the synthesis and variations of modern ILCs, including the specific tuning of their mesomorphic behavior. The review concludes with reflections on some applications that may be within reach for ILCs and finally highlights a few key challenges that must be overcome prior and during true commercialization of ILCs.

Unveiling the Role of Hydrogen Bonds in Luminescent N-Annulated Perylene Liquid Crystals

We report the liquid‐crystalline (LC) and luminescent properties of a series of N‐annulated perylenes (1–4) in whose molecular structures amide and ester groups alternate. We found that the LC properties of these compounds not only depend on the number of hydrogen‐bonding units, but also on the relative position of the amide linkers in the molecule. The absence of amide groups in compound 1 leads to no LC properties, whereas four amide groups induce the formation of a wide temperature range columnar hexagonal phase in compound 4. Remarkably, compound 3, with two amide groups in the inner part of the structure, stabilizes the columnar LC phases better than its structural isomer 2, with the amide groups in the outer part of the molecule. Similarly, we found that only compounds 1 and 2, which have no hydrogen bonding units in the inner part of the molecule, exhibit luminescence vapochromism upon exposure to organic solvent vapors.

Stabilization of Bicontinuous Cubic Phase and Its Two-Sided Nature Produced by Use of Siloxane Tails and Introduction of Molecular Nonsymmetry

A recent intriguing finding that a helical network arrangement forms the bicontinuous cubic phase is attracting great attention for the possibility of new routes to asymmetric synthesis by achiral molecules. However, the design of the molecular structure for the cubic phase is still unrevealed. In this work, a nonsymmetric core molecule with larger naphthalene and smaller benzene moieties at each side of the central linkage and the same disiloxanyldecyloxy terminal at both terminals is shown to be the first example of molecule forming both single-layered and double-layered core assembly modes in the Ia3d phase as a single molecule system. The molecule forms the former mode at high temperatures as a thermodynamically stable phase, similarly to the symmetric naphthalene core system, whereas, on cooling below a temperature (∼350 K), a metastable Ia3d phase forms a double-layered core state down to room temperature, which is common to the benzene core system. As another effect of the nonsymmetric core, the cubic phase is maintained at room temperature for more than 100 days with slight distortion. Infrared spectral studies and quantum chemical calculations suggested the easy transformation between the two core assembly modes. The core nonsymmetry can be a versatile fine-tuning of the core assembly mode and phase stability for the cubic phase molecules.

Columnar Mesomorphism of Board-Shaped Perylene, Diketopyrrolopyrrole, Isoindigo, Indigo, and Quinoxalino-Phenanthrophenazine Dyes

The properties of organic dyes depend as much on their intermolecular interactions as on their molecular structure. While it is generally predictable what supramolecular structure would be ideal for a specific application, the generation of specific supramolecular structures by molecular design and suitable processing methods remains to be a challenge. A versatile approach to different supramolecular structures has been the application of mesomorphism in conjunction with alignment techniques and self-assembly at interfaces. Reviewed here is the columnar mesomorphism of board-shaped dyes perylene, indigo, isoindigo, diketopyrrolopyrrole, and quinoxalinophenanthrophenazine. They generate a larger number of different supramolecular structures than conventional disc-shaped (discotic) mesogens because of their non-circular shape and directional intermolecular interactions. The mesomorphism of all but the perylene derivatives is systematically and comprehensively covered for the first time.

Tuning of Ionic Liquid Crystal Properties by Combining Halogen Bonding and Fluorous Effect

We report halogen-bonded complexes between 1-polyfluoroalkyl-3-alkylimidazolium iodides and mono-iodoperfluoroalkanes of different chain lengths or di-iodoperfluorooctane. ¹⁹ F NMR analyses revealed that the preferred stoichiometry between the donors and acceptors is 1 : 1 in the cases of the mono-iodoperfluoroalkanes, and 2 : 1 with di-iodoperfluorooctane, as a result of the monodentate behavior of the iodide anion (halogen bond acceptor). Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses showed the presence of a perfluorinated superanion, which interdigitates with the cation fluorinated chains, favoring the formation of lamellar structures. All of the obtained supramolecular complexes exhibit enantiotropic liquid crystalline phases over a broad range of temperatures. Most of the obtained complexes show melting points lower than 100 °C, two of them being liquid at room temperature, thus representing a new family of fluorinated ionic liquid crystals.

Controlling Mirror Symmetry Breaking and Network Formation in Liquid Crystalline Cubic, Isotropic Liquid and Crystalline Phases of Benzil-Based Polycatenars

Spontaneous development of chirality in systems composed of achiral molecules is important for new routes to asymmetric synthesis, chiral superstructures and materials, as well as for the understanding of the mechanisms of emergence of prebiotic chirality. Herein, it is shown that the 4,4'-diphenylbenzil unit is a universal transiently chiral bent building block for the design of multi-chained (polycatenar) rod-like molecules capable of forming a wide variety of helically twisted network structures in the liquid, the liquid crystalline (LC) and the crystalline state. Single polar substituents at the apex of tricatenar molecules support the formation of the achiral (racemic) cubic double network phase with Ia 3 ‾ d symmetry and relatively small twist along the networks. The combination of an alkyl chain with fluorine substitution leads to the homogeneously chiral triple network phase with I23 space group, and in addition, provides a mirror symmetry broken liquid. Replacing F by Cl or Br further increases the twist, leading to a short pitch double gyroid Ia 3 ‾ d phase, which is achiral again. The effects of the structural variations on the network structures, either leading to achiral phases or chiral conglomerates are analyzed.

On the Structure and Chiral Aggregation of Liquid Crystalline Star-Shaped Triazines H-Bonded to Benzoic Acids

The ability of a star-shaped tris(triazolyl)triazine derivative to hierarchically build supramolecular chiral columnar organizations through the formation of H-bonded complexes with benzoic acids was studied from a theoretical and experimental point of view. The combined study has been done at three different levels including the study of the structure of the triazine core, the association with benzoic acids in stoichiometry 1:3, and the assembly of 1:3 complexes in helical aggregates. Although the star-shaped triazine core crystallizes in a non-C₃ conformation, the C₃ -symmetric conformation is theoretically predicted to be more stable and gives rise to a favorable C₃ supramolecular 1:3 complex upon the interaction with three benzoic acids in their voids. In addition, calculations at different levels (DFT, PM7, and MM3) for the 1:3 host-guest complex predict the formation of large stable columnar helical aggregates stabilized by the compact packing of the interstitial acids by π-π and CH⋅⋅⋅π interactions. The acids restrict the movement of the the star-shaped triazine cores along the stacking axis causing a template effect in the self-assembly of the complex. Theoretical predictions correlate with experimental results, since the interaction with achiral or chiral 3,4,5-(4-alkoxybenzyloxy)benzoic acids gives rise to supramolecular complexes that organize in bulk hexagonal columnar mesophases stable at room temperature with intracolumnar order. The existence of supramolecular chirality in the mesophase was determined for complexes formed by acids derived from (S)-2-octanol. Chiral aggregation was also evidenced for complexes formed in dodecane.

Liquid Organic Frameworks: A Liquid Crystalline 8-Connected Network with Body-Centered Cubic Symmetry

Liquid state self-assembly is important for the understanding of the complex structures developed in abiogenesis and biogenesis as well as for numerous potential technological applications. Herein we report the first body-centered cubic liquid crystalline phase with 8-connected network topology and open octahedral network structure. It is formed by dynamic soft self-assembly of X-shaped polyphiles with oligo(para-phenylene-ethynylene) cores. The π-conjugated rods with perfluorinated inner benzene rings form networks conjoined by eight-way junctions, which are formed by nano-segregated spheres involving hydrogen-bonded polar end groups, while the branched aliphatic chains at opposite sides of the cores fill the continuum. This novel cubic phase is based on the I-WP minimal surface separating the frameworks of polyaromatic cores from the most disordered chain segments. It can also be considered as a dense sphere packing. Such liquid organic frameworks, representing hybrids of sphere packings and networks could be of interest for organic photonics and other technologies.

Luminescent Metallacycle-Cored Liquid Crystals Induced by Metal Coordination

Two rhomboidal metallacycles based on metal-coordination-driven self-assembly are presented. Because metal-coordination interactions restrict the rotation of phenyl groups on tetraphenylethene units, these metallacycles were emissive both in solution and in solid state, and their aggregation-induced emission properties were well-retained. Moreover, the rhomboidal metallacyclic structures offer a platform for intermolecular packing beneficial for the formation of liquid crystalline phases. Therefore, although neither of building blocks shows mesogenic properties, both thermotropic and lyotropic (in DMF) mesophases were observed in one of metallacycles, indicating that mesophases could be induced by metal-coordination interactions. This study not only reveals the mechanism for the formation of cavity-cored liquid crystals, but also provides a convenient approach to preparing supramolecular luminescent liquid crystals, which will serve as good candidates for chemo sensors and liquid crystal displays.

Chirality Induction through Nano-Phase Separation: Alternating Network Gyroid Phase by Thermotropic Self-Assembly of X-Shaped Bolapolyphiles

The single gyroid phase as well as the alternating double network gyroid, composed of two alternating single gyroid networks, hold a significant place in ordered nanoscale morphologies for their potential applications as photonic crystals, metamaterials and templates for porous ceramics and metals. Here, we report the first alternating network cubic liquid crystals. They form through self-assembly of X-shaped polyphiles, where glycerol-capped terphenyl rods lie on the gyroid surface while semiperfluorinated and aliphatic side-chains fill their respective separate channel networks. This new self-assembly mode can be considered as a two-color symmetry-broken double gyroid morphology, providing a tailored way to fabricate novel chiral structures with sub-10 nm periodicities using achiral compounds.

Light-Emitting Chiral Nematic Dimers with Anomalous Odd-Even Effect

In this report, based on the results derived from the extensive study into the thermal and photophysical properties, an anomalous mesomorphic behavior of photoluminescent, chiral nematic (N*) liquid crystalline dimers, belonging to two different series has been revealed. They comprise cholesterol and fluorescent three-ring Schiff base or salicylaldimine core interlinked via an ω-oxyalkanoyloxy spacer of varying length and parity. The effect of molecular structure on the liquid crystal (LC) behavior and photophysical properties of both the series has been probed by varying the length of the terminal n-alkoxy tails for a fixed (odd or even) parity of the spacer. The detailed investigations using complementary techniques not only evidenced the existence of the N* phase in all the dimers synthesized but also the occurrence of an intriguing odd-even effect; blue phases (BPs) exist in all the dimers comprising even-membered spacer, which surprisingly remains totally absent in their odd-membered counterparts. While the results reported hitherto are exactly opposite to the aforesaid findings, this atypical behavior has been interpreted in terms of the over-all shape of the dimers rendered by the orientation of terminal tails. Photophysical studies carried out clearly revealed the intrinsic light emitting feature of the dimers not only in their dilute solutions but also in their three condensed states viz., solid, N* phase, and isotropic liquid state; the emission intensities of the N* phase varies with the change in temperature, as expected. CD spectra of the N* phase recorded as a function of temperature show bisignate CD band characteristically, signifying large chiral correlations in the molecular self-assembly, while the origin of bands from positive to negative region suggests a right-handed twist of the N* helix.

Free Space in Liquid Crystals-Molecular Design, Generation, and Usage

In the last 50 years, an important aim of molecular and materials design has been the generation of space for the uptake of guest molecules in macrocycles and cryptands, in dendrimers as monomolecular containers, and recently in porous networks like metal-organic and covalent organic frameworks. Such molecular, oligomeric, and polymeric materials can be applied for sensing, separation, catalysis, drug delivery, and gas storage, among others. The common goal is the recognition of molecules and their uptake into and release from an appropriate space. Typically, completely empty space is unfavorable in crystalline materials. Therefore, the elimination of molecules from the cavities is often accompanied by the collapse of the cavities, that is, by a change in the molecular conformation. In contrast to this solid matter, in which the cavities are rationally designed by covalent or coordinative bonds, liquid crystals (LCs) are fluid materials with high molecular mobility. Thus, the proposal of empty space in LCs is certainly a scientific provocation. However, various recent publications on columnar mesophases claim the existence of pores with low electron density or even completely empty space on the basis of X-ray and solid-state NMR studies. Although the latter may be debated, there are many examples in which LCs take up dopants such as polymerizable monomers in disclination lines, perdeuterated chains in the interstices between columns, or electron acceptors to fill mesogens with incommensurate building blocks, which eventually stabilize the LC phases. It seems that in LC science the generation and usage of free space has been studied only occasionally and were lucky discoveries rather than investigations based on rational design. This Account summarizes the research on the formal generation of void in LCs and highlights that rational design of molecules can lead to unconventional mesophases by efficient filling of the provided space, as was shown with shuttlecock mesogens and discotic mesogens related to the concept of complementary polytopic interactions. The topic was recently further developed by the investigation of shape-persistent star mesogens. Despite the formally empty space between their arms, they all form columnar liquid crystals. Such shape-persistent oligo(phenylenevinylene) molecules fill the void and efficiently nanosegregate by helical packing in columns and deformation of the molecular scaffold at the expense of the torsional energy. This inspired us to fill the intrinsic free space by guest molecules either via supramolecular or covalent bonds or just by physical mixing in order to avoid the increase in torsional energy and to stabilize the structure. This strategy led to complex filled liquid-crystalline matter with high structural control and may in the future be used for the design of organic electronic materials that are easily alignable for device applications.

Lamellar Liquid Crystals of In-Plane Lying Rod-Like Mesogens with Designer Side-Chains: The Case of Sliding versus Locked Layers

The dimensionality of self-assembled nanostructures plays an essential role for their properties and applications. Herein, an understanding of the transition from weakly to strongly coupled layers in soft matter systems is provided involving in-plane organized π-conjugated rods. For this purpose, bolaamphiphilic triblock molecules consisting of a rigid biphenyl core, polar glycerol groups at the ends, and a branched (swallow-tail) or linear alkyl or semiperfluoroalkyl chain in lateral position have been synthesized and investigated. Besides weakly coupled lamellar isotropic (Lam_Iso ), lamellar nematic (Lam_N ) and sliding lamellar smectic phases (Lam_Sm ), a sequence of three distinct types of strongly coupled (correlated) lamellar smectic phases with either centered (c2mm) or non-centered rectangular (p2mm) lattice and an intermediate oblique lattices (p2) were observed depending on chain length, chain branching and degree of chain fluorination. This new sequence is explained by the strengthening of the layer coupling and the competition between energetic packing constraints and the entropic contribution of either longitudinal or tangential fluctuations. This example of directed side chain engineering of small generic model compounds provides general clues for morphological design of two-dimensional and three-dimensionally coupled lamellar systems involving larger π-conjugated molecular rods and molecular or supramolecular polymers, being of actual interest in organic electronics and nanotechnology.

Wide-Range Columnar and Lamellar Photoluminescent Liquid-Crystalline Lanthanide Complexes with Mesogenic 4-Pyridone Derivatives

A series of liquid crystals with various lanthanide ions (Eu^III , Sm^III , and Tb^III ) was designed and prepared starting from the corresponding lanthanide nitrates and N-alkylated 4-pyridone derivatives bearing mesogenic 3,4,5-tris(alkyloxy)benzyl moieties (alkyl=hexyl, octyl, decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, or hexadecyl). These new lanthanidomesogens were investigated for their mesogenic properties by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Their thermal stability was assessed by thermogravimetric analysis. All of these complexes show enantiotropic liquid-crystalline behavior with lamellar (SmA) phases in the case of shorter-chain complexes (C₆ and C₈ ) or hexagonal columnar phases (Col_h ) for complexes with longer alkyl chains (C₁₂ , C₁₄ , and C₁₆ ), which were assigned on the basis of their characteristic textures and XRD studies. For complexes with an intermediate number of carbon atoms in the side chains (C₁₀ ), both a lamellar phase at lower temperatures and a Col_h phase at higher temperatures were evidenced. In the solid state, all these complexes show characteristic emissions assigned to the corresponding lanthanide ion. In addition, the luminescence decay curves showed single-exponential decays with characteristic times in the millisecond range (0.75-0.90 ms for Eu^III , 0.045-0.060 ms for Sm^III , and 0.75-1.05 ms for Tb^III ).

Dicyanamide Salts that Adopt Smectic, Columnar, or Bicontinuous Cubic Liquid-Crystalline Mesophases

Although dicyanamide (i.e., [N(CN)₂ ]^- ) has been commonly used to obtain low-viscosity, halogen-free, room-temperature ionic liquids, liquid-crystalline salts containing such anions have remained virtually unexplored. Here we report a series of amphiphilic dicyanamide salts that, depending on their structures and compositions, adopt smectic, columnar, or bicontinuous cubic thermotropic liquid-crystalline mesophases, even at room temperature in some cases. Their thermal properties were explored by polarized light optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (including evolved gas analysis), and variable-temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Comparison of the thermal phase characteristics of these new liquid-crystalline salts featuring "V-shaped" [N(CN)₂ ]^- anions with those of structural analogues containing [SCN]^- , [BF₄ ]^- , [PF₆ ]^- , or [CF₃ SO₃ ]^- anions indicated that not only the size of the counterion but also its shape should be considered in the development of mesomorphic salts. Collectively, these discoveries may be expected to facilitate the design of thermotropic ionic liquid crystals that form inverted-type bicontinuous cubic and other sophisticated liquid-crystalline phases.

Functional Liquid Crystals towards the Next Generation of Materials

Since the discovery of the liquid-crystalline state in 1888, liquid crystal science has made great advances through fusion with various technologies and disciplines. Recently, new molecular design strategies and new self-assembled structures have been developed as a result of the progress made in synthetic procedures and characterization techniques. Since these liquid crystals exhibit new functions and properties derived from their nanostructures and alignment, a variety of new functions for liquid crystals, such as transport for energy applications, separation for environmental applications, chromism, sensing, electrooptical effects, actuation, and templating have been proposed. This Review presents recent advances of liquid crystals that should contribute to the next generation of materials.

Doping of nematic cyanobiphenyl liquid crystals with mesogen-hybridized magnetic nanoparticles

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) functionalized with (pro-)mesogenic ligands are implemented into a nematic liquid crystal (LC) and studied regarding both colloidal stability and magneto-optical behavior. In this study, the particle surface is specifically engineered to tune the MNP interactions with the LC host. For this purpose, four types of (pro-)mesogenic ligands (ML) are synthesized, which are composed of three structural parts, i.e., a rigid, LC motif (i.e., cyanobiphenyl) and a functional group for nanoparticle binding, both linked via a flexible spacer of different alkyl chain lengths. Electrostatically stabilized CoFe₂O₄ and γ-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles with narrow size distribution and sizes below 3 nm are obtained via co-precipitation and subsequently functionalized to yield MNP@ML nanoparticles. Studies on the behaviour of the MNP@ML nanoparticles in the commercial LC host (i.e., 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB)) in the bulk and in thin films in LC test cells, reveal the initial formation of some heterogeneities after transition from the isotropic to the nematic phase. Homogenous MNP@ML-5CB hybrids with long-term, colloidal stability, however, are obtained after magnetic separation of initially formed particle aggregates. In particular, MLs with carboxy groups and high structural flexibility (i.e., long linker lengths) are shown to be well suited to form stable MNP colloids, allowing for high MNP doping levels. As compared to undoped 5CB, the CoFe₂O₄@MLx-5CB hybrids show an increased sensitivity to the magnetic field, affecting the Fréedericksz transition. The strongest effect, however, is observed in magnetic and electric fields. The coupling of the ultrasmall, spherical MNPs with the LC director in the magnetic field suggests the formation of LC-induced, anisometric MNP clusters.

Optically Active Cubic Liquid Crystalline Phase Made of Achiral Polycatenar Stilbene Derivatives

Achiral stilbene polycatenars forming smectic, columnar or cubic phase depending on the terminal chains length, were studied. The cubic Im3m phase exhibited optical activity originating in twisted face-to-face molecular aggregates. The optical activity of the phase is preserved upon sample crystallization, providing evidence of a transfer of chirality on a molecular level.

Induction of an Infinite Periodic Minimal Surface by Endowing An Amphiphilic Zwitterion with Halogen-Bond Ability

We have designed an amphiphilic zwitterion with an iodine‐substituted imidazolium cation. Although it forms a layered assembly with flat interfaces, the addition of an equimolar amount of bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide results in the formation of a bicontinuous cubic liquid‐crystalline assembly with a primitive‐type infinite periodic minimal surface, where its zwitterionic headgroup sits regularly. IR measurements revealed that halogen bond between the iodine atoms on the imidazolium cation and the anions is involved in its molecular‐assembly behavior. The present results clearly indicate the potential utility of halogen bonding to control the dimensionality and continuity of the ionic/nonionic interface of amphiphiles in bulk and consequent mesophase patterns, which may be a significant new molecular technology for precisely arranging functional molecules on a 3D continuous interfaces.

Liquid-crystalline mesogens based on cyclo[6]aramides: distinctive phase transitions in response to macrocyclic host-guest interactions

Producing macrocyclic mesogens that are responsive to guest encapsulation presents a significant challenge. Cyclo[6]aramides, a type of macrocycle with a hydrogen-bond-constrained backbone, exhibit thermotropic lamellar, discotic nematic, hexagonal, and rectangular columnar mesophases over a considerably wide temperature range, including at room temperature. Additionally, cyclo[6]aramides show unusual mesophase transitions from lamellar to hexagonal columnar phase mediated by macrocyclic host-guest (H-G) interactions between the macrocycles and alkylammonium salts. The phase transition, triggered by an organic guest engaging in H-G interactions with a macrocyclic cavity, provides a novel strategy for manipulating the properties of liquid-crystalline materials. The crystal structure of a homologous cyclo[6]aramide reveals a disk-shaped, near-planar molecular backbone that facilitates intermolecular π-π stacking and leads to columnar assembly.
