Tailoring Carbon Tails of Ligands on Au 52(SR) 32 Nanoclusters Enhances the Near-Infrared Photoluminescence Quantum Yield from 3.8 to 18.3. J Am Chem Soc 2023; 145:26328-26338. Abstract
One of the important factors that determine the photoluminescence (PL) properties of gold nanoclusters pertain to the surface. In this study, four Au52(SR)32 nanoclusters that feature a series of aromatic thiolate ligands (-SR) with different bulkiness at the para-position are synthesized and investigated. The near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence (peaks at 900-940 nm) quantum yield (QY) is largely enhanced with a decrease in the ligand's para-bulkiness. Specifically, the Au52(SR)32 capped with the least bulky p-methylbenzenethiolate (p-MBT) exhibits the highest PLQY (18.3% at room temperature in non-degassed dichloromethane), while Au52 with the bulkiest tert-butylbenzenethiolate (TBBT) only gives 3.8%. The large enhancement of QY with fewer methyl groups on the ligands implies a nonradiative decay via the multiphonon process mediated by C-H bonds. Furthermore, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) comparison of Au52(p-MBT)32 and Au52(TBBT)32 reveals that fewer methyl groups at the para-position lead to a stronger interligand π···π stacking on the Au52 core, thus restricting ligand vibrations and rotations. The emission nature is identified to be phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based on the PL lifetime, 3O2 quenching, and temperature-dependent PL and absorption studies. The 1O2 generation efficiencies for the four Au52(SR)32 NCs follow the same trend as the observed PL performance. Overall, the highly NIR-luminescent Au52(p-MBT)32 nanocluster and the revealed mechanisms are expected to find future applications.

Abstract
It remains a significant challenge to construct an integrated catalyst that combines advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis with clarified mechanism and high performance. Here we show atomically precise CuAg cluster catalysts for CO2 capture and utilization, where two functional units are combined into the clusters: metal and ligand. Due to atomic resolution on total and local structures of such catalysts to be achieved, which disentangles heterogeneous imprecise systems and permits tracing the reaction processes via experiments coupled with theory, site-specific catalysis induced by metal-ligand synergy can be accurately elucidated. The CuAg cluster catalysts exhibit excellent reactivity and recyclability to forge the C-N bonding from CO2 formylation with secondary amines that can make the cluster catalysts more unique compared with typically homogeneous complexes.

Abstract
Photoluminescence (PL) serves as one of the most attractive chemical-physical properties of metal nanoclusters. However, the control over the PL nature of metal nanoclusters as fluorescence or phosphorescence remains challenging. Basically, the PL nature control concerns the transition regulation of excited electrons in nanoclusters from their excited state to the ground state. Up to the present, some cases have been reported on adjusting the PL nature of emissive nanoclusters via different means, including the composition regulation, the isomerization, the aggregation, and the temperature variation. At the same time, theoretical calculations have been performed to thoroughly understand the PL nature transformation of these emissive nanoclusters in terms of their electronic structures and transition pathways. This Concept highlights and reviews the recent progress in controlling the PL nature of emissive nanoclusters as fluorescence or phosphorescence, which hopefully paves the way for fabricating novel nanoclusters or cluster-based nanomaterials with customized PL properties.

Abstract
Synthesis of luminescent metal cluster for selective sensing of specific analyte with detail mechanistic understanding is very important for real world applications as well as for developing new emissive materials. In the present work, we have synthesized L-glutathione stabilized gold (Au-SG) and gold-silver bimetallic (AuAg-SG) clusters under identical experimental conditions with orange red emissive characteristics for both. Detail photo physical analysis reveals that both clusters are phosphorescent in nature with moderate quantum yield of 7% and 19% for Au-SG and AuAg-SG respectively and their excited state lifetime values are in the range of 1-2 μs. While Au-SG cluster showed luminescence quenching response (turn-off) in presence of Fe3+ and Hg2+ ions, AuAg-SG cluster showed turn-off response for Cu2+, Fe3+ and Hg2+, but luminescent enhancement (turn-on) response for Cd2+ ions. The highest detection limit obtained for Cu2+ ion by AuAg-SG cluster is 20 nM while for Cd2+ ion it is 75 nM. From Time Correlated Single Photo Counting (TCSPC) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurements we postulated that except Cd2+, all other metal ions cause aggregation of clusters through ligation with SG ligands while Cd2+ ion does not induce any cluster aggregation but binds to cluster surface atoms. The near constant life time values of both clusters during gradual addition of respective metal ions confirms static quenching/enhancement process through formation of stable ground state adducts.

Abstract
It remains challenging to manipulate the nature of photoluminescence as either fluorescence or phosphorescence for a correlated cluster series. In this work, two correlated nanoclusters, Au5 Ag11 (SR)8 (DPPOE)2 and Pt1 Ag16 (SR)8 (DPPOE)2 with comparable structure features, were synthesized and structurally determined. These two alloy nanoclusters displayed distinct photoluminescent nature-the Au5 Ag11 nanocluster is fluorescent, whereas the Pt1 Ag16 nanocluster is phosphorescent. The decay processes of the excited electrons in these two nanoclusters have been explicitly mapped out by both experimental and theoretical approaches, disclosing the mechanisms of their fluorescence and phosphorescence. Specifically, the metallic compositions of the nanocluster kernels mattered in determining their photoluminescent nature. The results herein provide an intriguing nanomodel that enables us to grasp the origin of photoluminescence at the atomic level, which further paves the way for fabricating novel nanoclusters or cluster-based nanomaterials with customized photophysical properties.

Abstract
Understanding the origin of the photoluminescence (PL) phenomenon in ligand-protected metal nanoclusters is of paramount importance in both fundamental science and practical applications. In this study, we have studied the origin of fluorescence emission of two thiolate-ligand-protected Au28 clusters (Au28(CHT)20 and Au28(TBBT)20) by means of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. Theoretical calculation results show that the ligand shell isomerization induces different ligand motif-to-metal core charge transfers (LMCT) of Au28(TBBT)20 and Au28(CHT)20. Moreover, in Au28(CHT)20, the emission process of S2 → S0 can compete favorably with the internal conversion of S2 → S1. Furthermore, the high quantum yield of Au28(CHT)20 is attributed to its high symmetric structure, which leads to less energy dissipation during the structural relaxation process.

The upconversion quantum yield (UCQY): a review to standardize the measurement methodology, improve comparability, and define efficiency standards. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF ADVANCED MATERIALS 2021; 22:810-848. Abstract
Advancing the upconversion materials field relies on accurate and contrastable photoluminescence efficiency measurements, which are characterised by the absolute upconversion quantum yield (UCQY). However, the methodology for such measurements cannot be extrapolated directly from traditional photoluminescence quantum yield techniques, primarily due to issues that arise from the non-linear behaviour of the UC process. Subsequently, no UCQY standards exist, and significant variations in their reported magnitude can occur between laboratories. In this work, our aim is to provide a path for determining and reporting the most reliable UCQYs possible, by addressing all the effects and uncertainties that influence its value. Here the UCQY standard, at a given excitation power density, is defined under a range of stated experimental conditions, environmental conditions, material properties, and influential effects that have been estimated or corrected for. A broad range of UCQYs reported for various UC materials are scrutinized and categorized based on our assertion of the provided information associated with each value. This is crucial for improved comparability with other types of photoluminescent materials, and in addition, the next generation of UC materials can be built on top of these reliable standards.

Abstract
The change in the valence state of nanocluster can induce remarkable changes in the properties and structure. However, achieving the valence state changes in nanoclusters is still a challenge. In this work, we use Cu2+ as dopant to "oxidize" [Ag62 S12 (SBut )32 ]2+ (4 free electrons) to obtain the new nanocluster: [Ag62-x Cux S12 (SBut )32 ]4+ with 2 free electrons. As revealed by its structure, the [Ag62-x Cux S12 (SBut )32 ]4+ (x=10∼21) has a similar structure to that of [Ag62 S12 (SBut )32 ]2+ precursor and all the Cu atoms occupy the surface site of nanocluster. It's worth noting that with the Cu atoms doping, the [Ag62-x Cux S12 (SBut )32 ]4+ nanocluster is more stable than [Ag62 S12 (SBut )32 ]2+ at higher temperature and in electrochemical cycle. This result has laid a foundation for the subsequent application and exploration. Overall, this work reveals crystals structure of a new Ag-Cu nanocluster and offers a new insight into the electron reduction/oxidation of nanocluster.

Abstract
Bimetallic core-shell nanostructures hold great promise in elucidating the bimetallic synergism. However, it remains a challenge to construct atomically precise core-shell with high-valence active metals on the gold surface. In this work, we report the total structure of a [Au42 Cd40 (SR)52 ]2- core-shell nanocluster and multiple implications. Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) reveals that the structure possesses a two-shelled Au6 @Au36 core and a closed cadmium shell of Cd40 , and the core-shell structure is then protected by 52 thiolate (-SR) ligands. The composition of the nanocluster is further confirmed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). A catalytic test for styrene oxidation and a comparison with relevant nanoclusters reveal the surface effect on the catalytic activity and selectivity.

Abstract
We present a method for atomically precise nanocluster synthesis. As an illustration, we introduced the reducing-ligand induction combined method and synthesized a novel nanocluster, which was determined to be Au28 (SCH2 Ph-t Bu)22 with the same number of gold atoms as existing Au28 (SR)20 nanoclusters but different ligands (hetero-composition-homo-size). Compared with the latter, the former has distinct properties and structures. In particular, a novel kernel evolution pattern is reported, i.e., the quasi-linear growth of Au4 -tetrahedron by sharing one vertex and structural features, including a tritetrahedron kernel with two bridging thiolates and two Au6 (SCH2 Ph-t Bu)6 hexamer chair-like rings on the kernel surface were also first reported, which endow Au28 (SCH2 Ph-t Bu)22 with the best photoluminescence quantum yield among hydrophobic thiolated gold nanoclusters so far, probably due to the enhanced charge transfer from the bi-ring to the kernel via Au-Au bonds.

Abstract
Acetelyenediide (C2 2- ) species have been encapsulated in bimetallic and trimetallic clusters: [(AuL)6 Ag7 (C≡C)3 ](BF4 )7 (2) and [(AuL)6 AgCu6 (C≡C)3 ](BF4 )7 (3), L=phenylbis(2-pyridyl)phosphine (PPhpy2 ). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that they are isostructural and six silver atoms in 2 are replaced with copper in 3. Both clusters have a trefoil skeleton, which can be viewed as three trigonal bipyramidal (LAu-C≡C-AuL)M2 Ag (M=Ag/Cu) motifs sharing a common silver atom. TDDFT calculations showed Cu-doping significantly increases the energy level of (C2 -Cu)-involved occupied orbital, thus inducing interesting transition coupling of dual-emission at low temperature. This work not only provides a strategy for constructing heterometallic clusters, but also shows the prospect for pursuing novel thermochromic luminescent materials by incorporating multi-congeneric metal components.

Abstract
There has been controversy surrounding the roles of the metal core (metal-metal interaction) and the shell (metal-ligand interaction) in photoluminescence of ligand-protected metal nanoclusters. We have discovered aggregation-induced room-temperature phosphorescence of a platinum-thiolate complex and its silver ion inclusion complex (a silver-doped platinum sub-nanocluster). The inclusion of silver ion boosted the photoluminescent quantum yield by 18 times. Photophysical measurements indicate that the rate of nonradiative decay was slower for the silver-doped platinum sub-nanocluster. DFT calculations showed that the LUMO, which had the main contribution from Ag s-orbital and Pt d-orbitals, played a critical role in suppressing the structural distortion at the excited state. This work will hopefully stimulate more research on designing strategies based on molecular orbitals of atomicity-precise luminescent multimetallic nanoclusters.

Abstract
Auration of o-trimethylsilyl arylphosphines leads to the formation of gold and gold-silver clusters with ortho-metalated phosphines displaying 3c-2e Au-C-M bonds (M=Au/Ag). Hexagold clusters [Au6 L4 ](X)2 are obtained by reaction of (L-TMS)AuCl with AgX, whereas reaction with AgX and Ag2 O leads to gold-silver clusters [Au4 Ag2 L4 ](X)2 . Oxo-trigold(I) species [Au3 O]+ were identified as the intermediates in the formation of the silver-doped clusters. Other [Au5 ], [Au4 Ag], and [Au12 Ag4 ] clusters were also obtained. Clusters containing PAu-Au-AuP structural motif display good catalytic activity in the activation of alkynes under homogeneous conditions.

Abstract
The photoexcitation of a triangular silver(I) hydride complex, [Ag3 (μ3 -H)(μ2 -dcpm)3 ](PF6 )2 ([P](PF6 )2 , dcpm=bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)methane), designed with "UV-silent" bis-phosphine ligands, provokes hydride-to-Ag3 single and double electron transfer. The nature of the electronic transitions has been authenticated by absorption and photodissociation spectroscopy in parallel with high-level quantum-chemical computations utilizing the GW method and Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE). Specific photofragments of mass-selected [P]2+ ions testify to charge transfer and competing pathways resulting from the unique [Ag3 (μ3 -H)]2+ scaffold. This structural motif of [P](PF6 )2 has been unequivocally verified by 1 H NMR spectroscopy in concert with DFT and X-ray diffraction structural analysis, which revealed short equilateral Ag-Ag distances (dAgAg =3.08 Å) within the range of argentophilic interactions. The reduced radical cation [P]. + exhibits strong oxophilicity, forming [P+O2 ].+ ,which is a model intermediate for silver oxidation catalysis.

Abstract
Recent advances in the synthetic chemistry of atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) have significantly broadened the accessible sizes and structures. Such particles are well defined and have intriguing properties, thus, they are attractive for catalysis. Especially, those NCs with identical size but different core (or surface) structure provide unique opportunities that allow the specific role of the core and the surface to be mapped out without complication by the size effect. Herein, we summarize recent work with isomeric Aun NCs protected by ligands and isostructural NCs but with different surface ligands. The highlighted work includes catalysis by spherical and rod-shaped Au25 (with different ligands), quasi-isomeric Au28 (SR)20 with different R groups, structural isomers of Au38 (SR)24 (with identical R) and Au38 S2 (SR)20 with body-centred cubic (bcc) structure, and isostructural [Au38 L20 (PPh3 )4 ]2+ (different L). These isomeric and/or isostructural NCs have provided valuable insights into the respective roles of the kernel, surface staples, and the type of ligands on catalysis. Future studies will lead to fundamental advances and development of tailor-made catalysts.

Guest-Triggered Aggregation-Induced Emission in Silver Chalcogenolate Cluster Metal-Organic Frameworks. ADVANCED SCIENCE (WEINHEIM, BADEN-WURTTEMBERG, GERMANY) 2019; 6:1801304. Abstract
Utilizing aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) as ligands has proven to be an effective strategy for constructing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with intense luminescent properties. However, highly luminescent AIEgen-based MOFs with adjustable emission properties are rarely achieved because of the rigid conformation of AIEgens in the crystalline state. Here, a dual-node 3D silver chalcogenolate cluster MOF (1) is designed and synthesized, where the AIE ligand shows relatively flexible and rotatable conformations. The conformations of AIE ligands in 1 are switchable by the absorption/desorption of guest molecules. As a result, 1 exhibited not only intense but also guest molecule switched luminescent properties. More importantly, the switching rate is tunable by using different guest molecules. 1 provides a unique visualized prototype to understand the mechanism of guest-triggered aggregation-induced emission in MOFs.

Abstract
A deep understanding on the luminescence property of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) featured metal nanoclusters (NCs) is highly desired. This paper reports a systematic study on enhancing the luminescence of AIE-featured Au NCs, which is achieved by Ag doping to engineer the size/structure and aggregation states of the AuI -thiolate motifs in the NC shell. Moreover, by prolonging the reaction time, the luminescence of the as-synthesized AuAg NCs could be further tailored from orange to red, which is also due to the variation of the AuI -thiolate motifs of NCs. This study can facilitate a better understanding of this AIE-featured luminescent probe and the design of other synthetic routes for this rising family of functional materials.

Abstract
The weak photoluminescence of silver nanoclusters prevents their broad application as luminescent nanomaterials. Recent experiments, however, have shown that gold doping can significantly enhance the photoluminescence intensity of Ag29 nanoclusters but the molecular and physical origins of this effect remain unknown. Therefore, we have computationally explored the geometric and electronic structures of Ag29 and gold-doped Ag29-x Aux (x=1-5) nanoclusters in the S0 and S1 states. We found that 1) relativistic effects that are mainly due to the Au atoms play an important role in enhancing the fluorescence intensity, especially for highly doped Ag26 Au3 , Ag25 Au4 , and Ag24 Au5 , and that 2) heteronuclear Au-Ag bonds can increase the stability and regulate the fluorescence intensity of isomers of these gold-doped nanoclusters. These novel findings could help design doped silver nanoclusters with excellent luminescence properties.

Polyethyleneimine capped bimetallic Au/Pt nanoclusters are a viable fluorescent probe for specific recognition of chlortetracycline among other tetracycline antibiotics. Mikrochim Acta 2018; 185:294. Abstract
A highly selective method has been developed for the fluorometric determination of chlortetracycline (CTC) among other tetracycline antibiotics (TCs). It is making use of fluorescent Au/Pt nanoclusters (NCs) capped with polyethyleneimine (Au/PtNCs@PEI). The nanoprobe, with a green emission peaking at 512 nm, was synthesized by an environmentally friendly hydrothermal method. The capped NCs have a large Stokes shift (∼150 nm), are insensitive to extreme pH values and high ionic strength, and are excellently photostable under UV irradiation. In the presence of CTC, the fluorescence of the capped NCs is quenched due to aggregation. The effect is also found for tetracycline, oxytetracycline and doxycycline. This shows that sensitive but non-selective detection of such TCs is possible. However, CTC is specifically complexed by Al(III) ions, and this generates a strong fluorescence peaking at 520 nm even though the fluorescence of the capped NCs is fully quenched. Obviously, the effects are caused by CTC only, and this enables CTC to be specifically recognized by an "on-off-on" strategy. Fluorescence increases linearly in the 0.5 to 10 μM CTC concentration range, and the limit of detection is 0.35 μM. The method was successfully applied to the determination of CTC in (spiked) milk, and the recoveries suggest that this fluorescent probe is an effective tool for detecting CTC in foodstuff. Graphical abstract Schematic illustration and photographic images of the luminescence quenching response of Au/Pt nanoclusters (Au/PtNCs) toward chlortetracycline (CTC) (from on to off), and then the recovery upon Al3+ addition (from off to on).

Abstract
Herein we report the synthesis and structure determination of a non-fluorescent Au4 Ag5 (dppm)2 (SAdm)6 (BPh4 ) (dppm=bis(diphenylphosphino)methane and HSAdm=1-adamantane mercaptan) nanocluster in methanol with extremely strong AIE when aggregating to the solid state (i.e., film or crystal). This phenomenon was rarely reported in structural determined noble metal nanoclusters. The extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurement ruled out the hypothesis that the luminescence originated from the structure change in different states. Besides, the crystal structure (determined by X-ray diffraction) revealed that the tightly combined left- and right-handed enantiomers induced the strong restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM), which may have an impact on aggregation-induced emission.

Engineering the Self-Assembly Induced Emission of Cu Nanoclusters by Au(I) Doping. ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES 2017; 9:24899-24907. Abstract
Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and self-assembly induced emission (SAIE) effects have been employed to tune the emission properties of metal nanoclusters (NCs). However, it is still not possible to further enhance the photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) and control the emission colors of the NCs using AIE and SAIE. On the basis of our recent work studying the contribution of Cu(I) defects in the SAIE of Cu NCs, in this article, Au(I) was doped into Cu NC self-assembled nanosheets (NSASs) to construct a more stable Au(I)-centered state. As a result, the PLQYs, emission stability, and tunability of emission colors of the Cu NSASs were significantly improved. Detailed studies reveal that the doped Au(I) induces a Au(I)-Cu(I) metallophilic interaction, which leads to a ligand-to-Cu-Au charge transfer, which facilitates the relaxation of excited electrons via a radiative pathway, thereby enhancing the emission intensity. The charge transfer from Cu to Au lowers the energy, thus leading to the red-shift of PL emission. Au(I) is likely doped into the Cu NSASs rather than in individual NCs, because 0.3% Au doping is enough to alter the emission properties. By mixing Au(I)-doped Cu NSASs with different emission colors (due to different Au doping percentages) as color conversion materials on commercially available 365 nm GaN chips, a white light-emitting diode prototype is fabricated.
