Abstract
Halogen bonding has been established as a promising tool in organocatalysis. Asymmetric processes are nevertheless scarce, and their applications are limited to a few studies applying chiral halogen bond donors. Herein, we combine halogen bonding with asymmetric counteranion-directed catalysis, providing the first highly enantioselective example of such an approach. A strong bidentate iodine(III)-based catalyst with chiral disulfonimides as counteranions is applied in the first asymmetric organocatalysis of the Diels-Alder reaction between cyclopentadiene and trans-β-nitrostyrene, the key step in the synthesis of the drug fencamfamine, which was prepared with high enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Iodine can be considered as the simplest halogen-bond donor. Previous investigations have revealed its remarkable catalytic effect in various reactions. The catalytic activity of iodine can often even compete with that of traditional Lewis acids. So far, iodine was typically used to activate carbonyl derivatives like Michael acceptors. We now demonstrate that iodine can also be used to activate allyl aryl ethers in Claisen rearrangements. The formed ortho-allylic phenols rapidly undergo iodocyclizations to afford dihydrobenzofurans, which are important building blocks for medicinal applications. A comparison with different catalysts further highlights the potential of iodine catalysis for this reaction. Computational and mechanistic investigations provide deeper insights into the underlying non-covalent interactions and their role for the catalysis.

Abstract
Two regioselective, high-yielding one-pot routes to oxygen-bridged cyclic diaryliodonium salts and ortho-aryloxy-substituted acyclic diaryliodonium salts are presented. Starting from easily available ortho-iodo diaryl ethers, complete selectivity in formation of either the cyclic or acyclic product could be achieved by varying the reaction conditions. The complimentary reactivities of these novel ortho-oxygenated iodonium salts were demonstrated through a series of chemoselective arylations under metal-catalyzed and metal-free conditions, to deliver a range of novel, ortho-functionalized diaryl ether derivatives.

Abstract
This article describes the application of N-heterocyclic iod(az)olium salts (NHISs) as highly reactive organocatalysts. A variety of mono- and dicationic NHISs are described and utilized as potent XB-donors in halogen-bond catalysis. They were benchmarked in seven diverse test reactions in which the activation of carbon- and metal-chloride bonds as well as carbonyl and nitro groups was achieved. N-methylated dicationic NHISs rendered the highest reactivity in all investigated catalytic applications with reactivities even higher than all previously described monodentate XB-donors based on iodine(I) and (III) and the strong Lewis acid BF3 .

Abstract
Halogen bonding, the non-covalent interaction of Lewis bases with an electron-deficient region of halogen substituents, received increased attention recently. Consequently, the design and evaluation of numerous halogen-containing species as halogen bond donors have been subject to intense research. More recently, organoiodine compounds at the iodine(III) state have been receiving growing attention in the field. Due to their electronic and structural properties, they provide access to unique binding modes. For this reason, our groups have been involved in the development of such compounds, in the quantification of their halogen bonding strength (through the evaluation of their Lewis acidities), as well as in the evaluation of their activities as catalysts in several model reactions. This account will describe these contributions.

Abstract
In contrast to iodine(I)-based halogen bond donors, iodine(III)-derived ones have only been used as Lewis acidic organocatalysts in a handful of examples, and in all cases they acted in a monodentate fashion. Herein, we report the first application of a bidentate bis(iodolium) salt as organocatalyst in a Michael and a nitro-Michael addition reaction as well as in a Diels-Alder reaction that had not been activated by noncovalent organocatalysts before. In all cases, the performance of this bidentate XB donor distinctly surpassed the one of arguably the currently strongest iodine(I)-based organocatalyst. Bidentate coordination to the substrate was corroborated by a structural analysis and by DFT calculations of the transition states. Overall, the catalytic activity of the bis(iodolium) system approaches that of strong Lewis acids like BF3 .

Abstract
Herein we report on the umpolung of Morita-Baylis-Hillman type intermediates and application to the α-functionalization of enone C-H bonds. This reaction gives direct access to α-chloro-enones, 1,2-diketones and α-tosyloxy-enones. The latter are important intermediates for cross-coupling reaction and, to the best of our knowledge, cannot be made in a single step from enones in any other way. The proposed mechanism is supported by spectroscopic studies. The key initial step involves conjugate attack of an amine (DABCO or pyridine), likely assisted by hypervalent iodine acting as a Lewis acid leading to formation of an electrophilic β-ammonium-enolonium species. Nucleophilic attack by acetate, tosylate, or chloride anion is followed by base induced elimination of the ammonium species to give the noted products. Hydrolysis of α-acetoxy-enones lead to formation of 1,2-diketones. The α-tosyl-enones participate in Negishi coupling reactions under standard conditions.

Abstract
In recent years, the non-covalent interaction of halogen bonding (XB) has found increasing application in organocatalysis. However, reports of the activation of metal-ligand bonds by XB have so far been limited to a few reactions with elemental iodine or bromine. Herein, we present the activation of metal-halogen bonds by two classes of inert halogen bond donors and the use of the resulting activated complexes in homogenous gold catalysis. The only recently explored class of iodolium derivatives were shown to be effective activators in two test reactions and their activity could be modulated by blocking of the Lewis acidic sites. Bis(benzimidazolium)-based halogen bonding activators provided even more rapid conversion, while the non-iodinated reference compound showed little activity. The role of halogen bonding in the activation of metal-halogen bonds was further investigated by NMR experiments and DFT calculations, which support the mode of activation occurring via halogen bonding.

Abstract
Even though halogen bonding-the noncovalent interaction between electrophilic halogen substituents and Lewis bases-has now been established in molecular recognition and catalysis, its use in enantioselective processes is still very rarely explored. Herein, we present the synthesis of chiral bidentate halogen-bond donors based on two iodoimidazolium units with rigidly attached chiral sidearms. With these Lewis acids, chiral recognition of a racemic diamine is achieved in NMR studies. DFT calculations support a 1:1 interaction of the halogen-bond donor with both enantiomers and indicate that the chiral recognition is based on a different spatial orientation of the Lewis bases in the halogen-bonded complexes. In addition, moderate enantioselectivity is achieved in a Mukaiyama aldol reaction with a preorganized variant of the chiral halogen-bond donor. This represents the first case in which asymmetric induction was realized with a pure halogen-bond donor lacking any additional active functional groups.

Abstract
Equilibrium constants for the associations of 17 diaryliodonium salts Ar2I+X- with 11 different Lewis bases (halide ions, carboxylates, p-nitrophenolate, amines, and tris(p-anisyl)phosphine) have been investigated by titrations followed by photometric or conductometric methods as well as by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) in acetonitrile at 20 °C. The resulting set of equilibrium constants KI covers 6 orders of magnitude and can be expressed by the linear free-energy relationship lg KI = sI LAI + LBI, which characterizes iodonium ions by the Lewis acidity parameter LAI, as well as the iodonium-specific affinities of Lewis bases by the Lewis basicity parameter LBI and the susceptibility sI. Least squares minimization with the definition LAI = 0 for Ph2I+ and sI = 1.00 for the benzoate ion provides Lewis acidities LAI for 17 iodonium ions and Lewis basicities LBI and sI for 10 Lewis bases. The lack of a general correlation between the Lewis basicities LBI (with respect to Ar2I+) and LB (with respect to Ar2CH+) indicates that different factors control the thermodynamics of Lewis adduct formation for iodonium ions and carbenium ions. Analysis of temperature-dependent equilibrium measurements as well as ITC experiments reveal a large entropic contribution to the observed Gibbs reaction energies for the Lewis adduct formations from iodonium ions and Lewis bases originating from solvation effects. The kinetics of the benzoate transfer from the bis(4-dimethylamino)-substituted benzhydryl benzoate Ar2CH-OBz to the phenyl(perfluorophenyl)iodonium ion was found to follow a first-order rate law. The first-order rate constant kobs was not affected by the concentration of Ph(C6F5)I+ indicating that the benzoate release from Ar2CH-OBz proceeds via an unassisted SN1-type mechanism followed by interception of the released benzoate ions by Ph(C6F5)I+ ions.

Abstract
Chalcogen bonding is the non-covalent interaction between Lewis acidic chalcogen substituents and Lewis bases. Herein, we present the first application of dicationic tellurium-based chalcogen bond donors in the nitro-Michael reaction between trans-β-nitrostyrene and indoles. This also constitutes the first activation of nitro derivatives by chalcogen bonding (and halogen bonding). The catalysts showed rate accelerations of more than a factor of 300 compared to strongly Lewis acidic hydrogen bond donors. Several comparison experiments, titrations, and DFT calculations support a chalcogen-bonding-based mode of activation of β-nitrostyrene.

Abstract
The structures of the three para-substituted halotetrafluoropyridines with chlorine, bromine, and iodine have been determined in the solid state (X-ray diffraction). The structures of these compounds and that of pentafluoropyridine were also determined in the gas phase (electron diffraction). Structures in the solid state of the bromine and iodine derivatives exhibit halogen bonding as a structure-determining motif. On the way to an investigation of halogen bond formation of halotetrafluoropyridines in the solid state with the stronger Lewis base pyridine, co-crystals of benzene adducts were investigated to gain an understanding of the influence of aryl-aryl interactions. These co-crystals showed halogen bonding only for the two heavier halotetrafluoropyridines. In the pyridine co-crystals halogen bonding was observed for all three para-halotetrafluoropyridines. The formation of homodimers and heterodimers with pyridine is also supported by quantum-chemical calculations of electron density topologies and natural bond orbitals.

Abstract
The development of group 15 Lewis acids is an area of active investigation that has led to numerous advances in anion sensing and catalysis. While phosphorus has drawn considerable attention, emerging research shows that organoantimony(III) reagents may also act as potent Lewis acids. Comparison of the properties of SbPh3 , Sb(C6 F5 )3 , and SbArF 3 with those of their tetrachlorocatecholate analogues SbPh3 Cat, Sb(C6 F5 )3 Cat, and SbArF 3 Cat (Cat=o-O2 C6 Cl4 , ArF =3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 ) demonstrates that the Lewis acidity of electron deficient organoantimony(III) reagents can be readily enhanced by oxidation to the +V state-as verified by binding studies, organic reaction catalysis, and computational studies. The results are rationalized by explaining that oxidation of the antimony center leads to a lowering of the accepting σ* orbital and a deeper carving of the associated σ-hole.
