The Thermal Rearrangement of an NHC‐Ligated 3‐Benzoborepin to an NHC‐Boranorcaradiene

Rethinking Borole Cycloaddition Reactivity

Boroles are attracting broad interest for their myriad and diverse applications, including in synthesis, small molecule activation and functional materials. Their properties and reactivity are closely linked to the cyclic conjugated diene system, which has been shown to participate in cycloaddition reactions, such as the Diels‐Alder reaction with alkynes. The reaction steps leading to boranorbornadienes, borepins and tricyclic boracyclohexenes from the thermal reaction of boroles with alkynes are seemingly well understood as judged from the literature. Herein, we question the long‐established mechanistic picture of pericyclic rearrangements by demonstrating that seven‐membered borepins (i. e., heptaphenylborepin and two derivatives substituted with a thienyl and chloride substituent on boron) exist in a dynamic equilibrium with the corresponding bicyclic boranorbornadienes, the direct Diels‐Alder products, but are not isolable products from the reactions. Heating gradually converts the isomeric mixtures into fluorescent tricyclic boracyclohexenes, the most stable isomers in the series. Results from mechanistic DFT calculations reveal that the tricyclic compounds derive from the boranorbornadienes and not the borepins, which were previously believed to be intermediates in purely pericyclic processes.

Divergent and Multi-Stage Photoisomerization of Four-Coordinated Boron Compounds with a Naphthyl-Pyridyl/Thiazolyl Backbone

Examination of the photoreactivity of a new class of N,C-chelate organoboron compounds, including a series of unsymmetrically substituted boron molecules, B(naph-pyridyl)(Ar¹ )(Ar² ) and B(naph-thiazolyl)(Ar¹ )(Ar² ), led to the discovery of new and divergent photothermal isomerization phenomena. These include the clean and regioselective photoisomerization by unsymmetrical boron, forming borepin isomers, some of which further isomerize to the corresponding boratanorcaradiene diastereomer pairs as a result of the generation of two chiral centers. Significantly, the boratanorcaradienes involving a 3-thienyl substituent on boron were found to thermally convert to BN-fluoranthene annulated borapentalene via an unprecedented reversible boratacyclopropane-boratacyclopentene rearrangement. Changing the pyridyl donor to a thiazolyl donor on the boron was found to provide the B(naph-thiazolyl)(Mes)₂ compounds with a distinct new photoisomerization pathway-instead of borepin, forming new blue fluorescent polycyclic azaborinine species. This work illustrates the richness and complexity of boron photochemistry.

New Radical Borylation Pathways for Organoboron Synthesis Enabled by Photoredox Catalysis

Radical borylation using N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-BH₃ complexes as boryl radical precursors has emerged as an important synthetic tool for organoboron assembly. However, the majority of reported methods are limited to reaction modes involving carbo- and/or hydroboration of specific alkenes and alkynes. Moreover, the generation of NHC-boryl radicals relies principally on hydrogen atom abstraction with the aid of radical initiators. A distinct radical generation method is reported, as well as the reaction pathways of NHC-boryl radicals enabled by photoredox catalysis. NHC-boryl radicals are generated via a single-electron oxidation and subsequently undergo cross-coupling with the in-situ-generated radical anions to yield gem-difluoroallylboronates. A photoredox-catalyzed radical arylboration reaction of alkenes was achieved using cyanoarenes as arylating components from which elaborated organoborons were accessed. Mechanistic studies verified the oxidative formation of NHC-boryl radicals through a single-electron-transfer pathway.
