Creation of High‐Performance Heterogeneous Photocatalysts by Controlling Ligand Desorption and Particle Size of Gold Nanocluster

Staggered Assembly of a Dimeric Au13 Cluster: Impacts on Coupling of Geometric Isomerism

The specific states of aggregation of metal atoms in sub-nanometer-sized gold clusters are related to the different quantum confinement volumes of electrons, leading to novel optical and electronic properties. These volumes can be tuned by changing the relative positions of the gold atoms to generate isomers. Studying the isomeric gold core and the electron coupling between the basic units is fundamentally important for nanoelectronic devices and luminescence; however, appropriate cases are lacking. In this study, the structure of the first staggered di-superatomic Au25 -S was solved using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The optical properties of Au25 -S were studied by comparing with eclipsed Au25 -E. From Au25 -E to Au25 -S, changes in the electronic structures occurred, resulting in significantly different optical absorptions originating from the coupling between the two Au13 modules. Au25 -S shows a longer electron decay lifetime of 307.7 ps before populating the lowest triplet emissive state, compared to 1.29 ps for Au25 -E. The experimental and theoretical results show that variations in the geometric isomerism lead to distinct photophysical processes owing to isomerism-dependent electronic coupling. This study offers new insights into the connection between the geometric isomerism of nanosized building blocks and the optical properties of their assemblies, opening new possibilities for constructing function-specific nanomaterials.

Promoting Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction by Tuning the Properties of Cocatalysts

Suppressing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is an essential measure toward addressing global warming. Specifically, the photocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CRR) is an effective strategy because it affords the conversion of CO₂ into useful carbon feedstocks by using sunlight and water. However, the practical application of photocatalyst-promoting CRR (CRR photocatalysts) requires significant improvement of their conversion efficiency. Accordingly, extensive research is being conducted toward improving semiconductor photocatalysts, as well as cocatalysts that are loaded as active sites on the photocatalysts. In this review, we summarize recent research and development trends in the improvement of cocatalysts, which have a significant impact on the catalytic activity and selectivity of photocatalytic CRR. We expect that the advanced knowledge provided on the improvement of cocatalysts for CRR in this review will serve as a general guideline to accelerate the development of highly efficient CRR photocatalysts.

Cadmium-Doped and Pincer Ligand-Modified Gold Nanocluster for Catalytic KA2 Reaction

A gold nanocluster Au₁₇ Cd₂ (PNP)₂ (SR)₁₂ (PNP=2,6-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine, SR=4-MeOPhS) consisting of an icosahedral Au₁₃ kernel, two Au₂ CdS₆ staple motifs, and two PNP pincer ligands has been designed, synthesized and well characterized. This cadmium and PNP pincer ligand co-modified gold nanocluster showed high catalytic efficiency in the KA² reaction, featuring high TON, mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope as well as catalyst recyclability. Comparison of the catalytic performance between Au₁₇ Cd₂ (PNP)₂ (SR)₁₂ and the structurally similar single cadmium (or PNP) modified gold nanoclusters demonstrates that the co-existence of the cadmium and PNP on the surface is crucial for the high catalytic activity of the gold nanocluster. This work would be enlightening for developing efficient catalysts for cascade reactions and discovering the catalytic potential of metal nanoclusters in organic transformations.

Fluorescence or Phosphorescence? The Metallic Composition of the Nanocluster Kernel Does Matter

It remains challenging to manipulate the nature of photoluminescence as either fluorescence or phosphorescence for a correlated cluster series. In this work, two correlated nanoclusters, Au₅ Ag₁₁ (SR)₈ (DPPOE)₂ and Pt₁ Ag₁₆ (SR)₈ (DPPOE)₂ with comparable structure features, were synthesized and structurally determined. These two alloy nanoclusters displayed distinct photoluminescent nature-the Au₅ Ag₁₁ nanocluster is fluorescent, whereas the Pt₁ Ag₁₆ nanocluster is phosphorescent. The decay processes of the excited electrons in these two nanoclusters have been explicitly mapped out by both experimental and theoretical approaches, disclosing the mechanisms of their fluorescence and phosphorescence. Specifically, the metallic compositions of the nanocluster kernels mattered in determining their photoluminescent nature. The results herein provide an intriguing nanomodel that enables us to grasp the origin of photoluminescence at the atomic level, which further paves the way for fabricating novel nanoclusters or cluster-based nanomaterials with customized photophysical properties.

Electropolymerization of Metal Clusters Establishing a Versatile Platform for Enhanced Catalysis Performance

Atomically precise metal clusters are attractive as highly efficient catalysts, but suffer from continuous efficiency deactivation in the catalytic process. Here, we report the development of an efficient strategy that enhances catalytic performance by electropolymerization (EP) of metal clusters into hybrid materials. Based on carbazole ligand protection, three polymerized metal-cluster hybrid materials, namely Poly-Cu₁₄ cba, Poly-Cu₆ Au₆ cbz and Poly-Cu₆ Ag₄ cbz, were prepared. Compared with isolated metal clusters, metal clusters immobilizing on a biscarbazole network after EP significantly improved their electron-transfer ability and long-term recyclability, resulting in higher catalytic performance. As a proof-of-concept, Poly-Cu₁₄ cba was evaluated as an electrocatalyst for reducing nitrate (NO₃ ^- ) to ammonia (NH₃ ), which exhibited ≈4-fold NH₃ yield rate and ≈2-fold Faraday efficiency enhancement compared to that of Cu₁₄ cba with good durability. Similarly, Poly-Cu₆ Au₆ cbz showed 10 times higher photocatalytic efficiency towards chemical warfare simulants degradation than the cluster counterpart.

Rapid detoxification of Microcystin-LR by selective catalytic hydrogenation of the Adda moiety using TiO2-supported Pd catalysts

The hepatotoxicity of Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is mainly caused by its Adda moiety. In this study, we used TiO₂-supported Pd catalysts to selectively hydrogenate the CC bonds in the Adda moiety, achieving rapid detoxification of MC-LR in water under ambient conditions. MC-LR was removed within 5 min by catalytic hydrogenation on Pd(1.0)/TiO₂ with a catalyst dosage normalized rate constant of 1.3 × 10^-2 L mg_cat^-1 min^-1, significantly more efficient than other catalytic treatment methods. The reactions proceeded in a highly selective manner towards catalytic hydrogenation at the CC bond of the Mdha moiety and subsequently the conjugated double bond of the Adda moiety, yielding two intermediates and one final product. Upon catalytic hydrogenation for 30 min on Pd(0.07)/TiO₂, the toxicity of MC-LR (assessed by protein phosphatase 2A activity assay) drastically decreased by 90.8%, demonstrating effective detoxification. The influence of catalyst support, Pd content, initial MC-LR concentration, reaction pH, and catalytic stability were examined. Surface adsorption and the cationic Pd played a crucial role in the reaction kinetics. Our results suggest that catalytic hydrogenation is a highly effective and safe strategy for detoxifying MC-LR by selective reactions.
