Abiotic Methane Production Driven by Ubiquitous Non-Fenton-Type Reactive Oxygen Species

Abiotic CH4 production driven by Fenton-type reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been confirmed to be an indispensable component of the atmospheric CH4 budget. While the chemical reactions independent of Fenton chemistry to ROS are ubiquitous in nature, it remains unknown whether the produced ROS can drive abiotic CH4 production. Here, we first demonstrated the abiotic CH4 production at the soil-water interface under illumination. Leveraging this finding, polymeric carbon nitrides (CNx) as a typical analogue of natural geobattery material and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a natural methyl donor were used to unravel the underlying mechanisms. We revealed that the ROS, photocatalytically produced by CNx, can oxidize DMSO into CH4 with a high selectivity of 91.5 %. Such an abiotic CH4 production process was further expanded to various non-Fenton-type reaction systems, such as electrocatalysis, pyrocatalysis and sonocatalysis. This work provides insights into the geochemical cycle of abiotic CH4, and offers a new route to CH4 production via integrated energy development.

Thermodynamic Analysis of Silk Fibroin-Graphite Hybrid Materials and Their Morphology

Silk fibroin (SF) is a β-sheet-rich protein that is responsible for the remarkable tensile strength of silk. In addition to its mechanical properties, SF is biocompatible and biodegradable, making it an attractive candidate for use in biotic/abiotic hybrid materials. A pairing of particular interest is the use of SF with graphene-based nanomaterials (GBNs). The properties of this interface drive the formation of well-ordered nanostructures and can improve the electronic properties of the resulting hybrid. It was previously demonstrated that SF can form lamellar nanostructures in the presence of graphite; however, the equilibrium morphology and associated driving interactions are not fully understood. In this study, we characterize these interactions between SF and SF lamellar with graphite using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and umbrella sampling (US). We find that SF lamellar nanostructures have strong orientational and spatial preferences on graphite that are driven by the hydrophobic effect, destabilizing solvent-protein interactions and stabilizing protein-protein and protein-graphite interactions. Finally, we show how careful consideration of these underlying interactions can be applied to rationally modify the nanostructure morphology.

Dual-functional DNAzyme powered CRISPR-Cas12a sensor for ultrasensitive and high-throughput detection of Pb2+ in freshwater

Freshwater lead pollution has posed severe threat to the environment and human health, underscoring the urgent necessity for accurate and user-friendly detection methods. Herein, we introduce a novel Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR-Cas) sensor for highly sensitive Pb2+ detection. To accomplish this, we designed a dual-functional deoxyribozyme (df-DNAzyme) probe that functions as an activator for the CRISPR-Cas12a system while also recognizing Pb2+. The df-DNAzyme probe was subsequently combined with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to fabricate a DNAzyme/AuNP nanoprobe, facilitating the activation of CRISPR-Cas12a in a one-to-multiple manner. Upon exposure to Pb2+, the df-DNAzyme is cleaved, causing disintegration of the DNAzyme/AuNP nanoprobe from magnetic beads. The degraded DNAzyme/AuNP containing multiple double-stranded DNA activators efficiently triggers CRISPR-Cas12a activity, initiating cleavage of fluorescence-quenched reporter DNA and generating amplified signals accordingly. The amplified fluorescence signal is accurately quantified using a quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) instrument capable of measuring 96 or 384 samples simultaneously at the microliter scale. This technique demonstrates ultra-sensitive detection capability for Pb2+ at concentrations as low as 1 pg/L within a range from 1 pg/L to 10 μg/L, surpassing limits set by World Health Organization (WHO) and United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) guidelines. This study offers an ultrasensitive and high-throughput method for the detection of Pb2+ in freshwater, thereby advancing a novel approach towards the development of precise and convenient techniques for detecting harmful contaminants.

Build-in electric field in CuWO4/covalent organic frameworks S-scheme photocatalysts steer boosting charge transfer for photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline porous materials with enormous potential for realizing solar-driven CO₂-to-fuel conversion, yet the sluggish transfer/separation of photoinduced electrons and holes remains a compelling challenge. Herein, a step (S)-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst (CuWO₄-COF) was rationally fabricated by a thermal annealing method for boosting CO₂ conversion to CO. The optimal CuWO₄/COF composite sample, integrating 10 wt% CuWO₄ with an olefin (C═C) linked COF (TTCOF), achieved a remarkable gas-solid phase CO yield as high as 7.17 ± 0.35 μmol g^-1h^-1 under visible light irradiation, which was significantly higher than the pure COF (1.6 ± 0.29 μmol g^-1h^-1). The enhanced CO₂ conversion rate could be attributable to the interface engineering effect and the formation of internal electric field (IEF) directing from TTCOF to CuWO₄ according to the theoretical calculation and experimental results, which also proves the electrons transfer from TTCOF to CuWO₄ upon hybridization. In addition, driven by the IEF, the photoinduced electrons can be steered from CuWO₄ to TTCOF under visible light irradiation as well-elucidated by in-situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, verifying the S-scheme charge transfer pathway over CuWO₄/COF composite heterojunctions, which greatly foster the photoreduction activity of CO₂. The preparation technique of the S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst in this study provides a paradigmatic protocol for photocatalytic solar fuel generation.

Complete pentachlorophenol biodegradation in a dual-working electrode bioelectrochemical system: Performance and functional microorganism identification

Bioelectrochemical system (BES) can effectively promote the reductive dechlorination of chlorophenols (CPs). However, the complete degradation of CPs with sequential dechlorination and mineralization processes has rarely achieved from the BES. Here, a dual-working electrode BES was constructed and applied for the complete degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP). Combined with DNA-stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP), the biofilms attached on the anodic and cathodic electrode in the BES were analyzed to explore the dechlorinating and mineralizing microorganisms. Results showed that PCP removal efficiency in the dual-working BES (84% for 21 days) was 4.1 and 4.7 times higher than those of conventional BESs with a single anodic or cathodic working electrode, respectively. Based on DNA-SIP and high-throughput sequencing analysis, the cathodic working electrode harbored the potential dechlorinators (Comamonas, Pseudomonas, Methylobacillus, and Dechlorosoma), and the anodic working enriched the potential intermediate mineralizing bacteria (Comamonas, Stenotrophomonas, and Geobacter), indicating that PCP could be completely degraded under the synergetic effect of these functional microorganisms. Besides, the potential autotrophic functional bacteria that might be involved in the PCP dechlorination were also identified by SIP labeled with ¹³C-NaHCO₃. Our results proved that the dual-working BES could accelerate the complete degradation of PCP and enrich separately the functional microbial consortium for the PCP dechlorination and mineralization, which has broad potential for bioelectrochemical techniques in the treatment of wastewater contaminated with CPs or other halogenated organic compounds.

Solar-driven methanogenesis with ultrahigh selectivity by turning down H2 production at biotic-abiotic interface

Integration of methanogens with semiconductors is an effective approach to sustainable solar-driven methanogenesis. However, the H₂ production rate by semiconductors largely exceeds that of methanogen metabolism, resulting in abundant H₂ as side product. Here, we report that binary metallic active sites (namely, NiCu alloys) are incorporated into the interface between CdS semiconductors and Methanosarcina barkeri. The self-assembled Methanosarcina barkeri-NiCu@CdS exhibits nearly 100% CH₄ selectivity with a quantum yield of 12.41 ± 0.16% under light illumination, which not only exceeds the reported biotic-abiotic hybrid systems but also is superior to most photocatalytic systems. Further investigation reveal that the Ni-Cu-Cu hollow sites in NiCu alloys can directly supply hydrogen atoms and electrons through photocatalysis to the Methanosarcina barkeri for methanogenesis via both extracellular and intracellular hydrogen cycles, effectively turning down the H₂ production. This work provides important insights into the biotic-abiotic hybrid interface, and offers an avenue for engineering the methanogenesis process.
