Abstract
Constructing chemical bonds under green sustainable conditions has drawn attention from environmental and economic perspectives. The dissociation of (hetero)aryl-halide bonds is a crucial step of most arylations affording (hetero)arene derivatives. Herein, we summarize the (hetero)aryl halides activation enabling the direct (hetero)arylation of trapping reagents and construction of highly functionalized (hetero)arenes under benign conditions. The strategies for the activation of aryl iodides are classified into (a) hypervalent iodoarene activation followed by functionalization under thermal/photochemical conditions, (b) aryl-I bond dissociation in the presence of bases with/without organic catalysts and promoters, (c) photoinduced aryl-I bond dissociation in the presence/absence of organophotocatalysts, (d) electrochemical activation of aryl iodides by direct/indirect electrolysis mediated by organocatalysts and mediators acting as electron shuttles, and (e) electrophotochemical activation of aryl iodides mediated by redox-active organocatalysts. These activation modes result in aryl iodides exhibiting diverse reactivity as formal aryl cations/radicals/anions and aryne precursors. The coupling of these reactive intermediates with trapping reagents leads to the facile and selective formation of C-C and C-heteroatom bonds. These ecofriendly, inexpensive, and functional group-tolerant activation strategies offer green alternatives to transition metal-based catalysis.

Abstract
Advancements in fine chemical synthesis and drug discovery continuously demand the development of new and more efficient catalytic systems. In this regard, numerous transition metal-based catalysts have been developed and successfully applied in industrial processes. However, the need for innovative catalyst systems to further enhance the efficiency of chemical transformations and industrial applications persists. Metal nanoclusters (NCs) represent a distinct class of ultra-small nanoparticles (<3 nm) characterized by a precise number of metal atoms coordinated with a defined number of ligands. This structure confers abundant unsaturated active sites and unique electronic and optical properties, setting them apart from conventional nanoparticles or bulk metals. The well-defined structure and monodisperse nature of NCs make them particularly attractive for catalytic applications. Among these, copper-based nanoclusters have emerged as versatile and sustainable catalysts for challenging organic bond-forming reactions. Their unique properties, including natural abundance, accessible oxidation states, diverse ligand architectures, and strong photophysical characteristics, contribute to their growing prominence in this field. In this review, we discuss the photocatalytic activities of Cu-based nanoclusters, focusing on their applications in cross-coupling reactions (C-C and C-N), click reactions, multicomponent couplings, and oxidation reactions.

Abstract
Cysteine plays a crucial role in the development of an efficient copper-catalyst system, where its thiol group serves as a strong anchoring site for metal coordination. By immobilizing copper onto cysteine-modified, polydopamine-coated magnetite particles, this advanced catalytic platform exhibits exceptional stability and catalytic activity. Chemical modification of the polydopamine (PDA) surface with cysteine enhances copper salt immobilization, leading to the formation of the Fe3O4@PDA-Cys@Cu platform. This system was evaluated in palladium-free, copper-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling reactions, effectively catalyzing the coupling of terminal acetylenes with aryl halides. Additionally, the Fe3O4@PDA-Cys@Cu platform was employed in click reactions, confirming the enhanced catalytic efficiency due to increased copper content. The reusability of the platform was further investigated, demonstrating improved performance, especially in recyclability tests in click reaction, making it a promising candidate for sustainable heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract
Sonogashira coupling is a reaction of aryl/vinyl halides with terminal alkynes. It is used for the synthesis of conjugated enynes. Generally, copper (Cu) is required as a mediator for this reaction. It requires a long reaction time, high catalyst loading, or expensive ligands. Recently, homogeneous, heterogeneous, and nanocatalysts have been developed using organosulphur and organoselenium compounds as building blocks. Preformed complexes of metals with organosulphur and organoselenium ligands are used for homogeneous catalysis. Heterogeneous catalytic systems have also been developed using Cu, Pd, and Ni as metals. The nanocatalytic systems (synthesized using such ligands) include copper selenides and stabilized palladium(0) nanospecies. This article aims to cover the developments in the field of the processes and techniques used so far to generate catalytically relevant organic ligands having sulphur or selenium donor sites, the utility of such ligands in the syntheses of homogeneous, heterogeneous, and nanocatalytic systems, and critical analysis of their application in the catalysis of this coupling reaction. The results of catalysis are analyzed in terms of the effects of the S/Se donor, halogen atom of aryl halide, the effect of the presence/absence of electron-withdrawing or electron-donating groups or substituents on the aromatic ring of haloarenes/substituted phenylacetylenes, as well as the position (ortho or para) of the substitution. Substrate scope is discussed for all the kinds of catalysis. The supremacy of heterogeneous and nanocatalytic systems indicates promising future prospects.

Abstract
Catalytic cross-coupling between aryl halides and alkynes is considered an extremely important organic transformation (popularly known as the Sonogashira coupling) and it requires a transition metal-based catalyst. Accomplishing such transformation without any transition metal-based catalyst in the absence of any external stimuli such as heat, photoexcitation or cathodic current is highly challenging. This work reports transition-metal-free cross-coupling between aryl halides and alkynes synthesizing a rich library of internal alkynes without any external stimuli. A chemically double-reduced phenalenyl (PLY)-based molecule with the super-reducing property was employed for single electron transfer to activate aryl halides generating reactive aryl radicals, which subsequently react with alkyne. This protocol covers not only various types of aryl, heteroaryl and polyaryl halides but also applies to a large variety of aromatic alkynes at room temperature. With a versatile substrate scope successfully tested on more than 75 entries, this radical-mediated pathway has been explained by several control experiments. All the key reactive intermediates have been characterized with spectroscopic evidence. Detailed DFT calculations have been instrumental in portraying the mechanistic pathway. Furthermore, we have successfully extended this transition-metal-free catalytic strategy for the first time towards solvent-free cross-coupling between solid aryl halide and alkyne substrates.

Abstract
Sonogashira coupling is one of the Nobel reactions discovered in 1975 to form a C-C bond using palladium and copper as co-catalysts. Incorporating alkyne functionalities either in macro or micro molecules by using this Sonogashira reaction has already proven its viability and relevance in the sphere of synthetic chemistry. While aiming for sustainable chemistry, in recent years, visible light photoredox catalysts have appeared as an advanced tool in this regard. In this review, we aim to portray a comprehensive summary of modern visible light photo redox catalyzed Sonogashira reaction, which will leave space for the readers to rethink alternative strategies to conduct the Sonogashira reaction. This review briefly describes the implementation of various metal-based nanomaterial photocatalysts, developing either copper or palladium-free photocatalytic methods, and organo-photolytic and bioinspired photocatalysts for the Sonogashira coupling reactions. Besides, this review also gives a concise overview of the mechanistic aspects and highlights selective examples for substrate scope.

Abstract
Two supported noble metal species, gold and palladium anchored on an ionic liquid-modified Fe-based metal-organic framework (MOF), were successfully synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TEM, XPS, SEM, EDX, and elemental mapping. The ionic liquid post-modified MOF was used for anchoring Au or Pd at ppm levels, and the resulting materials were employed as catalysts in the reduction of nitrophenol isomers, dyes, and Sonogashira-Hagihara reactions. Using the Au@Fe-MOF-IL catalyst, reduction of nitrophenol isomers, as well as the reductive degradation of dyes, e.g., methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and methyl red (MR) were performed efficiently in water. On the other hand, Pd@Fe-MOF-IL was used as an effective catalyst in the Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling reaction of aryl iodides and bromides using very low amounts of Pd. These catalysts were recycled and reused for several runs without deteriorating remarkably in catalytic performance.

Abstract
Nickel has emerged as a desirable substitute for palladium in Sonogashira coupling reactions due to its abundance, less toxicity and high catalytic activity. Ni complexes have been developed to catalyse C(sp)-C(sp2) and C(sp)-C(sp3) Sonogashira couplings that find applications in the synthesis and modifications of biologically relevant molecules. This review focuses on the catalytic potential and mechanistic details of various Ni complexes employed in the Sonogashira coupling. These include homogeneous catalytic systems with Ni-phosphorus and Ni-nitrogen catalysts, ligand-free catalysts, and carbonylative coupling strategies. Various heterogeneous catalytic systems using supported Ni complexes, Ni nanoparticles and Pd-Ni bimetallic catalysts have also been discussed. This is the first review reported so far dealing exclusively with Ni-catalysed Sonogashira coupling reactions. This review illustrates the current strategies and potential of Ni-catalysed Sonogashira coupling reactions in both homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, and covers the literature up to 2020.

Abstract
3d transition metals-catalyzed C-H bond functionalizations represent nowadays an important tool in organic synthesis, appearing as the most promising alternative to cross-coupling reactions. Among 3d transition metals, iron found widespread application due to its availability and benign nature, and it was established as an efficient catalyst in organic synthesis. In this context, the use of ortho-orientating directing groups (DGs) turned out to be necessary for promoting selective iron-catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions. Very recently, triazoles DGs were demonstrated to be more than an excellent alternative to the commonly employed 8-aminoquinoline (AQ) DG, as a result of their modular synthesis as well as the mild reaction conditions applied for their removal. In addition, their tunable geometry and electronics allowed for new unprecedented reactivities in iron-catalyzed C-H activation methodologies that will be summarized within this review.

Abstract
In the quest for efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for Sonogashira coupling reactions, a PEG-OMe (Methoxy Polyene Glycol) - mediated method was developed to immobilize Pd/Cu bimetallic nanoparticles on activated carbon (AC). Catalytic experiments showed that Pd/Cu@AC prepared in a PEG-OMe 500 had the highest activity. The morphology and composition of the catalyst were determined, and the identified crystallized and heterometallic nanoparticles of Pd/Cu were essential for an efficient catalytic cycle. The Pd/Cu@AC catalyst was successfully used in Sonogashira reactions (21 examples) including with aryl bromides as the coupling partner in EtOH at 80–100 °C. The catalyst was recycled at least nine times.

Abstract
In a recent study, a new procedure for Z-selective olefin synthesis by reductive coupling of alkyl iodides with terminal alkynes in the presence of iron salts is described. This transformation is representative of many newly developed synthetic routes through the involvement of multiple species and phases, which makes mechanistic insight hard to obtain. Here, we report computational work aimed at exploring the possible reaction pathways. DFT calculations lead to two suggested routes, one involving C-I reduction by metallic zinc and radical addition to the alkyne and the other involving addition of two reduced iron species to the alkyne bond followed by reductive elimination. Comparison to experimental results as well as kinetic modeling is used to discuss the likelihood of these and related mechanisms.

Abstract
Herein the first visible-light-activated Sonogashira C-C coupling reaction at room temperature catalyzed by single-metal heterogeneous Cu2 O truncated nanocubes (Cu2 O TNCs) was developed. A wide variety of aryl halides and terminal alkynes worked well in this recyclable heterogeneous photochemical process to form the corresponding Sonogashira C-C coupling products in good yields. Mechanistic control studies indicated that CO2 enhances the formation of light-absorbing heterogeneous surface-bound CuI -phenylacetylide (λmax =472 nm), which further undergoes single-electron transfer with aryl iodides/bromides to enable Sonogashira C sp 2 -Csp bond formation. In contrast to literature-reported bimetallic TiO2 -containing nanoparticles as photocatalyst, this work avoided the need of cocatalysis by TiO2 . Single-metal CuI in Cu2 O TNCs was solely responsible for the observed C sp 2 -Csp coupling reactions under CO2 atmosphere.

Abstract
A novel and efficient visible-light photoredox method for the synthesis of internal alkynes containing quaternary carbons has been developed via coupling reactions of N-phthalimidoyl oxalates of tert-alcohols with 1-(2-(arylsulfonyl)ethynyl)benzenes. The reactions proceeded well at room temperature with good functional group tolerability.
