Abstract
Since the first vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) experiments conducted in the early 1970s, VCD spectroscopy has significantly advanced and firmly established itself in various fields of modern science and technology. For example, it became one of the preferred methods for absolute configuration determination in the pharmaceutical industry. Nevertheless, VCD development and applications have mostly focused on samples in solution, whereas applications to solid-state samples remain relatively rare. Although the first solid-state experiments were performed around the time of VCD discovery, they did not become the mainstream due to considerably more demanding methodological and theoretical challenges. In this review, we take the reader on a journey through some of the applications of VCD spectroscopy to solid-state samples. We look at the field of solid-state VCD from both a historical perspective and a methodological point of view, highlighting the diverse directions explored with this technique. We attempt to categorize all the variety of solid-state VCD experiments undertaken to date. Additionally, we briefly outline the main challenges faced by the field, and provide an overview of the theoretical methodology accompanying the experimental developments. Finally, we conclude our solid-state VCD journey with an outlook on the future prospects of the field.

Abstract
The infrared spectra of iodotrifluoroethylene (ITFE) recorded under matrix-isolation (MI) conditions in para-hydrogen, neon and argon were investigated. The experimental spectra were analyzed by comparison with computed anharmonic spectra obtained in the second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) framework at the MP2 and revDSD-PBEP86-D3BJ levels of theory. In para-hydrogen and neon matrices, the experimentally observable bands in the range of 1800-650 cm-1 could be assigned to vibrational transitions of monomeric ITFE. The spectral resolution even allowed assignments of transitions arising from 13C-isotopologues and the observation of various higher-order resonances in the range up to ∼3550 cm-1. A comprehensive series of MI experiments in argon obtained by varying several experimental parameters revealed a dependence of the spectra on the deposition temperature. The spectra generally showed strong site-splitting effects due to the existence of different local environments around the ITFE molecule. Detailed analysis of the experimental spectra resulted in the identification of bands which are differently affected by matrix annealing. This observation led to the conclusion that ITFE occupies two major matrix sites of different stability. Calculations on ITFE dimers confirmed that spectral changes during annealing are due to the formation of dimers, which are stabilized through π-π interactions.

Abstract
Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) enhancement by low-lying electronic states (LLESs) is a fascinating phenomenon, but accounting for it theoretically remains a challenge despite significant research efforts over the past 20 years. In this article, we synthesized two transition metal complexes using the tetradentate Schiff base ligands (R,R)- and (S,S)-N,N'-Bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediamine with Co(II) and Mn(III), referred to as Co(II)-salen-chxn and Mn(III)-Cl-salen-chxn, respectively. Their stereochemical properties were explored through a combined experimental chiroptical spectroscopic and theoretical approach, with a focus on Co(II)-salen-chxn. Extensive conformational searches in CDCl3 for both high- and low-spin states were carried out and the associated infrared (IR), VCD, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra were simulated. A good agreement between experimental and simulated data was achieved for IR, VCD, UV-Vis, and ECD, except in the case of VCD of Co(II)-salen-chxn which exhibits significant intensity enhancement and monosignate VCD bands, attributed to the LLESs. Interestingly, detailed comparisons with Mn(III)-Cl-salen-chxn and previously reported Ni(II)-salen-chxn and Cu(II)-salen-chxn complexes suggest that the enhancement factor is predicted by the current density functional theory simulations. However, the monosignate signatures observed in the experimental Co(II) VCD spectrum were not captured theoretically. Based on the experiment and theoretical VCD and ECD comparison, it is tentatively suggested that Co(II)-salen-chxn exists in both low- and high-spin states, with the former being dominant, while Mn(III)-Cl-salen-chxn in the high-spin state. The study indicates that VCD enhancement by LLESs is at least partially captured by the existing theoretical simulation, while the symmetry consideration in vibronic coupling provides further insight into the mechanisms behind the VCD sign-flip.

Abstract
VCD research continues to thrive, driven by ongoing experimental and theoretical advances. Modern studies deal with increasingly complex samples featuring weak intermolecular interactions and shallow potential energy surfaces. Likewise, the combination of VCD measurements with, for instance, cryo-spectroscopic techniques has significantly increased their sensitivity. The extent to which such modern measurements enhance the informative value of VCD depends significantly on the quality of the theoretical models, which must adequately account for anharmonicity, solvation and molecular dynamics. We herein discuss how experimental advancements engage in a stimulating interplay with recent theoretical developments, pursuing either the static or the dynamic computational route. Both paths have their own strengths and limitations, each addressing fundamentally different problems. We give an outlook on future challenges of VCD research, including the possibility to combine static and dynamic approaches to obtain a full picture of the sample.

Abstract
Combining vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy with the matrix isolation (MI) technique opens up interesting possibilities to study chiral molecules. MI involves the isolation of guest species in inert solid matrices at cryogenic temperatures. Hence, MI-VCD measures are solid-state VCD measurements, and as such, can suffer from mostly birefringance-related artefacts in the same way as common solid-state VCD measurements. In this contribution, we demonstrate that the sample preparation condition have tremendous impact on the quality and reliability of the recorded MI-VCD spectra. While MI-IR spectra are basically blind to these artefacts, the variation of deposition temperatures and host flow rates seem to control whether high quality MI-VCD spectra are obtained or if depolarization effects lead to completely obscured spectra. For two selected examples, styrene oxide (SO) and 1-phenyl propylene oxide (PPO), we discuss how the various experimental conditions may lead to the aforementioned effects and give a microscopic description of their origin.

Abstract
The infrared (IR) and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of methyl β-D-glucopyranose in water were measured. Both implicit and explicit solvation models were utilized to explain the observed spectra. The vast body of existing experimental and theoretical data suggested that about eight explicit water molecules are needed to account for the solvent effects, supported by the current Quantum Cluster Growth (QCG) analysis. Extensive manual and systematic conformational searches of the molecular target and its water clusters were carried out by using a recently developed conformational searching tool, conformer-rotamer ensemble sampling tool (CREST), and the microsolvation model in the associated QCG code. The Boltzmann averaged IR and VCD spectra of the methyl β-D-glucopyranose-(water)n (n = 8) conformers in the PCM of water provide better agreement with the experimental ones than those with n = 0, 1, and 2. The explicit solvation with eight water molecules was shown to greatly modify the conformational preference of methyl β-D-glucopyranose from its monomeric form. Further analyses show that the result is consistent with the existence of long-lived methyl β-D-glucopyranose monohydrates with the additional explicit water effects being accounted for with the quantum mechanical treatment of the other seven close-by water molecules in the PCM of water.

Abstract
Chirality transfer (also called induced chirality) is a phenomenon present in chiroptical spectra that manifests itself as a new band or bands of an achiral molecule interacting with a chiral one. In the Raman optical activity (ROA) spectroscopy, the bands of achiral solvents have been recently observed, but the latest papers have shown that they corresponded to the new ECD-Raman (eCP-Raman) effect. Here, we show an unambiguous example of chirality transfer observed in the ROA spectra. The spectra registered for the (1:1) mixtures of achiral benzonitrile with the enantiomers of 2,2,2-trifluoro-1-phenylethanol, 1-phenylethanol, and 1-phenylethylamine exhibited the v(CN) vibration band at about 2230 cm-1. The ROA measurements were repeated several times to ensure the reliability of the phenomenon. Calculations revealed the CN···HO or CN···HNH hydrogen bond formation accompanied by the π···π or CH···π interactions. The interaction strength was shown to be an important factor for the pronouncement of the ROA chirality transfer effect.

Abstract
The infrared (IR) absorption and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of an intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded chiral amino-alcohol, (1S,2R)-(-)-cis-1-amino-2-indanol, are studied in DMSO-d6 . The spectra are simulated at the density functional theory (DFT) level within the frame of the cluster-in-the-liquid model. Both IR and VCD spectra show a clear signature of the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds at the detriment of the intramolecular OH … N interaction present in the isolated molecule. Two solvent molecules are necessary to reproduce the experimental spectra. Whereas the first DMSO molecule captures the main spectral modifications due to hydrogen bond formation between the solute and the solvent, the second DMSO molecule is necessary for a good description of the Boltzmann contribution of the different complexes, based on their Gibbs free energy.

Abstract
The hydrogen bonded complexes of the chiral ammonium salt α-methylbenzyl ammonium chloride (MBA-H+Cl-) and the achiral crown ethers 18c6 and 15c5 serve as model systems to investigate the effect of host-guest complex formation on the conformational preferences of the macrocycles. We demonstrate that the intermolecular interactions result in new VCD signatures, that can be assigned to vibrational modes of the crown ethers. Based on a detailed conformational analysis, we investigate the origin of these signatures and discuss induced VCD (iVCD) and conformational chirality as possible sources of VCD intensity. The macrocycle in the MBA-H+/18c6 complex prefers either an achiral D3d-symmetric conformation, which gives rise to iVCD, or chiral conformations, that feature individual contributions to the VCD spectrum. For the MBA-H+/15c5 complex, the contributions of the macrocycle to the VCD signatures are less pronounced and found to arise solely from conformational chirality. Therefore, analysis of the VCD signatures confirms that the small chiral guest molecule is able to affect the conformational preferences of a macrocyclic host. The study thus demonstrates the suitability of VCD spectroscopy for the characterization of analogous supramolecular host-guest complexes.

Abstract
We present a computational study of vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) in solutions of (S)-lactic acid, relying on ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and full solvation with bulk water. We discuss the effect of the hydrogen bond network on the aggregation behaviour of the acid: while aggregates of the solute represent conditions encountered in a weakly interacting solvent, the presence of water drastically interferes with the clusters - more strongly than originally anticipated. For both scenarios we computed the VCD spectra by means of nuclear velocity perturbation theory (NVPT). The comparison with experimental data allows us to establish a VCD-structure relationship that includes the solvent network around the chiral solute. We suggest that fundamental modes with strong polarisation such as the carbonyl stretching vibration can borrow VCD from the chirally restructured solvent cage, which extends the common explanatory models of VCD generation in aqueous solution.

Abstract
We introduce a new theoretical formalism to compute solid-state vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra from molecular dynamics simulations. Having solved the origin-dependence problem of the periodic magnetic gauge, we present IR and VCD spectra of (1S,2S)-trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol obtained from first-principles molecular dynamics calculations and nuclear velocity perturbation theory, along with the experimental results. Because the structure model imposes periodic boundary conditions, the common origin of the rotational strength has hitherto been ill-defined and was approximated by means of averaging multiple origins. The new formalism reconnects the periodic model with the finite physical system and restores gauge freedom. It nevertheless fully accounts for nonlocal spatial couplings from the gauge transport term. We show that even for small simulation cells the rich nature of solid-state VCD spectra found in experiments can be reproduced to a very satisfactory level.

Abstract
The conformational landscape and aggregation behaviour of tetrahydro-2-furoic acid (THFA) were investigated by using matrix isolation-vibrational circular dichroism (MI-VCD). The well-resolved experimental MI-IR and MI-VCD features in an argon matrix at 10 K allow one to identify two dominant monomeric conformations as trans-THFA where the hydroxyl and carbonyl groups of COOH are at opposite sides, as well as one cis-conformer. At 24 K and 30 K deposition temperatures, the experimental IR and VCD spectral features reveal further growth of the binary THFA aggregates. Systematic conformational searches identified three vastly different binary binding topologies, resulting in a few hundred stable (THFA)2 conformers. Interestingly, the main binary structures observed correspond to an unusual type of structure which is made of two trans-THFA subunits, in contrast to the usual double H-bonded ring binary structures, identified in a previous solution study. The present work showcases the power of MI-VCD spectroscopy in revealing unusual structures formed in a cold rare gas matrix.

Abstract
Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) is a widely used standard method for determination of absolute stereochemistry, and somewhat less so for biomolecule characterization and following dynamic processes. Over the last few decades, different VCD instrument designs have developed for various purposes, and reliable commercial instrumentation is now available. This review will briefly survey historical and currently used instrument designs and describe some aspects of more recently reported developments. An important factor in applying VCD to conformational studies is theoretical modeling of spectra for various structures, techniques for which are briefly surveyed.

Abstract
Induced circular dichroism (ICD) is the CD observed in the absorption of an achiral molecule bound to a transparent chiral molecule through noncovalent interactions. ICD spectroscopy has been used to probe the binding between molecules, such as protein-ligand interactions. However, most ICD spectra have been measured in solution, which only exhibit the averaged CD values of all conformational isomers in solution. Here, we obtained the first isomer-selective ICD spectra by applying resonant two-photon ionization CD spectroscopy to jet-cooled phenol complexes with (-)-methyl l-lactate (PhOH-(-)ML). The well-resolved CD bands in the spectra were assigned to two conformers, which contained different types of hydrogen-bonding interactions between PhOH and (-)ML. The ICD values of the two conformers have different signs and magnitudes, which were explained by differences both in the geometrical asymmetries of PhOH bound to (-)ML and in the electronic coupling strengths between PhOH and (-)ML.

Abstract
The hexameric capsule of resorcin[4]arene 1 is capable of encapsulating tertiary amines, which has recently been used in the application of [(1)6 (H2 O)8 ] as (co-)catalyst in various asymmetric reactions. However, not much is known about the highly asymmetric but conformationally very dynamic structure of the capsule after uptake of chiral molecules. Therefore, in this contribution, we utilize electronic circular dichroism and vibrational circular dichroism spectroscopy to investigate how several chiral guest molecules affect the structural preferences of the capsule [(1)6 (H2 O)8 ]. In particular, we show that one small chiral amine encapsulated in [(1)6 (H2 O)8 ] is sufficient to control and dictate the stereochemical preferences of the entire capsule. Furthermore, neither strong π-π interactions nor a significant steric bulk are required for this induction. The observation of such a chiral imprint of the guest's stereochemistry onto its host molecule is expected to have implications also for other supramolecular capsules.

Abstract
The iconic helical structure of DNA is stabilized by the solvation environment, where a change in the hydration state can lead to dramatic changes to the DNA structure. X-ray diffraction experiments at cryogenic temperatures have shown crystallographic water molecules in the minor groove of DNA, which has led to the notion of a spine of hydration of DNA. Here, chiral nonlinear vibrational spectroscopy of two DNA sequences shows that not only do such structural water molecules exist in solution at ambient conditions but that they form a chiral superstructure: a chiral spine of hydration. This is the first observation of a chiral water superstructure templated by a biomolecule. While the biological relevance of a chiral spine of hydration is unknown, the method provides a direct way to interrogate the properties of the hydration environment of DNA and water in biological settings without the use of labels.

Abstract
Vibrational optical activity spectroscopies, namely vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and Raman optical activity (ROA), have been emerged in the past decade as powerful spectroscopic tools for stereochemical information of a wide range of chiral compounds in solution directly. More recently, their applications in unveiling solvent effects, especially those associated with water solvent, have been explored. In this review article, we first select a few examples to demonstrate the unique sensitivity of VCD spectral signatures to both bulk solvent effects and explicit hydrogen-bonding interactions in solution. Second, we discuss the induced solvent chirality, or chiral transfer, VCD spectral features observed in the water bending band region in detail. From these chirality transfer spectral data, the related conformer specific gas phase spectroscopic studies of small chiral hydration clusters, and the associated matrix isolation VCD experiments of hydrogen-bonded complexes in cold rare gas matrices, a general picture of solvation in aqueous solution emerges. In such an aqueous solution, some small chiral hydration clusters, rather than the chiral solutes themselves, are the dominant species and are the ones that contribute mainly to the experimentally observed VCD features. We then review a series of VCD studies of amino acids and their derivatives in aqueous solution under different pHs to emphasize the importance of the inclusion of the bulk solvent effects. These experimental data and the associated theoretical analyses are the foundation for the proposed "clusters-in-a-liquid" approach to account for solvent effects effectively. We present several approaches to identify and build such representative chiral hydration clusters. Recent studies which applied molecular dynamics simulations and the subsequent snapshot averaging approach to generate the ROA, VCD, electronic CD, and optical rotatory dispersion spectra are also reviewed. Challenges associated with the molecular dynamics snapshot approach are discussed and the successes of the seemingly random "ad hoc explicit solvation" reported before are also explained. To further test and improve the "clusters-in-a-liquid" model in practice, future work in terms of conformer specific gas phase spectroscopy of sequential solvation of a chiral solute, matrix isolation VCD measurements of small chiral hydration clusters, and more sophisticated models for the bulk solvent effects would be highly valuable.

Abstract
The transfer of chirality from one set of molecules to another is fundamental for applications in chiral technology and has likely played a crucial role for establishing homochirality on earth. Here we show that an intrinsically chiral gold cluster can transfer its handedness to an achiral molecule adsorbed on its surface. Solutions of chiral Au38(2-PET)24 (2-PET=2-phenylethylthiolate) cluster enantiomers show strong vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) signals in vibrations of the achiral adsorbate. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that 2-PET molecules adopt a chiral conformation. Chirality transfer from the cluster to the achiral adsorbate is responsible for the preference of one of the two mirror images. Intermolecular interactions between the adsorbed molecules on the crowded cluster surface seem to play a dominant role for the phenomena. Such chirality transfer from metals to adsorbates likely plays an important role in heterogeneous enantioselective catalysis.

Abstract
Two enantiomorphic 3D lanthanide coordination polymers of {[Dy5(L)4(H2O)10][Dy(H2O)7][Na(H2O)5]}·(ClO4)7·(H2O)15 (1a for R and 1b for S) with chiral helical chains were synthesized based on an achiral ligand N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine-N,N',N'-triacetic acid (H3L) and Dy(ClO4)3. Crystal analysis revealed that 1a and 1b were crystallized in chiral space groups P4132 and P4332, respectively. The absolute configurations of the two structures were evidenced by vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra with one single crystal sample.

Abstract
We establish helical gold nanorods as the first examples of chiral recognition nanostructures by examining the simple chiral molecule CClHDT adsorbed on the helical Au40 nanorod. We calculate the vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of the R and S enantiomers of CClHDT adsorbed on the R (or S) enantiomer of Au40 using relativistic density functional theory. The highest adsorption energy is found when the Cl atom of CClHDT binds to a low-coordinated Au atom at the edge of Au40. There are three adsorption modes (essentially identical in energy) corresponding to three orientations of the HDT moiety. We show that, for each adsorption mode, the VCD spectra are distinctly different for the Au40(R)-ClHDT(R) and Au40(R)-CClHDT(S) complexes, and we give a qualitative explanation for this based on the principle of chirality transfer. For comparison with the results for Au40, we calculate the VCD spectra of the R and S enantiomers of CClHDT adsorbed on the achiral Au20 tetrahedral cluster. Again, there are three adsorption modes (essentially identical in energy) corresponding to three orientations of the HDT moiety. However, we show that, for each adsorption mode, the VCD spectra are mirror symmetric but otherwise essentially identical for the Au20-CClHDT(R) and Au20-CClHDT(S) complexes. Thus, the inherent chirality of the helical Au40 nanorod is essential for its chiral recognition functionality.
