Reversible p Ka Modulation of Carboxylic Acids in Temperature-Responsive Nanoparticles through Imprinted Electrostatic Interactions

The acid dissociation constants (p K_a values) of Brønsted acids at the active sites of proteins are reversibly modulated by intramolecular electrostatic interactions with neighboring ions in a reaction cycle. The resulting p K_a shift is crucial for the proteins to capture, transfer, and release target ions. On the other hand, reversible p K_a modulation through electrostatic interactions in synthetic polymer materials has seldom been realized because the interactions are strongly shielded by solvation water molecules in aqueous media. Here, we prepared hydrogel nanoparticles (NPs) bearing carboxylic acid groups whose p K_a values can be reversibly modulated by electrostatic interactions with counterions in the particles. We found that the deprotonated states of the acids were stabilized by electrostatic interactions with countercations only when the acids and cations were both imprinted in hydrophobic microdomains in the NPs during polymerization. Cationic monomers, like primary amine- and guanidium group-containing monomers, which interacted strongly with growing NPs showed greater p K_a modulation than monomers that did not interact with the NPs, such as quaternary ammonium group-containing monomers. Modulation was enhanced when the guanidium moieties were protected with hydrophobic groups during polymerization, so that the guanidium ions were imprinted in the hydrophobic microdomains; the lowest p K_a of ∼4.0 was achieved as a result. The p K_a modulation of the acids could be reversibly removed by inducing a temperature-dependent volume phase transition of the gel NPs. These design principles are applicable to other stimuli-responsive materials and integral to the development of synthetic materials that can be used to capture, transport, and separate target ions.

Significance, evolution and recent advances in adsorption technology, materials and processes for desalination, water softening and salt removal

Desalination and softening of sea, brackish, and ground water are becoming increasingly important solutions to overcome water shortage challenges. Various technologies have been developed for salt removal from water resources including multi-stage flash, multi-effect distillation, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, electrodialysis, as well as adsorption. Recently, removal of solutes by adsorption onto selective adsorbents has shown promising perspectives. Different types of adsorbents such as zeolites, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), activated carbons, graphenes, magnetic adsorbents, and low-cost adsorbents (natural materials, industrial by-products and wastes, bio-sorbents, and biopolymer) have been synthesized and examined for salt removal from aqueous solutions. It is obvious from literature that the existing adsorbents have good potentials for desalination and water softening. Besides, nano-adsorbents have desirable surface area and adsorption capacity, though are not found at economically viable prices and still have challenges in recovery and reuse. On the other hand, natural and modified adsorbents seem to be efficient alternatives for this application compared to other types of adsorbents due to their availability and low cost. Some novel adsorbents are also emerging. Generally, there are a few issues such as low selectivity and adsorption capacity, process efficiency, complexity in preparation or synthesis, and problems associated to recovery and reuse that require considerable improvements in research and process development. Moreover, large-scale applications of sorbents and their practical utility need to be evaluated for possible commercialization and scale up.

Multiresponsive Behavior of Functional Poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s in Water

The multiresponsive behavior of functionalized water-soluble conjugated polymers (CPs) is presented with potential applications for sensors. In this study, we investigated the aqueous solubility behavior of water-soluble CPs with high photoluminescence and with a particular focus on their pH and temperature responsiveness. For this purpose, two poly(phenylene vinylene)s (PPVs)-namely 2,5-substituted PPVs bearing both carboxylic acid and methoxyoligoethylene glycol units-were investigated, with different amount of carboxylic acid units. Changes in the pH and temperature of polymer solutions led to a response in the fluorescence intensity in a pH range from 3 to 10 and for temperatures ranging from 10 to 85 °C. Additionally, it is demonstrated that the polymer with the largest number of carboxylic acid groups displays upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-like thermoresponsive behavior in the presence of a divalent ion like Ca2+. The sensing capability of these water-soluble PPVs could be utilized to design smart materials with multiresponsive behavior in biomedicine and soft materials.
