Surface Charge-Directed Efficient and Selective Catalytic Activities of Porous M@UiO-66 Composites (M = Pt or Ag) for Reduction of Organic Pollutants

Precisely constructed porous composites containing catalytically active nanoparticles can stabilize unstable nanoparticles, thus improving catalytic activity and longevity while preventing agglomeration of active nanoparticles. Herein, we report the confined incorporation of highly active metal nanoparticles within a metal-organic framework support and efficient catalytic performances in the reduction of organic pollutants, such as methylene blue (MB) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). UiO-66-based porous composites (M@UiO-66, M = Pt or Ag) containing well-dispersed metal nanoparticles are constructed via the one-step thermal treatment of UiO-66 implanted with metal ions (UiO-66/Mⁿ⁺, Mⁿ⁺ = Pt²⁺ or Ag⁺). The comprehensive features of M@UiO-66s, such as well-dispersed nanocatalysts, well-developed pores, and characteristic surface charges, expedite not only efficient but also selective catalytic activities in the reduction of MB or 4-NP, along with impressive recyclability.

Metal Ion-Directed Functional Metal-Phenolic Materials

Metal ions are ubiquitous in nature and play significant roles in assembling functional materials in fields spanning chemistry, biology, and materials science. Metal-phenolic materials are assembled from phenolic components in the presence of metal ions through the formation of metal-organic complexes. Alkali, alkali-earth, transition, and noble metal ions as well as metalloids interacting with phenolic building blocks have been widely exploited to generate diverse hybrid materials. Despite extensive studies on the synthesis of metal-phenolic materials, a comprehensive summary of how metal ions guide the assembly of phenolic compounds is lacking. A fundamental understanding of the roles of metal ions in metal-phenolic materials engineering will facilitate the assembly of materials with specific and functional properties. In this review, we focus on the diversity and function of metal ions in metal-phenolic material engineering and emerging applications. Specifically, we discuss the range of underlying interactions, including (i) cation-π, (ii) coordination, (iii) redox, and (iv) dynamic covalent interactions, and highlight the wide range of material properties resulting from these interactions. Applications (e.g., biological, catalytic, and environmental) and perspectives of metal-phenolic materials are also highlighted.

Understanding the temperature induced aggregation of silica nanoparticles decorated with temperature-responsive polymers: Can a small step in the chemical structure make a giant leap for a phase transition?

Temperature-responsive nanomaterials have gained increasing interest over the past decade due their ability to undergo conformational changes in situ, in response to a change in temperature. One class of temperature-responsive polymers are those with lower critical solution temperature, which phase separate in aqueous solution above a critical temperature. When these temperature-responsive polymers are grafted to a solid nanoparticle, a change in their surface properties occurs above this critical temperature, from hydrophilic to more hydrophobic, giving them a propensity to aggregate. This study explores the temperature induced aggregation of silica nanoparticles functionalised with two isomeric temperature-responsive polymers with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior, namely poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM), and poly(2-n-propyl-2-oxazoline) (PNPOZ) with similar molecular weights (5000 Da) and grafting density. These nanoparticles exhibited striking differences in the temperature of aggregation, which is consistent with LCST of each polymer. Using a combination of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS), we probed subtle differences in the aggregation mechanism for PNIPAM- and PNPOZ-decorated silica nanoparticles. The nanoparticles decorated with PNIPAM and PNPOZ show similar aggregation mechanism that was independent of polymer structure, whereby aggregation starts by the formation of small aggregates. A further increase in temperature leads to interaction between these aggregates and results in full-scale aggregation and subsequent phase separation.

Nanomechanics of π-cation-π interaction with implications for bio-inspired wet adhesion

Cation-π interactions play a vital role in modulating various biological processes, e.g., potassium-selective channel, protein folding and adhesion of marine organism. Previous studies mainly focus on binary cation-π interaction, whereas due to the complexity of biological systems and surrounding environments, a single cation is often in close proximity with more than one π-conjugated unit, which could exhibit essentially different binding behavior. Herein, the first experimental evidence of ternary π-cation-π interaction is reported through direct nanomechanical force measurement in a model π-conjugated poly(catechol) (PC) system coexisting with K⁺. Ternary π-cation-π interactions can bridge π-conjugated moieties, resulting in robust adhesion and promoting PC assembly and deposition. Particularly, these ternary complexes are discovered to transit to binary binding pairs by increasing K⁺ concentration, undermining adhesion and assembly due to lack of bridging. The π-cation-π binding strength follows the trend of NMe₄⁺ > K⁺ > Na⁺ > Li⁺. Employing the π-cation-π interaction, a deposition strategy to fabricate π-conjugated moiety based adhesive coatings on different substrates is realized. Our findings provide useful insights in engineering wet adhesives and coatings with reversible adhesion properties, and more broadly, with implications on rationalizing biological assembly.

Star-Shaped Poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) and Poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) with Central Thiacalix[4]Arene Fragments: Reduction and Stabilization of Silver Nanoparticles

The interaction of silver nitrate with star-shaped poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) and poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) containing central thiacalix[4]arene cores, which proceeds under visible light in aqueous solutions at ambient temperature, was studied. It was found that this process led to the formation of stable colloidal solutions of silver nanoparticles. The kinetics of the formation of the nanoparticles was investigated by the observation of a time-dependent increase in the intensity of the plasmon resonance peak that is related to the nanoparticles and appears in the range of 400 to 700 nm. According to the data of electron and X-ray spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and dynamic light scattering, the radius of the obtained silver nanoparticles is equal to 30 nm. In addition, the flow birefringence experiments showed that solutions of nanoparticles have high optical shear coefficients.

Preparation and recyclable catalysis performance of functional macroporous polyHIPE immobilized with gold nanoparticles on its surface

High internal phase emulsion polymerization was adopted for preparing macroporous polymeric monoliths, polyHIPE–Br (PHIPE–Br). Macroporous PHIPE–Br was used as the initiator to initiate the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), resulting in a dense coating of polymers on the PHIPE surface and PHIPE–PGMA was obtained. Through a ring-opening addition reaction with TETA, a surface amino-polymer modified functional macroporous PHIPE–PGMA–TETA, was prepared conveniently. Gold nanoparticles could be easily in situ prepared and immobilized on the surface of PHIPE–PGMA–TETA. Characterization by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), EDX-mapping and TGA showed that PHIPE–PGMA–TETA was immobilized by the gold nanoparticles, and presented good catalytic properties. Moreover, the macroporous catalytic material, PHIPE–PGMA–TETA/Au NPs, presented recyclable catalytic performance without any decrease in activity. The materials and methods to form the monoliths and immobilize metal nanoparticles were simple and efficient, thus, opening new possibilities for highly porous PHIPE in catalysis applications.

The macroporous material PHIPE–PGMA–TETA/Au NPs has an open-cell and porous structure, and can effectively catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol.

A Very Short Be-Be Distance but No Bond: Synthesis and Bonding Analysis of Ng-Be2 O2 -Ng' (Ng, Ng'=Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe)

Short interatomic distances below standard values for a single bond are usually identified with double or triple bonds. The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of a molecule is reported where the distance between two beryllium atoms is shorter than a standard double bond but there is no bond. The cyclic diberyllium dioxide Be₂ O₂ molecule, which is coordinated by two noble gas atoms in Ng-Be₂ O₂ -Ng' (Ng, Ng'=Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) was isolated and spectroscopically identified in low-temperature matrices. The complexes possess very short Be-Be distances, but the analysis of the electronic structure reveals that there is no chemical bond.

Formation of polyoxazoline-silica nanoparticles via the surface-initiated cationic polymerization of 2-methyl-2-oxazoline

The fabrication of silica hybrid nanoparticles by a surface-initiated cationic ring-opening polymerization of poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline)s has been described.
