Magnetic Cobalt Ferrite Nanocrystals For an Energy Storage Concentration Cell

Magnetic Study of CuFe2O4-SiO2 Aerogel and Xerogel Nanocomposites

CuFe₂O₄ is an example of ferrites whose physico-chemical properties can vary greatly at the nanoscale. Here, sol-gel techniques are used to produce CuFe₂O₄-SiO₂ nanocomposites where copper ferrite nanocrystals are grown within a porous dielectric silica matrix. Nanocomposites in the form of both xerogels and aerogels with variable loadings of copper ferrite (5 wt%, 10 wt% and 15 wt%) were synthesized. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction investigations showed the occurrence of CuFe₂O₄ nanoparticles with average crystal size ranging from a few nanometers up to around 9 nm, homogeneously distributed within the porous silica matrix, after thermal treatment of the samples at 900 °C. Evidence of some impurities of CuO and α-Fe₂O₃ was found in the aerogel samples with 10 wt% and 15 wt% loading. DC magnetometry was used to investigate the magnetic properties of these nanocomposites, as a function of the loading of copper ferrite and of the porosity characteristics. All the nanocomposites show a blocking temperature lower than RT and soft magnetic features at low temperature. The observed magnetic parameters are interpreted taking into account the occurrence of size and interaction effects in an ensemble of superparamagnetic nanoparticles distributed in a matrix. These results highlight how aerogel and xerogel matrices give rise to nanocomposites with different magnetic features and how the spatial distribution of the nanophase in the matrices modifies the final magnetic properties with respect to the case of conventional unsupported nanoparticles.

Novel franklinite-like synthetic zinc-ferrite redox nanomaterial: synthesis, and evaluation for degradation of diclofenac in water

The current study investigates a novel redox technology based on synthetic franklinite-like zinc-ferrite nanomaterial with magnetic properties and redox nature for potential use in water treatment. Physicochemical characterization revealed the nanoscale size and AB2O4 spinel configuration of the zinc-ferrite nanomaterial. The redox activity of nanoparticles was tested for degradation of diclofenac (DCF) pharmaceutical in water, without any added external oxidants and under dark experimental conditions. Results revealed ~90% degradation in DCF (10 μM) within 2 min of reaction using 0.17 g/L Zn1.0Fe2.0O4. Degradation of DCF was due to chemical reduction by surface electrons on zinc-ferrite and oxidation by oxygen-based radicals. Three byproducts from reduction route and eight from oxidation pathways were identified in the reaction system. Reaction pathways were suggested based on the identified byproducts. Results demonstrated the magnetic zinc-ferrite is a standalone technology that has a great promise for rapid degradation of organic contaminants, such as DCF in water.

Nanochannels regulating ionic transport for boosting electrochemical energy storage and conversion: a review

Electrochemical power sources, as one of the most promising energy storage and conversion technologies, provide great opportunities for developing high energy density electrochemical devices and portable electronics. However, uncontrolled ionic transport in electrochemical energy conversion, typically undesired anion transfer, usually causes some issues degrading the performance of energy storage devices. Nanochannels offer an effective strategy to solve the ionic transport problems for boosting electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this review, the advantages of nanochannels for electrochemical energy storage and conversion and the construction principle of nanochannels are introduced, including ion selectivity and ultrafast ion transmission of nanochannels, which are considered as two critical factors to achieve highly efficient energy conversion. Recent advances in applications of nanochannels in lithium secondary batteries (LSBs), electrokinetic energy conversion systems and concentration cells are summarized in detail. Nanochannels exist in the above systems in two typical forms: functional separator and electrode protective layer. Current research on nanochannel-based LSBs is still at the early stage, and deeper and broader applications are expected in the future. Finally, the remaining challenges of nanochannel fabrication, performance improvement, and intelligent construction are presented. It is envisioned that this paper will provide new insights for developing high-performance and versatile energy storage electronics based on nanochannels.
