A Gas‐Phase Ca n Mn 4− n O 4 + Cluster Model for the Oxygen‐Evolving Complex of Photosystem II

Inspired by the activities of P-450 enzyme and Rieske oxygenases in nature, in which the high-valent Fe-oxo complexes play a key role for oxidation of alkanes, the oxidation process of methane by the high-valent iron oxide cation [FeO₂]⁺ has been explored by using Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry complemented by high-level quantum chemical calculations. In contrast to the previously reported [FeO]⁺/CH₄ and [Fe(O)OH]⁺/CH₄ systems, which afford [FeOH]⁺ as the main product, the generation of Fe⁺ dominates the reaction of [FeO₂]⁺ with CH₄. Theoretical calculations suggest a novel "oxygen rebound" pathway for the liberation of methanediol. In particular, the inevitable valence increase of Fe prior to C-H activation is similar to the cytochrome P-450 mediated processes. To our best knowledge, this study provides the first example of methane activation by the high-valent Fe(V)-oxo species in the gas phase, which may thus bridge the gas-phase model and the condensed-phase biosystems.

Hemicubane topological analogs of the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II mediating water-assisted propylene carbonate oxidation

A series of Ca-Mn clusters with the ligand 2-pyridinemethoxide (Py-CH₂O) have been prepared with varying degrees of topological similarity to the biological oxygen-evolving complex. These clusters activate water as a substrate in the oxidative degradation of propylene carbonate, with activity correlated with topological similarity to the OEC, lowering the onset potential of the oxidation by as much as 700 mV.

Suppression of Charge Recombination by Auxiliary Atoms in Photoinduced Charge Separation Dynamics with Mn Oxides: A Theoretical Study

Charge separation is one of the most crucial processes in photochemical dynamics of energy conversion, widely observed ranging from water splitting in photosystem II (PSII) of plants to photoinduced oxidation reduction processes. Several basic principles, with respect to charge separation, are known, each of which suffers inherent charge recombination channels that suppress the separation efficiency. We found a charge separation mechanism in the photoinduced excited-state proton transfer dynamics from Mn oxides to organic acceptors. This mechanism is referred to as coupled proton and electron wave-packet transfer (CPEWT), which is essentially a synchronous transfer of electron wave-packets and protons through mutually different spatial channels to separated destinations passing through nonadiabatic regions, such as conical intersections, and avoided crossings. CPEWT also applies to collision-induced ground-state water splitting dynamics catalyzed by Mn₄CaO₅ cluster. For the present photoinduced charge separation dynamics by Mn oxides, we identified a dynamical mechanism of charge recombination. It takes place by passing across nonadiabatic regions, which are different from those for charge separations and lead to the excited states of the initial state before photoabsorption. This article is an overview of our work on photoinduced charge separation and associated charge recombination with an additional study. After reviewing the basic mechanisms of charge separation and recombination, we herein studied substituent effects on the suppression of such charge recombination by doping auxiliary atoms. Our illustrative systems are X–Mn(OH)₂ tied to N-methylformamidine, with X=OH, Be(OH)₃, Mg(OH)₃, Ca(OH)₃, Sr(OH)₃ along with Al(OH)₄ and Zn(OH)₃. We found that the competence of suppression of charge recombination depends significantly on the substituents. The present study should serve as a useful guiding principle in designing the relevant photocatalysts.

Reactivity of Coinage Metal Hydrides for the Production of H2 Molecules

The formation of molecular hydrogen as well as the possibility of using coinage metal hydrides as a prospective complex to produce hydrogen was presented in this work. Therefore, the reactions involving the interaction between two coinage metal hydrides, MH (M=Cu, Ag and Au, homo and heterodimers), were studied. The free energy profiles corresponding to aforementioned complexation were analysed by means of ab initio methods of quantum chemistry. The characteristics of these intermediates, final complexes and the electron density properties of the established interactions were discussed.

Doubly-Charged Negative Ions as Novel Tunable Catalysts: Graphene and Fullerene Molecules Versus Atomic Metals

The fundamental mechanism underlying negative-ion catalysis involves bond-strength breaking in the transition state (TS). Doubly-charged atomic/molecular anions are proposed as novel dynamic tunable catalysts, as demonstrated in water oxidation into peroxide. Density Functional Theory TS calculations have found a tunable energy activation barrier reduction ranging from 0.030 eV to 2.070 eV, with Si2-, Pu2-, Pa2- and Sn2- being the best catalysts; the radioactive elements usher in new application opportunities. C602- significantly reduces the standard C60- TS energy barrier, while graphene increases it, behaving like cationic systems. According to their reaction barrier reduction efficiency, variation across charge states and systems, rank-ordered catalysts reveal their tunable and wide applications, ranging from water purification to biocompatible antiviral and antibacterial sanitation systems.
