Stabilization of Pentaphospholes as η5 -Coordinating Ligands

Electrophilic Functionalization of a Hexaphosphabenzene Ligand in [(Cp*Mo)2(μ,η6 : 6-P6)]

The electrophilic functionalization of the triple-decker sandwich complex [{Cp*Mo}2(μ,η6:6-P6)] (A) and its mono-oxidized counterpart [{Cp*Mo}2(μ,η6:6-P6)][SbF6] (B) with reactive main-group electrophiles as well as radical scavengers is shown to be a reliable method for the selective functionalization of the hexaphosphabenzene ligand. Depending on the electrophile used, the regioselectivity of the functionalization can be adjusted. Using group 16 electrophiles, the trisubstituted compounds [{Cp*Mo}2{(μ,η3 : 3-P3)(μ,η1 : 1 : 1 : 1-1,3-(SePh)2-2-Br-P3)}][TEF] (1), [{Cp*Mo}2(μ,η3 : 3-P3)(μ,η1 : 1 : 1 : 1-1,2,3-(EPh)3-P3)][SbF6] (E=S (2), Se (3)) as well as the side product [{Cp*Mo}2(μ,η4:4-P4)(μ,η1 : 1-P(SPh)2)][SbF6] (4) are obtained. By switching to phosphenium ions as group 15 electrophiles, the ring-inserted products [{Cp*Mo}2(μ,η3 : 3 : 2 : 2-P7R2)][TEF] (R=Cy (5), iPr (6)) are isolated, showing an unprecedented P7R2 structural motif. Furthermore, the reaction with MeOTf yields the dimeric [{Cp*Mo}4(1,4-Me2-μ4,η1 : 1 : 1 : 1 : 1 : 1-P6)(μ,η3 : 3-P3)2][TEF]2 (7) as the first example of a complex featuring two interconnected cyclo-P6 middle deck ligands. Finally, by combination of the methylation step with Ph2Se2, the mixed group 14/16 complex [{Cp*Mo}2{(μ,η3 : 3-P3)(μ,η1 : 1 : 1 : 11,2-(SePh)2-3-Me-P3)}][OTf] (8) is obtained.

Controlled introduction of functional groups at one P atom in [Cp*Fe(η5-P5)] and release of functionalised phosphines

By salt metathesis reactions of the anionic complexes of the type [Cp*Fe(η⁴-P₅R)]^- (R = ^tBu (1a), Me (1b), -C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh (1c); Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) with organic electrophiles (XR^FG; X = halogen; R^FG = (CH₂)₃Br, (CH₂)₄Br, Me) a variety of organo-substituted polyphosphorus ligand complexes of the type [Cp*Fe(η⁴-P₅RR^FG)] (2) are obtained. Thereby, organic substituents with different functional groups (FG), such as halogens or nitriles, are introduced. In [Cp*Fe(η⁴-P₅RR')] (2a: R = ^tBu, R' = (CH₂)₃Br), the bromine substituent can be easily substituted, leading to functionalized complexes [{Cp*Fe(η⁴-P₅tBu)}(CH₂)₃{Cp*Fe(η⁴-P₅Me)}] (4) and [Cp*Fe(η⁴-P₅RR')] (5) (R = ^tBu, R' = (CH₂)₃PPh₂) or by abstraction of a phosphine to the asymmetric substituted phosphine tBu(Bn)P(CH₂)₃Bn (6). The reaction of the dianionic species [K(dme)₂]₂[Cp*Fe(η⁴-P₅)] (I') with bromo-nitriles leads to [Cp*Fe{η⁴-P₅((CH₂)₃CN)₂}] (7), allowing the introduction of two functional groups attached to one phosphorus atom. 7 reacts with ZnBr₂ in a self-assembly reaction to form the supramolecular compound [Cp*Fe{η⁴-P₅((CH₂)₃CN)₂}ZnBr₂]_n (8).

Snapshots of sequential polyphosphide rearrangement upon metallatetrylene addition

Insertion and functionalization of gallasilylenes [LPhSi-Ga(Cl)LBDI] (LPh = PhC(NtBu)2; LBDI = [{2,6-iPr2C6H3NCMe}2CH]) into the cyclo-E5 rings of [Cp*Fe(η5-E5)] (Cp* = η5-C5Me5; E = P, As) are reported. Reactions of [Cp*Fe(η5-E5)] with gallasilylene result in E-E/Si-Ga bond cleavage and the insertion of the silylene in the cyclo-E5 rings. [(LPhSi-Ga(Cl)LBDI){(η4-P5)FeCp*}], in which the Si atom binds to the bent cyclo-P5 ring, was identified as a reaction intermediate. The ring-expansion products are stable at room temperature, while isomerization occurred at higher temperature, and the silylene moiety further migrates to the Fe atom, forming the corresponding ring-construction isomers. Furthermore, reaction of [Cp*Fe(η5-As5)] with the heavier gallagermylene [LPhGe-Ga(Cl)LBDI] was also investigated. All the isolated complexes represent rare examples of mixed group 13/14 iron polypnictogenides, which could only be synthesized by taking advantage of the cooperativity of the gallatetrylenes featuring low-valent Si(ii) or Ge(ii) and Lewis acidic Ga(iii) units/entities.

Reactivity of Sodium Pentaphospholide Na[ cyclo ‐P 5 ] towards C≡E (E=C, N, P) Triple Bonds

A diglyme solution of Na[cyclo-P₅ ] (1) reacts with alkynes and isolobal nitriles and phosphaalkynes to afford the otherwise elusive (aza)phospholide anions 2 a-c, 4 a,b, and 6. The reaction of Na[cyclo-P₅ ] with alkynes and nitriles was studied by means of DFT methods, which suggested a concerted mechanism for the formation of 2 a and 4 b. The anions 2 a-c, 4 a,b, and 6 coordinate in an η⁵ -fashion towards Fe^II to give the sandwich (aza)phosphametallocenes 3 a-c, 5 a,b and 7 in moderate to good yields. The new compounds were characterized by means of multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry.

Substituted aromatic pentaphosphole ligands - a journey across the p-block

The functionalization of pentaphosphaferrocene [Cp*Fe(η5-P5)] (1) with cationic group 13-17 electrophiles is shown to be a general synthetic strategy towards P-E bond formation of unprecedented diversity. The products of these reactions are dinuclear [{Cp*Fe}2{μ,η5:5-(P5)2EX2}][TEF] (EX2 = BBr2 (2), GaI2 (3), [TEF]- = [Al{OC(CF3)3}4]-) or mononuclear [Cp*Fe(η5-P5E)][X] (E = CH2Ph (4), CHPh2 (5), SiHPh2 (6), AsCy2 (7), SePh (9), TeMes (10), Cl (11), Br (12), I (13)) complexes of hetero-bis-pentaphosphole ((cyclo-P5)2R) or hetero-pentaphosphole ligands (cyclo-P5R), the aromatic all-phosphorus analogs of prototypical cyclopentadienes. Further, modifying the steric and electronic properties of the electrophile has a drastic impact on its reactivity and leads to the formation of [Cp*Fe(μ,η5:2-P5)SbICp'''][TEF] (8) which possesses a triple-decker-like structure. X-ray crystallographic characterization reveals the slightly twisted conformation of the cyclo-P5R ligands in these compounds and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy confirms their integrity in solution. DFT calculations shed light on the bonding situation of these compounds and confirm the aromatic character of the pentaphosphole ligands on a journey across the p-block.

Insertion of Phosphenium Ions into a Bicyclo[1.1.0]Tetraphosphabutane Iron Complex

By reacting [{Cp‴Fe(CO)₂}₂(µ,η^1:1-P₄)] (1) with in situ generated phosphenium ions [Ph₂P][A] ([A]^- = [OTf]^- = [O₃SCF₃]^-, [PF₆]^-), a mixture of two main products of the composition [{Cp‴Fe(CO)₂}₂(µ,η^1:1-P₅(C₆H₅)₂)][PF₆] (2a and 3a) could be identified by extensive ³¹P NMR spectroscopic studies at 193 K. Compound 3a was also characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, showing the rarely observed bicyclo[2.1.0]pentaphosphapentane unit. At room temperature, the novel compound [{Cp‴Fe}(µ,η^4:1-P₅Ph₂){Cp‴(CO)₂Fe}][PF₆] (4) is formed by decarbonylation. Reacting 1 with in situ generated diphenyl arsenium ions gives short-lived intermediates at 193 K which disproportionate at room temperature into tetraphenyldiarsine and [{Cp‴Fe(CO)₂}₄(µ₄,η^1:1:1:1-P₈)][OTf]₂ (5) containing a tetracyclo[3.3.0.0^2,7.0^3,6]octaphosphaoctane ligand.

Stabilization of Pentaphospholes as η5 -Coordinating Ligands

Electrophilic functionalisation of [Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 )] (1) yields the first transition-metal complexes of pentaphospholes (cyclo-P5 R). Silylation of 1 with [(Et3 Si)2 (μ-H)][B(C6 F5 )4 ] leads to the ionic species [Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 SiEt3 )][B(C6 F5 )4 ] (2), whose subsequent reaction with H2 O yields the parent compound [Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 H)][B(C6 F5 )4 ] (3). The synthesis of a carbon-substituted derivative [Cp*Fe(η5 -P5 Me)][X] ([X]- =[FB(C6 F5 )3 ]- (4 a), [B(C6 F5 )4 ]- (4 b)) is achieved by methylation of 1 employing [Me3 O][BF4 ] and B(C6 F5 )3 or a combination of MeOTf and [Li(OEt2 )2 ][B(C6 F5 )4 ]. The structural characterisation of these compounds reveals a slight envelope structure for the cyclo-P5 R ligand. Detailed NMR-spectroscopic studies suggest a highly dynamic behaviour and thus a distinct lability for 2 and 3 in solution. DFT calculations shed light on the electronic structure and bonding situation of this unprecedented class of compounds.
