Highly Enantioselective Cobalt-Catalyzed (3+2) Cycloadditions of Alkynylidenecyclopropanes

Ligand-Controlled Cobalt-Catalyzed Regiodivergent and Stereoselective Ring-Opening Isomerization of Vinyl Cyclopropanes

A ligand-controlled regiodivergent and stereoselective ring-opening isomerization of vinylcyclopropane was developed with cobalt catalysis. Employing the commercially available Xantphos ligand, the reactions afforded exclusively linear-type 1,3-dienes as the products. Interestingly, when switching the ligand to an amido-diphosphine ligand (PNP), branched-type 1,3-dienes were obtained with high regioselectivity and stereoselectivity. Preliminary mechanistic investigations suggested that a π-allyl metal and a metal-hydride species are involved as key intermediates in the two transformations, respectively.

Palladium catalyzed stereoselective intramolecular [3 + 2] cycloaddition reactions of (E) & (Z)-ene-vinylidenecyclopropanes

A palladium-catalyzed ring-opening cyclization of (E) & (Z)-ene-vinylidenecyclopropanes has been developed via an intramolecular [3 + 2] cycloaddition process in the presence of a sterically bulky biaryl phosphine ligand, stereoselectively affording fused cis- & trans-bicyclo[4.3.0] skeletal products in good yields with a broad substrate scope and good functional tolerance. A plausible reaction mechanism was proposed on the basis of previous work and the DFT calculations.

Cobalt(I)-Catalyzed (3 + 2 + 2) Cycloaddition between Alkylidenecyclopropanes, Alkynes, and Alkenes

Cobalt(I) catalysts equipped with bisphosphine ligands can be used to promote formal (3 + 2 + 2) intramolecular cycloadditions of enynylidenecyclopropanes of type 1. The method provides synthetically appealing 5,7,5-fused tricyclic systems in good yields and with complete diastereo- and chemoselectivity. Interestingly, its scope differs from that of previously reported annulations based on precious metal catalysts, specifically rhodium and palladium. Noticeably, density functional theory calculations confirm that the mechanism of the reaction is also different from those proposed for these other catalysts.

Experimental and Computational Studies on Cobalt(I)-Catalyzed Regioselective Allylic Alkylation Reactions

Here, we report the development of cobalt(I)-catalyzed regioselective allylic alkylation reactions of tertiary allyl carbonates with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds. A family of well-defined tetrahedral cobalt(I) complexes bearing commercially available bidentate bis(phosphine) ligands [(P,P)Co(PPh3 )Cl] are synthesized and explored as catalysts in allylic alkylation reactions. The catalyst [(dppp)Co(PPh3 )Cl] (dppp=1,3-Bis(diphenylphosphino)propane) enables the alkylation of a large variety of tertiary allyl carbonates with high yields and excellent regioselectivity for the branched product. Remarkably, this methodology is selective for the activation of tertiary allyl carbonates even in the presence of secondary allyl carbonates. This contrasts with the selectivity observed in cobalt-catalyzed allylic alkylations enabled by visible light photocatalysis. Mechanistic insights by means of experimental and computational investigations support a Co(I)/Co(III) catalytic cycle.

Cobalt-catalyzed enantioselective intramolecular reductive cyclization via electrochemistry

Transition-metal catalyzed asymmetric cyclization of 1,6-enynes has emerged as a powerful method for the construction of carbocycles and heterocycles. However, very rare examples worked under electrochemical conditions. We report herein a Co-catalyzed enantioselective intramolecular reductive coupling of enynes via electrochemistry using H₂O as hydride source. The products were obtained in good yields with high regio- and enantioselectivities. It represents the rare progress on the cobalt-catalyzed enantioselective transformation via electrochemistry with a general substrate scope. DFT studies explored the possible reaction pathways and revealed that the oxidative cyclization of enynes by LCo(I) is more favorable than oxidative addition of H₂O or other pathways.

Chemodivergent, Regio- and Enantioselective Cycloaddition Reactions between 1,3-Dienes and Alkynes

Alkynes and 1,3-dienes are among the most readily available precursors for organic synthesis. We report two distinctly different, catalyst-dependent, modes of regio- and enantioselective cycloaddition reactions between these classes of compounds providing rapid access to highly functionalized 1,4-cyclohexadienes or cyclobutenes from the same precursors. Complexes of an earth abundant metal, cobalt, with several commercially available chiral bisphosphine ligands with narrow bite angles catalyze [4+2]-cycloadditions between a 1,3-diene and an alkyne giving a cyclohexa-1,4-diene in excellent chemo-, regio- and enantioselectivities. In sharp contrast, complex of a finely tuned phosphino-oxazoline ligand promotes unique [2+2]-cycloaddition between the alkyne and the terminal double bond of the diene giving a highly functionalized cyclobutene in excellent regio- and enantioselectivities.

Rh(i)-catalyzed dimerization of ene-vinylidenecyclopropanes for the construction of spiro[4,5]decanes and mechanistic studies

Rh(i) complex catalyzed dimerization of ene-vinylidenecyclopropanes took place smoothly to construct a series of products containing spiro[4,5]decane skeletons featuring a simple operation procedure, mild reaction conditions, and good functional group tolerance. In this paper, the combination of experimental and computational studies reveals a counterion-assisted Rh(i)-Rh(iii)-Rh(v)-Rh(iii)-Rh(i) catalytic cycle involving tandem oxidative cyclometallation/reductive elimination/selective oxidative addition/selective reductive elimination/reductive elimination steps; in addition, a pentavalent spiro-rhodium intermediate is identified as the key intermediate in this dimerization reaction upon DFT calculation.

Palladium‐Catalyzed Tandem Cycloisomerization/Cross‐Coupling of Carbonyl‐ and Imine‐Tethered Alkylidenecyclopropanes

Pd⁰ catalysts featuring phosphorus‐based monodentate ligands can detour the reactivity of carbonyl‐tethered alkylidenecyclopropanes (ACPs) from standard (3+2) cycloadditions towards tandem cycloisomerization/cross‐coupling processes. This new reactivity lies on the formation of key π‐allyl oxapalladacyclic intermediates, which are subsequently trapped with external nucleophilic partners, instead of undergoing canonical C−O reductive eliminations. Importantly, the use of imine‐tethered ACP's is also feasible. Therefore, the method provides a straightforward and stereoselective entry to a wide variety of highly functionalized cyclic alcohols and amines.

DFT studies on Ni-catalyzed intermolecular cycloaddition of diynes with methyleneaziridines

The mechanisms of nickel-catalyzed intermolecular cycloaddition of diynes with methyleneaziridines to form substituted pyrroles have been investigated with DFT calculations. The DFT results don't support the originally proposed mechanisms, which involve β-C elimination or α-C elimination. Detailed calculations revealed that the preferred catalytic cycle is a combination of the cod dissociative mechanism and the cod associative mechanism, which is comprised of four stages: oxidative addition, ligand substitution of the diyne by cod, alkyne insertion and reductive elimination. Each of the alkyne moieties of the diyne substrate has an important role: one alkyne moiety acts as the reactant and inserts into the Ni-C bond to form the cycle expansion complex; the other free alkyne moiety has an effect as a ligand coordinated to the Ni center to promote the oxidative addition step (rate-determining step). Since there is no free alkyne in the monoalkyne substrate to coordinate to the Ni center, the monoalkyne catalytic cycle is unfavorable because of the high energy barrier for the oxidative addition step.

On the application of 3d metals for C-H activation toward bioactive compounds: The key step for the synthesis of silver bullets

Several valuable biologically active molecules can be obtained through C-H activation processes. However, the use of expensive and not readily accessible catalysts complicates the process of pharmacological application of these compounds. A plausible way to overcome this issue is developing and using cheaper, more accessible, and equally effective catalysts. First-row transition (3d) metals have shown to be important catalysts in this matter. This review summarizes the use of 3d metal catalysts in C-H activation processes to obtain potentially (or proved) biologically active compounds.
