Chirped pulse Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy of alcohol and water tetramers

In an effort to build towards quantitative models of alcohol:water microaggregation in liquid mixtures, the present works characterizes the energy landscape and structures of pure ethanol and mixed ethanol:water tetramers using Chirped Pulse Fourier-transform Microwave spectroscopy. Many conformers of each type of tetramer are available, and those with sufficiently strong dipole moments are experimentally examined. This analysis considers, but does not explicitly fit, the splitting of rotational states due to internal rotation of the methyl groups present, as well as utilizes isotopic substitution experiments to verify the conformer variations observed. Implications of the listed results include a suggestion of the stability of micro-aggregated structures as opposed to homogeneously mixed clusters, informing future work on characterization of larger clusters and any potential modeling of the hydrogen bond network at play.

High throughput chirped pulse Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy of ethanol and water clusters

Here we discuss the design and performance of a novel high-throughput instrument for Chirped Pulse Fourier-transform Microwave (CP-FTMW) spectroscopy, and demonstrate its efficacy through the identification of the lowest energy conformers of the ethanol trimer and mixed water : ethanol trimers. Rotational constants for these trimers were calculated from observed lines in the spectra from 10 to 14 GHz, and compared to the results of anharmonic ab initio computations. As predicted, all trimers share a cyclic donor-acceptor hydrogen bonding structure, with the ethanol monomer favoring the gauche conformation in the lowest energy structures. The increased speed of data collection and resulting sensitivity opens a new avenue into rotational studies of higher order clusters.

The First Stages of Nanomicelle Formation Captured in the Sevoflurane Trimer

Self-aggregation of sevoflurane, an inhalable, fluorinated anesthetic, provides a challenge for current state-of-the-art high-resolution techniques due to its large mass and the variety of possible hydrogen bonds between monomers. Here we present the observation of sevoflurane trimer by chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy, identified through the interplay of experimental and computational methods. The trimer (>600 Da), one of the largest molecular aggregates observed through rotational spectroscopy, does not resemble the binding (C-H···O) motif of the already characterized sevoflurane dimer, instead adapting a new binding configuration created predominantly from 17 CH···F hydrogen bonds that resembles a nanomicellar arrangement. The observation of such a heavy aggregate highlights the potential of rotational spectroscopy to study larger biochemical systems in the limit of spectroscopic congestion but also showcases the challenges ahead as the mass of the system increases.

Rotational Spectra of 2-Ethynylpyridine and Its Monohydrate: Influence of the Ortho-Substitution on Ring Geometry and Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonds

Rotational spectra of the 2-ethynylpyridine monomer and its monohydrate have been characterized by pulsed jet Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy complemented with quantum chemical calculations. The measurements of rotational transitions of the 2-ethynylpyridine monomer and its eight monosubstituted isotopologues (¹⁵N and ¹³C) in natural abundances allow an accurate structural description of the skeleton of 2-ethynylpyridine. For the monohydrate, only the most stable isomer, stabilized by an O-H···N and a secondary C-H···O hydrogen bonds, has been observed in the supersonic jet. Johnson's noncovalent interaction and quantum theory of atoms in molecules analyses have been performed and compared with results for several ortho-substituted pyridine derivatives to elucidate the general trend in their binding energies.

Interaction Types in C6H5(CH2)nOH-CO2 (n = 0-4) Determined by the Length of the Side Alkyl Chain

C₆H₅(CH₂)_nOH-CO₂ complexes have been investigated using rotational spectroscopy (n = 0-2) complemented by quantum chemical calculations (n = 0-4), which implies that the side alkyl chain length can determine the types of intermolecular interactions. Unlike the in-plane C···O tetrel bond in phenol-CO₂, the π*_CO2···π_aromatic interaction has been shown to link CO₂ to phenylmethanol and 2-phenylethanol, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the first time it has been demonstrated by rotational spectroscopy. Further elongations of the side alkyl chain gradually increase the energies of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in 3-phenylpropanol and 4-phenylbutanol so that CO₂ cannot break it. CO₂ will be pushed farther from the monomers and link with the -OH group through a dominating C···O tetrel bond. Our observations would allow, with the choice of the proper length of the side alkyl chain, new strategies for engineering C···π_aromatic-centered noncovalent bonding schemes for the capture, utilization, and storage of CO₂.

Competitive tetrel bond and hydrogen bond in benzaldehyde-CO2: characterization via rotational spectroscopy

The rotational spectrum of the 1 : 1 benzaldehyde-CO₂ complex has been investigated using pulsed-jet Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy complemented with quantum chemical calculations. Two isomers, both characterized by one C⋯O tetrel bond (n → π* interaction) and one C-H⋯O hydrogen bond (n → σ* interaction), have been observed in the pulsed jet. Competition between the tetrel bond and the hydrogen bond has been disclosed by natural bond orbital analysis: isomer I is characterized by one dominating OC_CO2⋯O tetrel bond (12.6 kJ mol^-1) and a secondary (C-H)_formyl⋯O hydrogen bond (2.2 kJ mol^-1); by contrast, in isomer II the (C-H)_phenyl⋯O hydrogen bond (7.6 kJ mol^-1) becomes the dominant bond, while the OC_CO2⋯O tetrel bond (5.8 kJ mol^-1) becomes much weaker with respect to that of isomer I. Using intensity measurements the relative population ratio of the two isomers was estimated to be N_I/N_II ≈ 2/1.

Microwave Spectrum of Two-Top Molecule: 2-Acetyl-3-Methylthiophene

The microwave spectrum of 2-acetyl-3-methylthiophene (2A3MT) was recorded in the frequency range from 2 to 26.5 GHz using a molecular jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometer and could be fully assigned to the anti-conformer of the molecule, while the syn-conformer was not observable. Torsional splittings of all rotational transitions in quintets due to internal rotations of the acetyl methyl and the ring methyl groups were resolved and analyzed, yielding barriers to internal rotation of 306.184(46) cm^-1 and 321.813(64) cm^-1 , respectively. The rotational and centrifugal distortion constants were determined with high accuracy, and the experimental values are compared to those derived from quantum chemical calculations. The experimentally determined inertial defect supports the conclusion that anti-2A3MT is planar, even though a number of MP2 calculations predicted the contrary.

Testing the Scalability of the HS-AUTOFIT Tool in a High-Performance Computing Environment

In the last years, the development of broadband chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectrometers has revolutionized the field of rotational spectroscopy. Currently, it is possible to experimentally obtain a large quantity of spectra that would be difficult to analyze manually due to two main reasons. First, recent instruments allow obtaining a considerable amount of data in very short times, and second, it is possible to analyze complex mixtures of molecules that all contribute to the density of the spectra. AUTOFIT is a spectral assignment software application that was developed in 2013 to support and facilitate the analysis. Notwithstanding the benefits AUTOFIT brings in terms of automation of the analysis of the accumulated data, it still does not guarantee a good performance in terms of execution time because it leverages the computing power of a single computing machine. To cater to this requirement, we developed a parallel version of AUTOFIT, called HS-AUTOFIT, capable of running on high-performance computing (HPC) clusters to shorten the time to explore and analyze spectral big data. In this paper, we report some tests conducted on a real HPC cluster aimed at providing a quantitative assessment of HS-AUTOFIT’s scaling capabilities in a multi-node computing context. The collected results demonstrate the benefits of the proposed approach in terms of a significant reduction in computing time.

The Role of Non-Covalent Interactions on Cluster Formation: Pentamer, Hexamers and Heptamer of Difluoromethane

The role of non-covalent interactions (NCIs) has broadened with the inclusion of new types of interactions and a plethora of weak donor/acceptor partners. This work illustrates the potential of chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave technique, which has revolutionized the field of rotational spectroscopy. In particular, it has been exploited to reveal the role of NCIs' in the molecular self-aggregation of difluoromethane where a pentamer, two hexamers and a heptamer were detected. The development of a new automated assignment program and a sophisticated computational screening protocol was essential for identifying the homoclusters in conditions of spectral congestion. The major role of dispersion forces leads to less directional interactions and more distorted structures than those found in polar clusters, although a detailed analysis demonstrates that the dominant interaction energy is the pairwise interaction. The tetramer cluster is identified as a structural unit in larger clusters, representing the maximum expression of bond between dimers.
