H2-Promoted Benign Coke Strategy for Dimethyl Ether Carbonylation with Long-Term Stability and High Activity

Zeolite-catalyzed dimethyl ether (DME) carbonylation provides a novel route to producing methyl acetate (MeOAc). Mordenite (MOR) has drawn significant interest because of its remarkable MeOAc selectivity in DME carbonylation, albeit with limited catalytic stability. Herein, novel MOR-based DME carbonylation catalysts, distinguished by long-term stability and high activity were successfully developed, based on an H2-promoted benign coke strategy. Both the H2 cofeeds and the presence of metal species with hydrogenation capability are demonstrated to be crucial for the regulation of coke depositions. The coke deposits can potentially cover the acid sites in the 12-MR main channels, thereby mitigating the occurrence of undesirable methanol-to-hydrocarbon side reactions. Meanwhile, the elimination of ultralarge coke species under the assistance of H2 and Cu species could ensure smooth mass transfer within the catalyst, contributing to its remarkable catalytic performance. The most highlighted DME carbonylation performance was achieved on coke-mediated CuZn-HMOR with a high MeOAc yield of 0.4-0.5 g·gcat-1·h-1 for over 520 h (over 50× enhancement versus HMOR), exhibiting promising industrial application potential. The current strategy is expected to inspire further research into zeolite-catalyzed reactions, which could be potentially improved by the presence of benign coke.

Competition between Mononuclear and Binuclear Copper Sites across Different Zeolite Topologies

A key challenge for metal-exchanged zeolites is the determination of metal cation speciation and nuclearity under synthesis and reaction conditions. Copper-exchanged zeolites, which are widely used in automotive emissions control and potential catalysts for partial methane oxidation, have in particular evidenced a wide variety of Cu structures that are observed to change with exposure conditions, zeolite composition, and topology. Here, we develop predictive models for Cu cation speciation and nuclearity in CHA, MOR, BEA, AFX, and FER zeolite topologies using interatomic potentials, quantum chemical calculations, and Monte Carlo simulations to interrogate this vast configurational and compositional space. Model predictions are used to rationalize experimentally observed differences between Cu-zeolites in a wide-body of literature, including nuclearity populations, structural variations, and methanol per Cu yields. Our results show that both topological features and commonly observed Al-siting biases in MOR zeolites increase the population of binuclear Cu sites, explaining the small population of mononuclear Cu sites observed in these materials relative to other zeolites such as CHA and BEA. Finally, we used a machine learning classification model to determine the preference to form mononuclear or binuclear Cu sites at different Al configurations in 200 zeolites in the international zeolite database. Model results reveal several zeolite topologies at extreme ends of the mononuclear vs binuclear spectrum, highlighting synthetic options for realization of zeolites with strong Cu nuclearity preferences.

Molecular Views on Mechanisms of Brønsted Acid-Catalyzed Reactions in Zeolites

The Brønsted acidity of proton-exchanged zeolites has historically led to the most impactful applications of these materials in heterogeneous catalysis, mainly in the fields of transformations of hydrocarbons and oxygenates. Unravelling the mechanisms at the atomic scale of these transformations has been the object of tremendous efforts in the last decades. Such investigations have extended our fundamental knowledge about the respective roles of acidity and confinement in the catalytic properties of proton exchanged zeolites. The emerging concepts are of general relevance at the crossroad of heterogeneous catalysis and molecular chemistry. In the present review, emphasis is given to molecular views on the mechanism of generic transformations catalyzed by Brønsted acid sites of zeolites, combining the information gained from advanced kinetic analysis, in situ, and operando spectroscopies, and quantum chemistry calculations. After reviewing the current knowledge on the nature of the Brønsted acid sites themselves, and the key parameters in catalysis by zeolites, a focus is made on reactions undergone by alkenes, alkanes, aromatic molecules, alcohols, and polyhydroxy molecules. Elementary events of C-C, C-H, and C-O bond breaking and formation are at the core of these reactions. Outlooks are given to take up the future challenges in the field, aiming at getting ever more accurate views on these mechanisms, and as the ultimate goal, to provide rational tools for the design of improved zeolite-based Brønsted acid catalysts.

Tuning the Micro-coordination Environment of Al in Dealumination Y Zeolite to Enhance Electron Transfer at the Cu-Mn Oxides Interface for Highly Efficient Catalytic Ozonation of Toluene at Low Temperatures

The development of stable, highly active, and inexpensive catalysts for the ozone catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is challenging but of great significance. Herein, the micro-coordination environment of Al in commercial Y zeolite was regulated by a specific dealumination method and then the dealuminated Y zeolite was used as the support of Cu-Mn oxides. The optimized catalyst Cu-Mn/DY exhibited excellent performance with around 95% of toluene removal at 30 °C. Besides, the catalyst delivered satisfactory stability in both high-humidity conditions and long-term reactions, which is attributed to more active oxygen vacancies and acidic sites, especially the strong Lewis acid sites newly formed in the catalyst. The decrease in the electron cloud density around aluminum species enhanced electron transfer at the interface between Cu-Mn oxides. Moreover, extra-framework octahedrally coordinated Al in the support promoted the electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI). Compared with single Mn catalysts, the incorporation of the Cu component changed the degradation pathway of toluene. Benzoic acid, as the intermediate of toluene oxidation, can directly ring-open on Cu-doped catalysts rather than being further oxidized to other byproducts, which increased the rate of the catalytic reaction. This work provides a new insight and theoretical guidance into the rational design of efficient catalysts for the catalytic ozonation of VOCs.
