Ionic nickel embedded in ceria with high specific CO2 methanation activity

Mechanisms underlying the nucleation processes of mesoporous ceria nanoparticles

Mesoporous ceria nanoparticles featuring ordered pores (O-MCNs) have much greater potential than their counterparts featuring interparticle pores (I-MCNs) due to their uniform pore size and interconnected framework structures. However, current methods can only synthesize I-MCNs and fail to achieve O-MCNs. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the formation of pores in I-MCNs can spark ideas for designing new methods to realize the synthesis of O-MCNs. In this study, the details of an established I-MCN synthetic method using 1-octadecene (ODE) and ethanol as a mixed solvent, Ce(NO3)3·6H2O as a precursor and trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) as a ligand were explored. The results revealed that six groups of molecules were generated ahead of ceria crystal nucleation, and these molecules played different roles in the formation of I-MCNs. Four steps, namely, ceria crystal nucleation, small ceria nanoparticle formation, small ceria nanoparticle assembly, and I-MCN growth, were involved in the formation of the I-MCNs. The assembly of small ceria nanoparticles driven by the fusion of the (200) plane leaving behind unoccupied spaces was the major reason for the formation of pores in the I-MCNs. These findings provided very useful information for the future design of new methods to achieve O-MCNs.

Intersystem Crossing Control of the Nb+ + CO2 → NbO+ + CO Reaction

The transfer of an oxygen atom from carbon dioxide (CO2) to a transition metal cation in the gas phase offers atomic level insights into single-atom catalysis for CO2 activation. Given that these reactions often involve open-shell transition metals, they may proceed through intersystem crossing between different spin manifolds. However, a definitive understanding of such spin-forbidden reaction requires dynamical calculations on multiple global potential energy surfaces (PESs) coupled by spin-orbit couplings. In this work, we report global PESs and spin-orbit couplings for three low-lying spin (quintet, triplet, and singlet) states for the reaction between the niobium cation (Nb+) and CO2, which are used to investigate the nonadiabatic reaction dynamics and kinetics. Comparison with experimental data of kinetics and collision dynamics shows satisfactory agreement. This reaction is found to be very similar to that between Ta+ + CO2. Specifically, our theoretical findings suggest that the rate-limiting step in this reaction is intersystem crossing, rather than potential barriers.

CeO2-Based Frustrated Lewis Pairs via Defective Engineering: Formation Theory, Site Characterization, and Small Molecule Activation

Activation of small molecules is considered to be a central concern in the theoretical investigation of environment- and energy-related catalytic conversions. Sub-nanostructured frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) have been an emerging research hotspot in recent years due to their advantages in small molecule activation. Although the progress of catalytic applications of FLPs is increasingly reported, the fundamental theories related to the structural formation, site regulation, and catalytic mechanism of FLPs have not yet been fully developed. Given this, it is attempted to demonstrate the underlying theory of FLPs formation, corresponding regulation methods, and its activation mechanism on small molecules using CeO2 as the representative metal oxide. Specifically, this paper presents three fundamental principles for constructing FLPs on CeO2 surfaces, and feasible engineering methods for the regulation of FLPs sites are presented. Furthermore, cases where typical small molecules (e.g., hydrogen, carbon dioxide, methane oxygen, etc.) are activated over FLPs are analyzed. Meanwhile, corresponding future challenges for the development of FLPs-centered theory are presented. The insights presented in this paper may contribute to the theories of FLPs, which can potentially provide inspiration for the development of broader environment- and energy-related catalysis involving small molecule activation.

Photocatalytic toluene oxidation with nickel-mediated cascaded active units over Ni/Bi2WO6 monolayers

Adsorption and activation of C-H bonds by photocatalysts are crucial for the efficient conversion of C-H bonds to produce high-value chemicals. Nevertheless, the delivery of surface-active oxygen species for C-H bond oxygenation inevitably needs to overcome obstacles due to the separated active centers, which suppresses the catalytic efficiency. Herein, Ni dopants are introduced into a monolayer Bi2WO6 to create cascaded active units consisting of unsaturated W atoms and Bi/O frustrated Lewis pairs. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal that these special sites can establish an efficient and controllable C-H bond oxidation process. The activated oxygen species on unsaturated W are readily transferred to the Bi/O sites for C-H bond oxygenation. The catalyst with a Ni mass fraction of 1.8% exhibits excellent toluene conversion rates and high selectivity towards benzaldehyde. This study presents a fascinating strategy for toluene oxidation through the design of efficient cascaded active units.

Theoretical Perspective on the Design of Surface Frustrated Lewis Pairs for Small-Molecule Activation

The excellent reactivity of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLP) to activate small molecules has gained increasing attention in recent decades. Though the development of surface FLP (SFLP) is prompting the application of FLP in the chemical industry, the design of SFLP with superior activity, high density, and excellent stability for small-molecule activation is still challenging. Herein, we review the progress of designing SFLP by surface engineering, screening natural SFLP, and the dynamic formation of SFLP from theoretical perspectives. We highlight the breakthrough in fine-tuning the activity, density, and stability of the designed SFLP studied by using computational methods. We also discuss future challenges and directions in designing SFLP with outstanding capabilities for small-molecule activation.

Deciphering Local Structural Complexity in Zn/Ga-ZrO2 CO2 Hydrogenation Catalysts

In the last few decades, massive effort has been expended in heterogeneous catalysis to develop new materials presenting high conversion, selectivity, and stability even under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. In this context, CO2 hydrogenation is an interesting reaction where the catalyst local structure is strongly related to the development of an active and stable material under hydrothermal conditions at T/P > 300 °C/30 bar. In order to clarify the relationship between catalyst local ordering and its activity/stability, we herein report a combined laboratory and synchrotron investigation of aliovalent element (Ce/Zn/Ga)-containing ZrO2 matrixes. The results reveal the influence of similar average structures with different short-range orderings on the catalyst properties. Moreover, a further step toward the comprehension of the oxygen vacancy formation mechanism in Ce- and Ga-ZrO2 catalysts is reported. Finally, the reported results illustrate a robust method to guide local structure determination and ultimately help to avoid overuse of the "solid solution" definition.

Comprehensive Density Functional and Kinetic Monte Carlo Study of CO2 Hydrogenation on a Well-Defined Ni/CeO2 Model Catalyst: Role of Eley-Rideal Reactions

A detailed multiscale study of the mechanism of CO2 hydrogenation on a well-defined Ni/CeO2 model catalyst is reported that couples periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations with kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations. The study includes an analysis of the role of Eley-Rideal elementary steps for the water formation step, which are usually neglected on the overall picture of the mechanism, catalytic activity, and selectivity. The DFT calculations for the chosen model consisting of a Ni4 cluster supported on CeO2 (111) show large enough adsorption energies along with low energy barriers that suggest this catalyst to be a good option for high selective CO2 methanation. The kMC simulations results show a synergic effect between the two 3-fold hollow sites of the supported Ni4 cluster with some elementary reactions dominant in one site, while other reactions prefer the another, nearly equivalent site. This effect is even more evident for the simulations explicitly including Eley-Rideal steps. The kMC simulations reveal that CO is formed via the dissociative pathway of the reverse water-gas shift reaction, while methane is formed via a CO2 → CO → HCO → CH → CH2 → CH3 → CH4 mechanism. Overall, our results show the importance of including the Eley-Rideal reactions and point to small Ni clusters supported on the CeO2 (111) surface as potential good catalysts for high selective CO2 methanation under mild conditions, while very active and selective toward CO formation at higher temperatures.

Niobium Modification of CeO2 Tuning Electron Density of Nickel-Ceria Interfacial Sites for Enhanced CO2 Methanation

CO2 methanation has attracted considerable attention as a promising strategy for recycling CO2 and generating valuable methane. This study presents a niobium-doped CeO2-supported Ni catalyst (Ni/NbCe), which demonstrates remarkable performance in terms of CO2 conversion and CH4 selectivity, even when operating at a low temperature of 250 °C. Structural analysis reveals the incorporation of Nb species into the CeO2 lattice, resulting in the formation of a Nb-Ce-O solid solution. Compared with the Ni/CeO2 catalyst, this solid solution demonstrates an improved spatial distribution. To comprehend the impact of the Nb-Ce-O solid solution on refining the electronic properties of the Ni-Ce interfacial sites, facilitating H2 activation, and accelerating the hydrogenation of CO2* into HCOO*, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted. These investigations shed light on the mechanism through which the activity of CO2 methanation is enhanced, which differs from the commonly observed CO* pathway triggered by oxygen vacancies (OV). Consequently, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interplay between the electronic properties of the catalyst's active sites and the reaction pathway in CO2 methanation over Ni-based catalysts.
