Compatibilization of PE/PS and PE/PP blends. I. Effect of processing conditions and formulation

Estimation of the Shear Viscosity of Mixed-Polymer Materials for Screw Extrusion-Based Recycling Process Modeling

The scope of this work is the development of a method to estimate the temperature and shear rate-dependent viscosity of mixtures composed of two polymers. The viscosity curve of polymer mixtures is crucial for the modeling and optimization of extrusion-based recycling, which is the most efficient way to recycle polymeric materials. The modeling and simulation of screw extruders requires detailed knowledge of the properties of the processed material, such as the thermodynamic properties, the density, and the rheological behavior. These properties are widely known for pure materials; however, the incorporation of impurities, like other polymers in recycled materials, alters the properties. In this work, miscible, immiscible, and compatibilized immiscible polymer mixtures are considered. A new method based on shear stress is proposed and compared to the shear rate-based method. Several mixing rules are evaluated for their accuracy in predicting mixture viscosity. The developed methods allow the prediction of the viscosity of a compatibilized immiscible mixture with deviations below 5% and that of miscible polymer mixtures with deviations below 3.5%.

Identification of Plastics in Mixtures and Blends through Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

In this paper, the possibility of detecting polymers in plastic mixtures and extruded blends has been investigated. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (py-GC/MS) allows researchers to identify multicomponent mixtures and low amounts of polymers without high spatial resolution, background noise and constituents mix interfering, as with molecular spectrometry techniques normally used for this purpose, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In total, 15 solid mixtures of low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyamide (PA) and polycarbonate (PC) in various combinations have been qualitatively analyzed after choosing their characteristic pyrolysis products and each polymer has been detected in every mix; thus, in extruded blends of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), PP and PS had varying weight percentages of the individual constituents ranging from 10 up to 90. Moreover, quantitative analysis of these polymers has been achieved in every blend with a trend that can be considered linear with coefficients of determination higher than 0.9, even though the limits of quantification are lower with respect to the ones reported in the literature, probably due to the extrusion process.

Thermomechanical Properties of Virgin and Recycled Polypropylene-High-Density Polyethylene Blends

This paper provides evidence and discusses the variability in the thermomechanical behaviour of virgin and recycled polypropylene/high-density polyethylene blends without the addition of other components, which is sparse in the literature. Understanding the performance variability in recycled polymer blends is of critical importance in order to facilitate the re-entering of recycled materials to the consumer market and, thus, contribute towards a circular economy. This is an area that requires further research due to the inhomogeneity of recycled materials. Therefore, the thermal and mechanical properties of virgin and recycled polypropylene/high-density polyethylene blends were investigated systematically. Differential scanning calorimetry concludes that both the recycled and virgin blends are immiscible. Generally, recycled blends have lower overall crystallinity and melting temperatures compared with virgin blends while, remarkably, their crystallisation temperatures are compared favourably. Dynamical mechanical analysis showed little variation in the storage modulus of recycled and virgin blends. However, the alpha and beta relaxation temperatures are lower in recycled blends due to structural deterioration. Deterioration in the thermal and mechanical properties of recycled blends is thought to be caused by the presence of contaminants and structural degradation during reprocessing, resulting in shorter polymeric chains and the formation of imperfect crystallites. The tensile properties of recycled blends are also affected by the recycling process. The Young's modulus and yield strength of the recycled blends are inferior to those of virgin blends due to the deterioration during the recycling process. However, the elongation at break of the recycled blends is higher compared with the virgin blends, possibly due to the plasticity effect of the low-molecular-weight chain fragments.

Sugar-Based Polymers with Stereochemistry-Dependent Degradability and Mechanical Properties

Stereochemistry in polymers can be used as an effective tool to control the mechanical and physical properties of the resulting materials. Typically, though, in synthetic polymers, differences among polymer stereoisomers leads to incremental property variation, i.e., no changes to the baseline plastic or elastic behavior. Here we show that stereochemical differences in sugar-based monomers yield a family of nonsegmented, alternating polyurethanes that can be either strong amorphous thermoplastic elastomers with properties that exceed most cross-linked rubbers or robust, semicrystalline thermoplastics with properties comparable to commercial plastics. The stereochemical differences in the monomers direct distinct intra- and interchain supramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions in the bulk materials to define their behavior. The chemical similarity among these isohexide-based polymers enables both statistical copolymerization and blending, which each afford independent control over degradability and mechanical properties. The modular molecular design of the polymers provides an opportunity to create a family of materials with divergent properties that possess inherently built degradability and outstanding mechanical performance.

Investigation of Interfacial Diffusion in PA/PP-g-MAH Laminates Using Nanoscale Infrared Spectroscopy

The characterization of polymer-polymer interfaces is of great interest to understand the diffusion process and chemical interactions in polymeric multiphase systems. This study investigated the formation of the interface layer between polyamide (PA) and polypropylene (PP) and its dependency on the maleic anhydride (MAH) content in PP. New insights with a very high level of details on the formation of the interfacial layer are obtained by employing a special technique of atomic force microscopy (AFM) combined with infrared (IR) for chemical imaging at nanoscale spatial resolution. This enables the determination of the interface thickness and even the observation and visualization of the diffusion gradient across the PA/PP interface layer. Combined with classical investigation methods such as interfacial energy and rheology, the method of nano-IR spectroscopy represents a very powerful tool to obtain more insights and a deeper understanding of the interfacial phenomenon in multiphase polymeric systems.

Effect of SEBS and OBC on the Impact Strength of Recycled Polypropylene/Talc Composites

In this paper, we report a study on the use of a linear triblock copolymer based on styrene and ethylene/butylene (SEBS) and a polypropylene (PP)-based olefin block copolymer (OBC) for improving the impact strength of a recycled polypropylene (PP) from packaging waste. Talc was used as a reinforcing filler in order to prepare a material suitable for being used in the automotive sector. The composite mixtures were prepared by melt extrusion, and the samples were manufactured by injection molding. Impact strength was evaluated by Izod tests, and a morphological study of the produced fractures was performed. As a result, a composite with substantially improved impact properties was prepared, with a two-fold increase of the impact strength in the case of unnotched specimens, while only a limited positive effect was produced on notched specimens. Since talc-filled PP is a typical material used in the automotive sector, the obtained results demonstrate that post-consumer PP coming from the municipal waste collection of plastic packaging can be successfully used in car components with no compromise in terms of mechanical requirements.

A direct functionalization of polyolefins for blend compatibilization by an insertion of 1,1-bis(phenylsulfonyl)ethylene (BPSE)

A mild post-modification of polyethylene (PE) & polypropylene (PP) to insert phenylsulfonyl groups is reported, the modified samples demonstrated to act as blend compatibilizers.

The Effect of Different Compatibilizers on the Properties of a Post-Industrial PC/PET Blend

The substitution of virgin resins by recycled ones is a worldwide tendency that is supported by the fluctuation of oil prices and the transition to a circular economy. Polymeric blends have been intensively studied because of their ability to provide tailored properties for particular applications. However, in their design phases, the issue of end-life re-use had not been well addressed, and now difficulties in their recycling are arising. In this study, we investigated the effect of three different compatibilizers: two chain extenders (CEs), (1) a styrene-acrylic oligomer (ESAo), and (2) methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and an impact strength modifier, (3) an ethylene copolymer (EMAco), for the recycle of a post-industrial polycarbonate/polyethylene terephthalate (PC/PET) blend. The materials were prepared by reactive extrusion and characterized by intrinsic viscosity (IV) measurements, mechanical tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The introduction of each additive has been demonstrated to improve the compatibility between PET and PC in the post-industrial blend, leading to enhanced mechanical properties. The IV measurements increased to values that were comparable to the virgin material. In addition, CEs affected the crystallization of PET (as they reduced the degree of crystallinity), while EMAco acted as a nucleating agent. Morphological analysis enabled confirming the compatibilization effects induced by the tested additives.

Mechanical and chemical recycling of solid plastic waste

This review presents a comprehensive description of the current pathways for recycling of polymers, via both mechanical and chemical recycling. The principles of these recycling pathways are framed against current-day industrial reality, by discussing predominant industrial technologies, design strategies and recycling examples of specific waste streams. Starting with an overview on types of solid plastic waste (SPW) and their origins, the manuscript continues with a discussion on the different valorisation options for SPW. The section on mechanical recycling contains an overview of current sorting technologies, specific challenges for mechanical recycling such as thermo-mechanical or lifetime degradation and the immiscibility of polymer blends. It also includes some industrial examples such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling, and SPW from post-consumer packaging, end-of-life vehicles or electr(on)ic devices. A separate section is dedicated to the relationship between design and recycling, emphasizing the role of concepts such as Design from Recycling. The section on chemical recycling collects a state-of-the-art on techniques such as chemolysis, pyrolysis, fluid catalytic cracking, hydrogen techniques and gasification. Additionally, this review discusses the main challenges (and some potential remedies) to these recycling strategies and ground them in the relevant polymer science, thus providing an academic angle as well as an applied one.

Use of recycled plastics in wood plastic composites - a review

The use of recycled and waste thermoplastics has been recently considered for producing wood plastic composites (WPCs). They have great potential for WPCs manufacturing according to results of some limited researches. This paper presents a detailed review about some essential properties of waste and recycled plastics, important for WPCs production, and of research published on the effect of recycled plastics on the physical and mechanical properties of WPCs.
