Abstract
Herein, a nutrient water retention agent is prepared by fully mixing sludge with carboxymethyl cellulose-g-acrylic acid (CMC-g-AA) gel and nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) using polymer modifying curing technology. Experimental results show that when CMC:AA = 1:12 and CMC-g-AA gel content is 50%, sludge polymer has better water absorption and retention performance and the water retention time is extended for ∼14 days. At the same time, sludge polymer can preserve the characteristics of nutrient-rich elements and organic matter and promote plant growth. The addition of nZVI has a significant impact on reducing the risk of heavy metal toxic leaching in sludge. Moreover, analysis of variance and multiple comparisons shows that sludge polymer's particle size and water absorption times have significant effects on the water absorption and retention properties of sludge polymer. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance analyses show that the addition of an appropriate amount of gel could increase the number of hydrophilic groups and hydrophilic mineral components in sludge polymer, increase its overall porosity and improve its water absorption and retention properties.

Abstract
Chronic wound healing plagues thousands of diabetic patients and brings social and economic burdens. Plasma exosomes (P-Exos), regarded as nanosized therapeutic agents, have shown therapeutic efficacy in promoting diabetic wound healing. The present work prepared the P-Exos-loaded pH-responsive carboxymethylcellulose (P-Exos-loaded CMC) hydrogel to investigate its ability to accelerate diabetic wound healing and to explore its underlying mechanisms. The results showed that the P-Exos-loaded CMC hydrogel was an effective therapeutic agent for accelerating diabetic wound repair. It promoted the local wound healing process in diabetic type 1 mice and enhanced angiogenesis and re-epithelialization via activating angiogenesis-related pathways mediated by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).

Synthesis of photodegradable cassava starch-based double network hydrogel with high mechanical stability for effective removal of methylene blue. Int J Biol Macromol 2020; 168:875-886. Abstract
Synthetic hydrogel has been widely used in several applications, but poor mechanical stability and biodegradability limit their applications and raise environmental concerns. Here, a biodegradable hydrogel was developed via simple free-radical polymerization of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) in the presence of cassava starch (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol). The hydrogel showed exceptional mechanical and physical properties. The structural morphology changed at higher CS content from a dense fiber-like porous network to larger pores with thicker cell walls. Due to the formation of a double network structure via physical entanglement, the compressive modulus significantly increased from 27 kPa (CS 0 wt%) to 127 kPa (CS 50 wt%). Reducing synthetic content (PAA) to 25 wt% and increasing CS content to 50 wt% did not reduce the removal efficiency of the hydrogel toward methylene blue (MB). The maximum adsorption capacity of the CS50 hydrogel was 417.0 mg/g. Data fitting to theoretical models indicated monolayer adsorption of MB on a homogeneous surface via chemisorption. Removal efficiency was higher than 70% at the 5th cycle of adsorption-desorption. The biodegradability and photodegradability of the hydrogel were improved by grafting with CS. The developed hydrogel represents an alternative biodegradable adsorbent for a sustainable system of wastewater treatment.

Abstract
In this study, composite hydrogels with interpenetrated polymer networks (IPNs), based on bacterial cellulose (BC) and poly(acrylic acid-co-N,N′-methylene-bis-acrylamide) (PAA), were synthesized by radical polymerization and characterized herein for the first time. Liquid fertilizer (LF) formulations, containing potassium, phosphorus, ammonium oxides and micronutrients, were encapsulated directly into the IPNs of the composite hydrogels during synthesis. Thermal analyses and scanning electron microscopy of control and composite xerogels highlighted the formation of IPNs between BC and PAA. Swelling determinations confirmed the influence of the crosslinker and of the liquid fertilizer concentration upon the density of the IPNs. Further rheology studies and release profiles indicated how the presence of BC and the increase of the crosslinking density of IPNs improved the mechanical strength and the release profile of LF for the innovative composite BC-PAA hydrogels. Results regarding the fertilizer release indicated that the presence of the BC led to a more controlled liberation of the fertilizer proving that this new formulation is potentially viable for application in agricultural practices. In this study, composite hydrogels with interpenetrated polymer networks (IPNs), based on bacterial cellulose (BC) and poly(acrylic acid-co-N,N′-methylene-bis-acrylamide) (PAA) were synthesized by radical polymerization.![]()

Abstract
Ionogels offer great potential for diverse electric applications. However, it remains challenging to fabricate high-performance ionogels with both good mechanical strength and high conductivity. Here, a new kind of transparent ionogel with both good mechanical strength and high conductivity is designed via locking a kind of free ionic liquid (IL), i.e., 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([EMIm][DCA]), into charged poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS)-based double networks. On the one hand, the charged PAMPS double network provides good mechanical strength and excellent recovery property. On the other hand, the free [EMIm][DCA] locked in the charged double network through electrostatic interaction offers ionic conductivity as high as ≈1.7-2.4 S m-1 at 25 °C. It is demonstrated that the designed ionogel can be successfully used for a flexible skin sensor even under harsh conditions. Considering the rationally designed chemical structures of ILs and the diversity of charged polymer networks, it is envisioned that this strategy can be extended to a broad range of polymer systems. Moreover, functional components such as conducting polymers, 0D nanoparticles, 1D nanowires, and 2D nanosheets can be introduced into the polymer systems to fabricate diverse novel ionogels with unique functions. It is believed that this design principle will provide a new opportunity to construct next-generation multifunctional ionogels.

Abstract
Abstract
Superabsorbent hydrogels (PVP/CMC) based on polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/carboxylmethyl cellulose (CMC) of different copolymer compositions were prepared by gamma radiation. Factors affecting the gel content (%) and the swelling ratio (g/g) of hydrogel such as irradiation dose as well as copolymer composition were investigated. With increasing the CMC content in PVP/CMC hydrogels, increases the swelling and improves the water retention capability. The high swelling ratio was observed at copolymer composition of PVP/CMC (60/40). Fast swelling of the hydrogels was obtained after 20 min. The effect of different fertilizers and buffers of different pH’s on equilibrium swelling of hydrogels was investigated. Fertilizers such as urea, monopotassium-phosphate (MPK), and nitrogen-phosphate-potassium (NPK) were loaded onto the hydrogel to supply nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous nutrients. PVP/CMC hydrogels retained 28–36% after 72 h and slow retention was noticed up to 9 days. The swelling of hydrogel in fertilizer solutions is lower than that in water. The hydrogels showed adsorption desorption of fertilizers which governs by slow release property. The release rate of urea is much higher 10 times than that of phosphate. After 3 days, urea released 60%, while phosphate released 10–12%. The applicability of PVP/CMC hydrogels in the agricultural fields shows greater growth effect on zea maize plants. The growth of zea maize plant in soil mixed with PVP/CMC hydrogels loaded fertilizers is greater than untreated soil. The slow release fertilize, the high swelling and the slow water retention behaviors of PVP/CMC hydrogels encourage their use as safer release systems for fertilizers and as soil conditioner in agricultural applications.

Abstract
We used real-time fluorescence microscopy to investigate the migration of latex particles in drying battery slurries. The time evolution of the fluorescence signals revealed that the migration of the latex particles was suppressed above the entanglement concentration of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), while it was significantly enhanced when CMC fully covered the surfaces of the graphite particles. In particular, a two-step migration was observed when the graphite particles flocculated by depletion attraction at high CMC/graphite mass ratios. The transient states of the nonadsorbing CMC and graphite particles in a medium were discussed, and the uses of this novel measurement technique to monitor the complex drying processes of films were demonstrated.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the release behaviour of propranolol hydrochloride from psyllium matrices in the presence hydrophilic polymers. The dissolution test was carried out at pH 1.2 and pH 6.8. Binary mixtures of psyllium and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) used showed that an increase in the percentage of HPMC in the binary mixtures caused a significant decrease in the release rate of propranolol. Psyllium-alginate matrices produced lower drug release as compared to when the alginate was the matrix former alone. When sodium carboxy methyl cellulose (NaCMC) was incorporated into the psyllium, the results showed that matrices containing the ratio of psyllium-NaCMC in the 1:1 ratio are able to slow down the drug release significantly as compared to matrices made from only psyllium or NaCMC as retardant agent suggesting that there could be a synergistic effect between psyllium and NaCMC. The double-layered tablets showed that the psyllium and HPMC in the outer shell of an inner formulation of psyllium alone had the greatest effect of protecting the inner core and thus producing the lowest drug release (DE = 38%, MDT = 93 min). A significant decrease in the value of n in Q = kt(n) from 0.70 to 0.51 as the psyllium content was increased from 50 to 150 mg suggests that the presence of psyllium in HPMC matrices affected the release mechanism. Psyllium powder had the ability in the combination with other hydrophilic polymers to produce controlled release profiles. Care and consideration should as such be taken when formulating hydrophilic matrices in different combinations.

Abstract
pH responsive smart biomaterials of gelatin and poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-co-acrylic acid) were synthesized by redox polymerization and characterized by FTIR, Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM). The prepared environmental responsive biomaterials containing polyelectrolyte segments were assessed for their water sorption potential under varying experimental conditions. The diffusion mechanism of transport of water molecules arising due to solvent-polymer interaction was also analysed to predict the behaviour of continuously relaxing macromolecular chains. The in vitro blood compatibility of the prepared polymeric hydrophilic materials was evaluated by methods such as blood clot formation, platelet adhesion, percent haemolysis and protein-adsorption study on the surface of the prepared biomaterials.

Abstract
Semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyacrylic acid were prepared and its potential for controlled release of ciprofloxacine (Cfx) was assessed. The IPNs were characterized by IR spectral analysis and Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). The entrapped drug was examined for its antibacterial activity and chemical stability. The effects of experimental parameters such as varying chemical composition of the IPNs, percent loading of Cfx, pH and temperature of release medium and presence of salt ions in outer solution were examined on the release profile of the drug. On the basis of Fick's power law equations, the diffusion exponents (n) and diffusion constant (D) were evaluated for different IPNs compositions. From the kinetic parameter data, an attempt was made to resolve the mechanism of the release process of Cfx.

Abstract
In order to utilize the psyllium husk, a medicinally important natural polysaccharide, for developing the novel hydrogels for the controlled drug delivery device, we have prepared psyllium and N-hydroxymethylacrylamide based polymeric networks by using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (N,N'-MBAAm) as crosslinker. The polymeric networks thus formed were characterized with scanning electron micrography (SEM), FTIR and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques to study various structural aspects of the networks and also with the swelling response of the polymeric networks as a function of time, temperature, pH and [NaCl]. Equilibrium swelling has been observed to depend on both structural aspects of the polymers and environmental factors. Maximum P(s) 748.3 was observed at 13.0 x 10(-3)mol/L of [N,N'-MBAAm] in 0.5M NaOH solution. The release dynamics of model drugs (salicylic acid and tetracycline hydrochloride) from hydrogels has also been discussed, for the evaluation of the release mechanism and diffusion coefficients. The effect of pH on the release pattern of tetracycline has been studied by varying the pH of the release medium. In release medium of pH 7.4 buffer the release pattern of tetracycline drastically changes to the extent that mechanism of drug diffusion shifted from non-Fickian diffusion to Fickian diffusion. It has been observed that diffusion exponent "n" have 0.71, 0.67 and 0.52 values and gel characteristic constant 'k' have 1.552 x 10(-2), 2.291 x 10(-2) and 5.309 x 10(-2) values in distilled water, pH 2.2 buffer and pH 7.4 buffer, respectively, for tetracycline release. In solution of pH 7.4 buffer, the rate of polymer chain relaxation was more as compare to the rate of drug diffusion from these hydrogels and it follows Fick's law of diffusion. The value of the initial diffusion coefficient for the release of tetracycline hydrochloride was higher than the value of late time diffusion coefficient in each release medium indicating that in the start, the diffusion of drug from the polymeric matrix was fast as compare to the latter stages.
