Research Advances in Superabsorbent Polymers

Superabsorbent polymers are new functional polymeric materials that can absorb and retain liquids thousands of times their masses. This paper reviews the synthesis and modification methods of different superabsorbent polymers, summarizes the processing methods for different forms of superabsorbent polymers, and organizes the applications and research progress of superabsorbent polymers in industrial, agricultural, and biomedical industries. Synthetic polymers like polyacrylic acid, polyacrylamide, polyacrylonitrile, and polyvinyl alcohol exhibit superior water absorption properties compared to natural polymers such as cellulose, chitosan, and starch, but they also do not degrade easily. Consequently, it is often necessary to modify synthetic polymers or graft superabsorbent functional groups onto natural polymers, and then crosslink them to balance the properties of material. Compared to the widely used superabsorbent nanoparticles, research on superabsorbent fibers and gels is on the rise, and they are particularly notable in biomedical fields like drug delivery, wound dressing, and tissue engineering.

Hybrid Core-Shell Polymer Scaffold for Bone Tissue Regeneration

A great promise for tissue engineering is represented by scaffolds that host stem cells during proliferation and differentiation and simultaneously replace damaged tissue while maintaining the main vital functions. In this paper, a novel process was adopted to develop composite scaffolds with a core-shell structure for bone tissue regeneration, in which the core has the main function of temporary mechanical support, and the shell enhances biocompatibility and provides bioactive properties. An interconnected porous core was safely obtained, avoiding solvents or other chemical issues, by blending poly(lactic acid), poly(ε-caprolactone) and leachable superabsorbent polymer particles. After particle leaching in water, the core was grafted with a gelatin/chitosan hydrogel shell to create a cell-friendly bioactive environment within its pores. The physicochemical, morphological, and mechanical characterization of the hybrid structure and of its component materials was carried out by means of infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical testing under different loading conditions. These hybrid polymer devices were found to closely mimic both the morphology and the stiffness of bones. In addition, in vitro studies showed that the core-shell scaffolds are efficiently seeded by human mesenchymal stromal cells, which remain viable, proliferate, and are capable of differentiating towards the osteogenic phenotype if adequately stimulated.

Concentrated Hydrogel Electrolyte-Enabled Aqueous Rechargeable NiCo//Zn Battery Working from -20 to 50 °C

Zn-based aqueous rechargeable batteries are promising in portable electronics because of their high voltage, low cost, etc. However, most conventional aqueous electrolytes are liable to freeze at low temperature and are incompatible with high ion concentrations, which hinders their application. Herein, we developed a sodium polyacrylate hydrogel (PANa) to superabsorb highly concentrated ions. Unprecedentedly, the hydrogel electrolyte can be stretched over ten times at -50 °C without any freezing. Therefore, the fabricated rechargeable NiCo//Zn battery worked well in a wide-temperature-range (-20 to 50 °C). This work creates many opportunities for the development and practical application of aqueous batteries.
