A flexible pH sensor based on polyaniline@oily polyurethane/polypropylene spunbonded nonwoven fabric

To fabricate a two-electrode flexible pH sensor based on polypropylene spunbonded nonwoven fabric (PP SF), oily polyurethane (OPU) was first coated on the surface of PP SF to obtain OPU/PP SF. Then, silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) paste, used as the reference electrode and conductive carbon (C) paste were transferred to the OPU/PP SF surface through screen printing. Polyaniline (PANI) was deposited on the surface of the C paste to form a sensing working electrode via the electro-chemical deposition method. The results showed that the surface of the obtained PANI@OPU/PP SF flexible pH sensor (3D PANI pH sensor) presented a three-dimensional (3D) porous network structure. The 3D PANI pH sensor had good mechanical properties, an excellent Nernst response (-67.67 mV pH-1) and linearity (R2 = 0.99) in the pH range from 2.00 to 8.00 in the normal state. In the bent state, the 3D PANI pH sensor retained similar sensitivity (-68.87 mV pH-1) and linearity (R2 = 0.99). Moreover, the 3D PANI pH sensor exhibited a short response time (8 s), excellent reversibility (1.20 mV), low temperature drift (-0.0872 mV pH-1 °C-1) and long-term stability (0.83 mV h-1) in the normal state. Furthermore, the 3D PANI pH sensor can be effectively applied for pH monitoring of liquids and fruits with irregular curved surfaces. The error margin is no more than 0.16 compared to a commercial pH meter.

Preparation of Copper Ion Adsorbed Modified Montmorillonite/Cellulose Acetate Porous Composite Fiber Membrane by Centrifugal Spinning

The natural adsorption material montmorillonite (MMT) was selected, and cellulose acetate (CA) was used as the loading substrate to design and prepare a kind of green and environment-friendly recyclable porous composite fiber membrane with good heavy metal ion adsorption performance. Acetic acid modified montmorillonite (HCl-MMT), sodium dodecyl sulfonate modified montmorillonite (SDS-MMT), and chitosan modified montmorillonite (CTS-MMT) were prepared by inorganic modification and organic modification, and the porous MMT/CA composite fiber membrane was constructed by centrifugal spinning equipment. The morphological and structural changes of MMT before and after modification and their effects on porous composite fiber membranes were investigated. The morphology, structure, and adsorption properties of the composite fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic absorption spectrometry (ASS). The experimental results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Cu²⁺ on the prepared 5 wt% CTS-MMT composite fiber membrane was 60.272 mg/g after 10 h static adsorption. The adsorption of Cu²⁺ by a porous composite fiber membrane conforms to the quasi-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. The main factor of the Cu²⁺ adsorption rate is chemical adsorption, and the adsorption mechanism is mainly monolayer adsorption.

Biodegradable, biomimetic, and nanonet-engineered membranes enable high-flux and highly-efficient oil/water separation

Porous membranes with fascinating super-wettable surface and tunable porous architecture for oil-water separation have been developed rapidly, however, the serious secondary marine pollution caused by the non-degradable defectiveness of membranes themselves is still a thorny problem. Herein, we create an eco-friendly membrane with biomimetic cobweb-like nanostructure via assembling two-dimensional bacterial cellulose nanonets on the starch nanofibrous membrane on a large scale. The obtained novel composite membranes exhibit integrated properties of sub-micron pore size, ultrahigh porosity, superhydrophilicity, and underwater superoleophobicity, stemming from the synergistic effect of the hydrated nanonet-skin-layer and porous starch matrix. By virtue of the narrow-distributed sub-micron pores, ultrahigh porosity, and ultrathin thickness, the resulting membrane shows outstanding performance of excellent separation efficiency (up to 99.996%), high percolation flux (maximum of 15968 L m^-2 h^-1), well surpassing the conventional microfiltration membranes. More significantly, with the advantage of biodegradability and anti-oil-fouling property, the membrane could serve as the robust platform for long-term wastewater remediation.

Cross-Linking of Centrifugally Spun Starch/Polyvinyl Alcohol (ST/PVA) Composite Ultrafine Fibers and Antibacterial Activity Loaded with Ag Nanoparticles

In this research, centrifugally spun ultrafine composite starch/polyvinyl alcohol (ST/PVA) fibers with high water stability were prepared by cross-linking with a mixture of glutaraldehyde and formic acid in the form of vapor phase. The effect of cross-linking temperature combined with time on the water stability, crystal structure, and thermal properties of fibers was investigated to obtain the optimum parameters. On this basis, we further prepared Ag-loaded ST/PVA fibers with different contents of nano silver. The structure and properties of Ag-loaded fibers, which cross-linked under the optimum parameters, were analyzed. As a result, the Ag-loaded fibers exhibited excellent water stability and mechanical properties and possessed inhibition zone diameters of 3 and 2 mm to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus. aureus, respectively. The antibacterial property of the Ag-loaded ST/PVA fibers provided a new route for developing less costly antibacterial fiber materials in the future.
